+ 1 Don't forget about platelets!

ad

So lately I've been experiencing a little higher blood pressure than normal and thought I should check my hemoglobin to see if a donation is in order since that's typically what's elevated when I experience the symptoms I have been. Well I ran my CBC and my platelets came back double the normal at 645! That means I've been walking around with a very increased chance of forming a thrombosis due to the elevated platelet count. This is a bigger risk than people realize and can be life threatening. Needless to say I'll be going in for a double platelet pheresis tomorrow. Just another thing for us all to remember to check.

If I were you, I would take baby aspirin.

His presumption is that it thins the blood. My presumption is that all health and diet "norms" go out the window when you're using AAS.

Yes sir anti-coagulant is correct. I really hate the whole "thins blood" terminology

Greg's picture

Does both actually at least according to the heart foundation. I suspect it does less thinning than it acts as an anticoagulant. Heck, even drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated "thins" the blood

XmadXscientist's picture

Yeah I'm just being technical because there isn't really a way to "thin" the blood. There's anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs both of which work to prevent blood clots which is what is typically referred to as "thinning blood". Like you said you can properly hydrate which will help to keep you hematocrit in normal range. The way the terminology is used bothers me is all because I'm crazy.

Crazy? I thought you were outright mad.

Everyone should be taking a baby aspirin a day to keep blood thin and prevent strokes and heart attacks. May save your life. Good info mad scientist

Why baby asprin? and not a normal asprin I've always wondered that

DragonDog's picture

As Greg said, and a small dose is all that is required to get the blood thinning effects.

I'm a big fan of Alka seltzer when I'm sick and it has 650mg aspirin in it. I use it 2-3 times per day since the box tells you this is OK for 10 days or so I think. Well after a week and a half my liver enzymes were 30-40% about the normal limit. Obviously I was using about 6 times the amount that one a day would put you at but over time this can have some negative effects, some of which Greg mentioned.
