+ 2 Sons first cycle advice!!

ad

I’m just fucking with y’all lmao.

Ok here’s the deal. My 17yr old has been pretty consistent with working out. He currently sits at 130lbs at 5’5. He is shredded as fuck and veiny as fuck. Clearly visible 6 pack, shoulders, chest, bis, tris all clearly separated. Also has big calves. Little fucker even has that fuck boy V going to the shlong lol. Not that I know how to pose but I have him doing poses to help develop mind muscle connection. Bench 185lbs for 5 deadlift 225 for a double. 205 for deadlift for a single. How ever he has a really really hard time eating to gain. His appetite is practically non existent. He’s been expressing interest in gaining weight. His goal is 180lbs. He likes his meals prepped and eats the same things constantly. Kid even drinks electrolytes lights. He started talking to me about whey protein and mass gainers as well as creatine and bcaas. I’ve expressed to him multiple times that food is king but he wants to try a mass gainer, creatine and bcaas. Are there any studies on teens using these things. I might be over thinking it but I just don’t know.

For reference he eats 73 grams of protein 90g of carbs and usually 3 eggs a day. He eats broccoli for greens but probably not enough of that. He takes lunch to school usually chicken broccoli and a bit of rice

He’s not to into powerlifting so I’ve referred him to push pull legs videos.

What do y’all think about this kid using mass gainer, creatine and bcaas?

Petecastiglione's picture

Creatine 5-10g everyday. Mass gainers are a waste of money (as someone who has sold supplements their entire life). Wayyyyy better off just getting a protein powder and adding oats and pb, even using liquid egg whites would be a great move. Two scoops of protein mixed with a carton of liquid egg whites (doesn’t have much taste at all) is 100g of protein right there. Again, add in pb, oats, any fruit, and he’s golden

So you’ve been selling people dreams! Telling them that all the greats take this product and if they wanna look like them this is the thing they are missing! Shame on you!! Lmao jokes aside, I’m not really for this approach but at this point I’m just tryna get him rolling in the right direction in hopes that everything else falls into place. Appreciate the recommendations!

He taps out at 3 meals a day. I let him know it’s not enough. Gonna try some of the homemade recommendations members have mentioned and cut his meals a bit to add more meals per day. Then baby increases.

does he smoke weed? lol that'll keep him eating. i gained a good amount by adding in a cbd pen, there's really no high, but still get the munchies, I'm not recommending starting him using that kind of stuff but if he's already smoking with his friends on the weekend then i don't see much harm in adding in a cbd pen with no psychoactive effect. if he doesn't do that kind of stuff already than don't ever let him lol. or cbd gummies or some form other than vaping would be best.

No he doesn't. I’ve always told him to wait til mid 20s before he tries. Of course he’s a teen but I’m confident he doesn’t he’s a homebody so I’d be really hard to hid. I smoked every day for 15+ years he wouldn’t be able to get it passed me.

You can use all of that but those things are much better used in conjunction with complete meals. If he is simply looking to gain he should be adding in more whole food. I would go up to 130g of protein because 1g per pound of body weight has shown to be optimal for muscle growth in natural lifters. As far as carbs I would use 3g per lb so make it 400g for an even number. Protein builds muscle but carbs are the driver or growth. Definitely just a baseline to start at but he definitely needs more food.

I tried having him up everything but he said it was too much. I laided out what he should consume ina day. Originally I told him 130g protein and 200g carbs.I’ll have him make really small increases and maybe if he says the weight go up it’ll get him a bit more motivated to eat.

If he is anything like I was at that age there was not enough food or supplements on the planet for me to gain weight I didn't break 155 pounds until I was 30

Sithx66's picture

Shit man I look at food and start gaining weight. I’ve always been jealous of people with a fast metabolism. Yea I can get big quick but if diet is poor that fat comes on even quicker. And to lose weight is a fuckin bitch

His macros are the main reason he’s not gaining any size. He’s under eating quite a bit! 130lbs he should be getting 1-1.5g protein per lb of body weight 1.7-2.0g carbs, and .35-.5g fats. Somthing like this, 165g protein 250 carbs 45 fats, protein shakes will def be easy to get in the extra cals. 1-2 scoops protein, 20g honey, whole banana, 15ml quality olive oil throw it in a blender twice a day on top of his other current meals…. problem Solved. Creatine and whey are two of the most studied and safe products any one can take just make sure he drinks water with creatine it can dry you out and raise your creatinine levels of not drinking enough water. Stay away from peptides sarms and any of that other stupid stuff. He’s 17 his body is naturally roaring with hormones right now don’t any anything besides food.

I agree 100%. I’ve told him plenty of times food is king. I let him know that 180lbs BW is a long term goal and is gonna require a shit load of food and consistency. I let him know that if he’s lucky I’ll gain 10lbs of mass gainer but long term food is the answer. Def won’t be pushing for peptides or sarms

In a promo × 1
Flipiv's picture

To add to that the mass gainer is all fine but it’s expensive when you can blend oats to a powder and just add them to a whey. Same thing mass gainer is except they are using a carb powder probably maltodextrin.

The bcaa and creatine will help but they won’t make him gain any weight if he’s not eating enough food for them to do their jobs. Same thing with actual steroids you can take a 1000mg test but if you only eating 100g protein and 90g carbs a day you can’t expect to ever get jacked. The fuel has to be there supply the growth in the tissue

Yea there are so many
Options for the Younger guys out there, seeing as how their bodies with a little bit of help can naturally produce enough testosterone unless they have some sort of medically have somedeficiency in that area.

Creatine
Test boosters
They’re also some peptides that he could probably check out that one mess with that won’t harm his natural testosterone production afterwards

Sithx66's picture

Naw can’t have him fucking with peptides, sarms, or test boosters. I’m confident his test is high. The answer is food. Just gotta try some new things

I was in the same boat as him all throught school and a few years after high school. I tried everything, I just had an extremely fast metabolism and stayed at 130-135lbs. My weight gain just came with age I suppose and all the beer I used to consume lol

Lmao fuckin beer. I imagine over time all that shit slows down and it becomes easier to gain weight. Hey just might be the case for him.

I was also 135lbs max in Secondary school and even when older around 25 I was 140lbs and that was with training Lol Extremely thin framed and fast metabolism. I actually think I had an overactive thyroid too because I was constantly amped and could get adrenaline rushes over anything - I also think running steroids has changed that and slowed it way down to normal because thats when I began putting weight on easily and being so much more relaxed in general. Shame I never got tested for it when I was younger but I was scared stiff of needles Lol Still makes me cringe when they go in a vein and draw blood out, to me its just wrong!! Yuck

jshort's picture

Agreed, I've always had a thin frame. But honestly, after my first test cycle, I gained more confidence. Thus, giving me the motivation to push myself and help breakthrough the plateau. Sure, there are supplements and diets to help at younger ages. But I believe it is purely up to genetics, until you get older....then there is always a good diet with some good gear sprinkled in.

Honestly creatine is one of the most safest and most well studied supplements out there. My suggestion like many others are continuing with protein shakes and aminos. To help the bulking you can include casein before bed since it’s slow digesting

Sithx66's picture

Sounds like a good approach! We will see how his stomach handles it

UncleYoked's picture

man, I didn't read the first sentence and zeroed in on the 17yr old and almost lost it.
I don't see any problem with creatine, go lower than it states, that loading phase is over done imo and it'll fuck your stomach up, protein shakes are fine. My bulking little trick is right before bed I have a shake or water with PB, I have a jar of PB next to my bed to make it easy and I scoop it and swallow it like an oyster. Add a little honey to help with sleep.

Lmao! I knew that shit would work. Great info all around. Got some shopping to do!

Bro these school ain’t poor they got microwave’s Lmao I offered to get him the self heating lunch boxes and he said it’s to much. I can’t even convince this kid to try ketchup. I’d comfortable bet money that he says no to the rice cakes. I’d bet he wouldn’t even try one. Will report back on this soon.

My son’s 16 and in a really similar spot. He’s been consistent with training, enjoying it, and slowly getting into the whole process just like your kid. We’re keeping things pretty clean on the supplement side, but a few basics have been helping him a lot—thought I’d share what’s been working for us.

Whey protein’s been super useful, especially on days where appetite isn’t great. It helps hit protein numbers without stuffing himself. Creatine monohydrate is a no-brainer—5g a day, totally safe, and definitely helping him push more in the gym. I’ve also had him on HMB and glutamine just to help with recovery since he’s training hard and staying active outside the gym too. Fish oil and a decent multivitamin round it out, and we throw in some zinc a few times a week for appetite and general support.

I’d honestly skip BCAAs. He was interested in them at first too, but I just had him switch to EAAs around training. Way more useful and actually supports recovery and growth, especially when he’s not eating a ton.

Appetite’s still hit or miss sometimes, so we keep a blender handy—he makes his own shakes with oats, whey, peanut butter, banana, olive oil if needed. Way better than any of the store-bought gainers.

Now, just to throw this out there—MK-677 comes up a lot when appetite’s low. I know some people have used it successfully in younger guys to boost hunger and support GH levels. But personally, I don’t feel confident enough to go that route with my own son.

Why? Because at 17, his natural GH and IGF-1 levels are already sky-high. Messing with that balance too early—especially with something like MK-677—could risk disrupting natural hormone rhythms, sleep patterns, or even bone development depending on how he reacts. It’s not guaranteed, but the long-term data in teens just isn’t there.

Maybe it’s a bit of a taboo, maybe not—I’ll leave that open for discussion. I’m sure some have had positive experiences, but I’d rather let his body do its thing naturally for now and keep supporting it the clean way. Curious what others think

Looks like home made shakes is gonna be the way to go. Time to get a blender!

I can’t be having a sarm goblin for a son. I’d have to disown him!! Real men slam test and tren! Lmao all jokes aside I simply can’t do that. I’d feel like I’m putting him on a fast track to PED use. Maybe I’m already doing that bc I do them but that would feel like encouraging him to do it. Shit one day I might get that you’re a hypocrite dad!! Lmao

Bloody Hell mate - I thought you were gonna say you were going to give him some gear there!! Lmao

Isolate 90 Protein shakes, Creatine HCL and BCAA's - No problem at all buddy, I was taking the shakes and creatine at that age too when I first got into lifting all those years back. I have always had a shit appetite - still do relative to other people! Get him on EAA's rather than BCAA's as they contain all the essential amino acids and not just the big 3, you need the smaller ones in there too like histidine and methionine for everything to work optimally when building muscle. When you drink a serving of EAA's its effectively like drinking a much smaller, slimmmed down version of a protein shake that isn't filling as such but still works extremely well - I have 2 servings of them everyday. Get him some Creatine HCL rather than the monohydrate version, works waaayyy better mate. I would just get him some Whey Isolate 90% plus and a bag of Dextrose powder - you can make much better shakes that will put more weight on him and he will digest it faster and easier - meaning he will be able to eat food quicker and not be as full from the cheap mass gainers that contains shitty concentrate and mixtures of whey.

I hope for that price creatine hcl works way better

press1's picture

Bud seriously - it isn't that much more from the place I buy it from. 500g of Monohydrate is £17, 500g of HCL is £20. Go with the manufacturers who sell it in bags and not these RIP off merchants that sell it in plastic tubs and flavour it - then yeah they are expensive! Also don't just buy it as part of a Pre workout formula that you only take on training days - you need to be taking it everyday to build stores of it, so that when it is lifting day BOOOOOOOM You are Superman!!

Saint gannett's picture

I use 1g protein to maintain 1lb of body weight when active and aim for 2g protein per 1lb of target weight. Minimum 1.5g protein/lb target weight. Would be 3x basic protein shake daily to get your boy up there. I have learned of no diet in the world that will provide aminos to process that protein with lean mass as a result. Watch old Lee Priest diets where he ballooned to 240lb pre-contest and well under 200lb contest…. I think he rides 240 normally after 4 decades, but there was a day. So, yes, a lean diet will need branch chain amino acids… is basically cheap in a diet.

@Makwa posts tons in diet and it works both natti and supra physiological. Sounds like your son is in his prime, means he is riding natti what costs me a hundred a month to be at, but then I am hitting 60.

If he is happy what he is eating, leave well enough alone, just get his protein around 150g (minimum) without raising his fats/carbs and shakes are great for that. Weight gainers are a lot of sugar, and usually load up carbs. Many people will up the fat and keep carbs low, that lets you add fatty meats, but cholesterol is an issue. If you just must raise his carbs, go potato’s and pastas, nice bolognese sauce on top with cheeses adds massive weight gainers are potential if you go the carbs route.

At the end of the day, it sounds like your son is have a great kid with tons of potential. Encourage him to be happy as he is, you described Adonis so see that he catches that in reflection. Help him to gain weight 1lb at a time and thank heaven that he is looking at food with work to grow.

Only real advice in all that ramble is probably avoid mass gainers. May as well pour sugar into a protein shake for that. Potato’s and pasta will put better carbs via processed starch and the make a great platform for toppings that also bulk.

Appreciate the response and info. Of course @Makwa always posting gold on here! I’m gonna start working on his diet plan then get his feed back. See what we can change what he’s down for and hold that steady and see what direction we go in.

I constantly remind him that he is genetically gifted in that way. Everyone in the family says it. Every summer he walks around shirtless and everyone is always like wtf lol. I truly believe where he feels self conscious is his height. I feel like he might be tryna compensate by gaining mass. He has constantly mentions his height and makes comments like why couldn’t I be taller. Why did I stop growing, if I was taller I’d have a better chance in sports. Ect ect. I believe you’re right I have to start addressing those comments and make sure he is able to be happy with his height bc nothing is going to change that.

Does he like milk? Chocolate milk? Shoot, get a container of egg whites and mix them with chocolate milk and you’ve got a killer protein shake without a bunch of fillers/oils. And it’s tasty. Have him eat a high protein meal and drink the egg/milk concoction. Add a carb and blend if needed.

This is random, but if he likes chocolate pudding, you can blend scrambled eggs, honey, some milk, and cocoa powder for a high protein snack. Blend it til you get a pudding like consistency and enjoy. That’s easily +20g of protein if you use +3 large eggs.

Does he add any sauces to his food? I can eat a lot more food if I add ketchup or some sort of hot sauce. Gotta make it hyper palatable.

I can’t imagine creatine would hurt, just watch out for bubble gut. Edit to add: BCAAs are pointless if he’s getting protein in. You can make mass gainers at home with quality foods.

Damn doesn’t like milk?!? I can’t even guess how many gallons I’ve drank over my years. Local raw milk from a farm IS THE BEST! I get 1 or 2 gallons a week and they taste better, hydrate you better, and are better for you. People are scared of the shit, but it’s just better and you probably won’t believe it until you try it.

I drank normal pasteurized big store bought brands up until my adulthood. I think mid 20’s I first tried raw as I found a local supplier when looking for buying whole cows for meat (Lots of farms let you buy a cow or 1/2 cow before slaughter and then they will process for you whenever ready). Super convenient to just have virtually endless meat and that $1,500-$5,000 seems like a big chunk, but you really end up saving so much money compared to buying every day.

My last orders breakdown was:
18lbs Brisket
24lbs Boneless Chuck Roast
10lbs Eye of Round
7lbs Filet
2lbs Flank
2lbs Flat Iron
220lbs Ground Beef
10lbs London Broil
16lbs NY Strip
5lbs Picanha
17lbs Boneless Ribeye
24lbs Rump Roast
18lbs Short Ribs
8lbs Sirloin Baseball
2lbs Outside Skirt
24lbs Stew Meat
10lbs Tri-Tip Roast
4lbs Inside Skirt

Paid just under 4k for 450lbs of grass-fed, no antibiotic, no mRNA vaccines, and no hormone added mixed cow meats delivered to my door fully processed and ready to throw in freezer.

Normally I buy a quarter or rarely a half cow because I don’t love to keep freezer meats for over a year. This time I had a couple family members pitch in and we split it across 3 households. Taste & quality diminishes and dehydration/freezer burn begins to set in.

Easily fits in a 20 Cu Ft. freezer.

Lolol sorry went way off topic on a little tangent there, but it’s truly something I highly recommend if you like saving money longer term and know you’ll eat it! Anything meat I will devour haha… no homo
