+ 3 Stage with an injury
2015 has been a challenging year medically for me. Started off really well, my shoulder recovered superbly from the third surgery in July and I was training as well as I ever have. At the point I went on holiday at the end of March, I was in the best condition I've ever been in. Whilst in NZ I realised just how well I'd responded to the previous 4 or 5 months, I knew 2015 was going to be a good year when competition time came around.
Sight hiccup, cancer, chemotherapy, weight loss, major headaches. Got the all clear, back on the mend. August show was out, but late October show still had potential. In my head I'm still in the game, albeit just about.
Four weeks ago, my shoulder gives me a sharp pain, seized up for a few days, clearly gone wrong. End result, I'm back on the surgery table early next month with another cuff tear. Could be done sooner, but I've decided I'm doing the October show and I've got some work outages making life one handed a little difficult. Probably slightly foolish as I won't be at my peak, BUT I need to do it. Certain poses will be challenging due to pain and range of motion, but I'll cope. I won't win, but I can make the best of what I've got right now before my arm end up back in a sling for 3 months.
I know some will say don't show unless you're at your best and I largely agree with that. In my current situation, I'm going against my better judgement and probably only at 70-80% at best. My expectations are realistic, just to be the best that 2015 has allowed me to be.
My coach thinks I'm nuts. Am I? Anyone been on stage with an injury? Any advice?

I've been here for a long time!! You've always been one of the guys I looked up to and took advice from! Even before you changed your name.. So here is my advice.. Your a bodybuilder. That's what makes you happy. That is what completes you. That's what you live for.. Do the show and be the best Catalyst you can be!! Regardless of placings you are a champ brother!!
First off sorry to here about your injury..you've had a hell of year bro...that being said i say go for it your a wiley vet i bet at 70 80 percent you can still kick some major ass...with all you've been through i think it would be a good challenge for you something to hang your hat on and forget about all that other shit you've been through
Bro you are one of the most smartest dudes on this forum and very helpful to many of us. I just want to wish you well and the best of luck and I hope all works out for you brother.
Other than that Idk what to say....... lol.......
Thanks mate, appreciate it.
I've had a few pm's above it this from guys and girls I respect and learn from. There's a repeating theme going on that's telling me to sit it out and I think they're right. I've got some major thinking to do, but I think I should probably pull the plug as I'm nowhere near my best.
You're on the stage. Look left. Look right. How many of these guys have kicked cancers ass in the last 4 months. That's right none of them. A "normal" person would still be accepting beating this horrible disease and enjoying themselves. Living their lives. And here you are enjoying yourself and living your life. Good luck you got this
I've always had the greatest admiration and respect for you brother Catalyst! You never let life's travails become a hindrance! You're always pushing through obstacles and moving forward! A great man with an indomitable spirit indeed!
You might have heard of a legendary bodybuilder from your neck of the woods who won the Olympia weeks after a bicep tear, the great Dorian Yates! :))
Do it for you because it's what you love and it will heal you in every way possible!
I'm quite certain, with your champion attitude, you'll do fantastic!
Much respect always my friend!
I remember that very well, inspiring the way Dirian recovered from that injury.
Thanks T, appreciate your kind words.
I think it's fine and it sounds like it's important to you, so I say go for it.
As for the shoulder pain, if possible, try and get a cortisone shot. Many athletes play with similar injuries and do so with the aid of a localized cortisone shot. Just a thought.
Best of luck to you!
RustyhookerDorian and others went to stage with torn muscles. I'd bet if you're razor sharp you may suprise yourself
Only u know ur limits...shoot for the stars....and take whats yours...God put u on this planet for a reason....no regrets...make it happen...prayin for ya to exceed in ur endeavors...
Brother, you'll obviously get the typical, "listen to your body" type of responses, but what kind of advice would you give someone in your shoes? It's like anything. You're a grown up. You're gonna make your own decisions, whether they be self destructive or not.
That being said, I say you know your body and brain better than anyone else does. Personally, I say go like hell and kick so much fucking ass that the peeps at the show don't know what hit 'em.
Personally, you've been incredible part of my education, with your patience and your candid comments. I wish you all the best, and I intend to pay forward your time, patience and kindness by helping others who are in my shoes (as newbies) in the years that follow.
You know better than any of us if you are capable. I wish you the best
What's your condition at the moment Cat?
Your nuts but I respect your decision. If you can salvage your year and go into next without the "I should have" then you accomplished enough to keep plowing through.
Not perfect, but It's good enough, stage condition achievable in that timescale with strict diet and training. I've been better at this stage, but I've also been worse. Bit of water to shift, but I'm not concerned.
I think your doing exactly what you should be doing bro.. we all have pushed through injuries and setbacks but I think and feel this show is important to you so give it all you have and leave nothing.. +2 MUCH RESPECT
I'm tired of making excuses mate, there will always be "something". Even if I come last Ias long as I show my best with what I have right now I'm happy.
Great attitude Cat!! Even with a shoulder injury I believe you will place a lot higher than you think..
excuses are like assholes .. everybody has one...
