+ 3 Itty Bitty Carb Committee

ad

Recently I read a post on carb intake and It made me want to post this thread to help people understand more about carbs. I hope it helps you conquer and dominate your pre- and post workout meals..

Carbs are the body's preferred fuel source. Every gram of carbs you consume is to be used as an immediate fuel source or to restore glycogen levels. Glycogen-is the stored form of carbs energy [glucose]. Don't worry about spreading them out evenly throughout the day, you can eat most of them around your workout. 40 grams or so is sufficient prior to working out. Make sure pre workout carbs are complex carbs, meaning their Glycemic Index rating is really low. That way your body has a continual source of fuel to power your workout. After your workout you'll need a simple carb source, the opposite of the description of complex carbs. You'll need a fast digesting carb. I believe anything containing waxy maize is the most beneficial, being it's glycemic index rating is 97. When you ingest simple carbs after you workout you spike your insulin. Insulin helps your body get the nutrition to your muscle faster, stopping the catabolism. The catabolism your body is experiencing is caused by the release of the hormone cortisol. Carbs do nothing to enhance nitrogen balance, which is dependent on protein and amino acids. So I believe in drinking aminos during my workout. I usually get BSN Amino X. With the info above in consideration the bottom line is "calories in and calories out" of quality calories is what is going to determine your weight management.
