+ 3 Pushing injuries too hard

ad

For those of you that remember, last year I had a rotator cuff repair on my shoulder (August) after destroying the subscapularis and tearing off the front delt attatchment. Appeared to recover well, still had quite a lot of discomfort, but have been back to pushing reasonable weight for some time now. Haven't gone crazy, rarely bench above about 180Kg's and some exercises just cause me major problems (i.e. wide grip chin ups / pull downs). All in I'd say I'd made an 70-80% recovery, which considering the mess I'd made of my shoulder, that appeared to be a pretty good result.

That was until about 10 days ago. Incline bench, light weight, (100kg's), purely pushing for reps and getting blood into the muscle. Around rep 15-20, sharp pain, racked it, didn't feel right. Couple of hours later, pain radiating down my bicep into the top of the forearm. MRI scan Monday, call from surgeon half an hour ago to tell me it's torn again and I need surgery. Booked in for two weeks on Friday :( I am SO BORED of medical sagas it's untrue......

I'm due on stage October. I'll be in a sling for 4-6 weeks, so I'm still keeping the show on the table and intending to hit it. I'll lose some size but I feel I'm in good enough shape to rescue the situation if my diet remains on point. If not, so be it, that's life, I'll come back better next year.

Have I pushed too hard - Probably. I'm a stubborn guy with stuff like this. Goes to show you when you've got an injury it doesn't necessarily just cause problems when the weight is heavy. High reps cause me more problems than weight, I seem to have lost a lot of muscular endurance in my shoulder since surgery. Strength is near what it was before, but I cannot push high reps irrespective of weight.

For those with aches and pains - Go easy and don't be like me.

Back to training my calves constantly!!!!!

I have the same problem, get an injury and try to work through it. I have shoulder problems too, my right shoulder continues to get injured and im to dumb to let it heal. well i let it heal by going light but staying in the gym.

I stopped going heavy on bench like a year and half ago, once in a while ill toss on 365 but mainly stay at 315. inclines are the same I wont go above 275. most of my shoulder work is done in machines cause im scared of the free weights, side laterals hurt like a bastard so I only use cables. actually i have started using cables a lot more these days for as much as i can.

im a dumb fucker too. I know I need to chilax and then some fine skirts go by and its time to get serious!LOL

See I'm very good at telling other people to be sensible etc, then completely ignore my own advice. Always been the same since childhood.

Let it heal brother. We need you around the gyms of the world for many years to come.

Sorry to hear it bro! I'm certainly no stranger to injuries. When the body is talking to us we really need to listen. Sometimes I think it's just a pain I can and should push through. Just figure it's a sign of getting older but really these are the ones I really need to pay attention to. Hope you have a speedy recovery and I'm really interested in how the tb500 works out for you. I've read a little about it. Does it promote permanent repairs or does it just mask until you quit using it?

Catalyst's picture

Thanks mate. Mostly hypothetical research at this stage, but appears to assist with permanent tissue repair.

This saddened me to read this brother! It would appear you never get a break!
Vike nailed it "Many shows, only one shoulder".
Wishing you nothing but the best always! Wishing you a rapid recovery! Healing thoughts sent your way!
+1 for your resilience, determination and positive attitude amidst life's trials and tribulations! Whatever you require of me, please let me know!
I believe, regardless of the situation, your conditioning and strong work ethic will win the day! :))

Cheers Theo. such is life! You know I'm not one for "licking my wounds" so onwards and upwards!

I am sorry to hear this news. I wish you the very best and a speedy recovery.
I shattered my knee a couple of year ago. It's taken a long time to get back. I learned from previous injuries to be patient and not push myself past what's reasonable. I'm glad to say that even though I'll never be 100% again, I can still do most things. I'm grateful for my previous missteps and others reminding me to be patient and take it slow. It's paid off, even though it's been very frustrating at time.
Thanks for posting this and reminding all of us to listen to our bodies and to be patient with our injuries.

Thanks mate. I'll be fine. Not looking forward to being in the sling again, (I actually burnt the last one when it came off!), but I'll be fine.

I ran hgh and tb500 for recovery last year. Still running low dose hgh which I'll increase slightly and re introduce the tb500 just before surgery. I've got an old university mate that gets me freebie tb500 as he works in R&D in Singapore which is handy.

I've have been having a little nagging pain in my rear delt the last week or so. I've had issues with it on and off for about 10 years, so I recognise the symptoms early. I'd planned not to go today but it's like a huge magnet is attached to me and the gym, I always just go. The last time it went on me I was stuck for a few months as to the exercises I could do, but as it's obviously no were near as bad your injury I could train round it. I really should take a little time off though, if it got worse I'd be devastated if it kept me outta the gym.

I've gotta say your taking it well, this would of been a rant post if I was in your shoes. It's good to see your still planning on doing the comp, I think that shows some real character! And I wish you a speedy recovery, considering some of the shit you've been through recently your due a bit of good luck bro.

I'm pissed off, but got to keep positive, plenty of folks worse off than me. I had a near fatal bike accident 10 years ago, puts this sort if stuff in perspective. I'm lucky I can walk, let alone lift and get on a stage.

I've pushed too hard this year, I have to admit that. At my age I need to keep conscious of that and adjust accordingly.

Bro,

Really sorry to hear about the shoulder. Wishing you the absolute best bro and don't let the show be a source of mental anguish on top of it all as hard as that may be.

Very best,

GearHead

Thanks mate. What will be will be. If I can compete I will, but only if I can be nearly my best, not 50% to make up numbers. Always another show.

Age has forced an adjustment in overall goals for me S. I've changed my diet to full vegan and this has changed the way I look and train. Blood pressure went from high to normal with the diet change in only a couple of weeks and I feel better. Gone is the bulky powerful look that I like, and strength is down as well. Have to leave the ego in the locker room but that's a small price to pay. My wife likes the new look and stopped nagging about the injury possibilities with the "big" weight. Protein and calorie intake is way down and even the gear I use has changed. Tren/mast/test this cycle has me leaning out nicely. 56 years old in Nov. and I wish I could stop father time, but the change is necessary for me to stay healthy and injury free! Good luck in your rehab and kick in your show for us "old" guys!

Stay strong. Hopefully you find a happy medium. Tell em to throw and extra couple of bolts in the shoulder this time, lol

Catalyst's picture

Tape mate, they clearly forgot to use gaffer tape last time. Gaffer tape solves all DIY and orthopaedic issues lol.

irongame427's picture

Damn bro I'm sorry to hear you got hurt again. I have chronic shoulder problems to and it sucks. Spend all of November-January training calves every other day..... And they still look like shit lol.

Since then I completely changed up my training for chest, never ever going below 8 reps, much lighter weight with really really slow controlled motion. And honestly my chest has filled in better then it ever did when i was throwing around heavier weights. But your so right, you don't have to be lifting heavy to get hurt. Even tho I lift much lighter now I still have pain every time I do chest and shoulders. Sucks man. I wish you a speedy recovery bro.

Catalyst's picture

Thanks mate - I think to be honest shoulders are one of those things that once they're damaged they never truly recover as they're used so much.

Look on the bright side, I'll get out of mowing the lawn all summer ;)

irongame427's picture

lol thats the spirit. And ya man you're right, its just such a delicate joint that once you throw it off its never the same. I hate that I'm only 25 and having these problems, and I've been dealing with them since I was 22. I think its my fault to. When i first started lifting i never used to warm up, and i think i jumped to quicky into movements like bench press and stuff like that. I probably should have spend a few months just messing around on machines getting them ready. I just hope they don't get any worse.
