+ 1 Staph Infection
I was asked earlier tonight by someone, if I thought they had a staph infection.
It got me thinking about people in my gym, and how everyone is handling the equipment then rubbing their face/eyes. Even using the bathroom without washing hands before or after. Now in my gym we strive for it to be a clean environment, but hey it's still a gym and gets dirty.
What Is a Staph Infection?
A Staph infection is an infection caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. It is commonly found on the skin or the nose. If the bacteria gets deep enough into the skin it can prove fatal. As it seems most cases are mild one should still be aware of the risks that Staph Infection presents.
I also bring this to light because among the list of "more at risk" types of people, they list "injecting drug users." Weather you want to admit using aas makes you a drug user or not, your injection site is a potential risk if you aren't careful. The most common disease cause by Staph Infection is Skin Disease. But not limited to:
Progression to impetigo (a crusting of the skin)
Cellulitis (inflammation of the deeper layers of skin and connective tissue under the skin, leading to swelling and redness of the area)
Scalded skin syndrome (very serious, also very rare)
If the infection moves into the bloodstream and moves to other organs (known as bacteremia or sepsis) it can cause even greater problems. Ie:
Staphylococcal pneumonia ( It mainly affects people with underlying lung disease and can lead to abscess formation within the lungs.)
Endocarditis (heart valve infection)
Osteomyelitis (severe inflammation of your bones)
Among other things!
Note: Direct contact with Staph Infected area is contagious until infection is resolved.
I am doing this on my phone so I will stop for now and update later. Just wanted to get it started while fresh on my mind.

thanks for adding to my paranoia :-/
Sorry bro, just seemed like an interesting topic. Just remember the basic rules of hygiene and you should be all good. Lol
Kinda funny you posted this my wifes an RN an we were just talking about this ... She jumped my ass about using a pin twice not a good idea ... Good post
That's too funny
Nice points you've made! Most folks don't know its naturally in the nose. It's usually though of as a hospital problem. Microbes are everywhere so gotta strive to keep it clean.
Thank you for the reminder. It is good edict to wipe down the equipment after use but it is a rule that is rarely enforced. When I see someone do this I ask them if they noticed if the last guy wiped it down before them. Point being we are responsible for are own well being. You wouldn't trust a stranger with your money so don't trust them with your health. Wipe down the equipment before you use it! Be very self conscious about what your hands touch and if you have a cut on them seal it with super glue. Staph is very antibiotic resistant so if you think you may have contacted it you must take immediate action. Cut a fresh clove of garlic and rub it into the infected cut. At this time it is tho only way to effectively kill the infection. Hospitals are the #1 place to come in contact with staph while gyms come in a close second.
