+ 4 BREATHE STUPID! BREATHE!

ad

Ok... so I've been "back" for about 3 wks and getting back into rhythm has SUCKED!

  1. Diet - Not as good as it could be but not terrible
  2. Rest - Horrible but getting better (fighting with internal clock)
  3. Training - A struggle, sporadic at best
3(a) Gear - On Cruise so I have no misconceptions of abilities

Even given these factors I could tell there was still something "not right"...

So after last weeks completely uninspiring attempt to get back "to it" I self banned myself from the gym because I don't even deserve to be there! No I didn't give up, I replaced the gym with the park around the corner. There is a track and a circuit course there. Yesterday I went through some cardio and circuit routines to feel it out and BAM! I found the problem - I FORGOT HOW TO BREATHE!

Now to some of the newer guys I am sure I sound like a total moron but I know there are the brothers (and sisters) that know what I mean.

So this morning I went through quite a few low intensity routines, kept movements slow and deliberate and matched my breathing to the movememts and BAM! best workout I've had in weeks. My stomach muscles actually hurt from "breathing".

I will spend the next two weeks at the park relearning how to breathe and then I am sure it will be MONSTERTIME!!

The Devil is in the Details my friends... The Devil is in the Details :))

breathing correctly is a basic concept that one rarely talks about .. maybe because it is an automatic thing for most people, however, for those of us who have asthma, breathing is something we think about given that there are times when we can't. You might also want to consider taking up yoga as it will help train you to breathe as well as assist with flexibility.... Which is another thing we don't discuss here much but will add considerable momentum to your ability to grow .

western yoga (like most things brought form the east) has been westernized. The breathing tecniques have been modified to fit our culture. For many of us to "truly breathe" can cause serious harm if not properly trained (crazy,I know?!!)

western everything has been modified adapted and twisted to be made easier for our "culture" not crazy at all and very true
.. Yoga, and knowing how to breathe kept me from serious pain during pregnancy and labor. To do something half assed is not in my nature o-O

Being able to control pain with breathing has to be one of the most advanced forms of mind, body and spirit in my opinion. Most think that it can't be done, however if you learn how to channel your air way properly and use that energy to take your mind to a deep meditation you can over come pain... you are a bad women.. but you know that.. I've told you at least twice today..

That's a perfect example and you are correct. I've had two panic attacks both I was able to calm myself and I knew what was going on and why.. (No meds needed). Others I've known have the same type of attack and just could not see how I was able to do that.. Now, my ex sister in law I could talk to her.. explain step by step what she needed to do to calm herself and reach a stable pattern.. but she could not do it alone. I do believe that those persons are just not as in touch with themselves as we are. You've got to know your body, trust your instincts and know that you have this under control. Most do not have that much faith in themselves to do it.

If you are referring to Pranayama, then you are correct if not done correctly you can cause harm. Having the ability to control and lengthen the breathing to transfer it to an energy isn't easy and normally isn't taught until you reach an advance stage.*

Me loves an edu-ma-cated woman ;)

The short shallow breaths the avg human has indoctrinated to does have an overall effect on well being :(

Yoga became my pathway to overcoming having Lupus some years back.. I was told I didn't need to be in the gym and I was taking a lot of steroids (ya go figure LOL) so I was putting on a ton of weight.. I started doing yoga and it wasn't long before I realized that it's not just about the movement.. You can control so much of your body just with the air you are taking in.. also you can achieve a deep meditation which to be can benefit the mind and the body. Long story short.. I lost over 20lbs.. doing just yoga and breathing exercises.

Hey hollywood! gotta question for you. I also have a couple parks close by with paved tracks, trails and whatnot. You mind giving me some examples of your circuit course work? slacking on cardio lately and looking to implement something new and different.

I've totally forgotten to breathe during sex before... oh wait... nevermind.. Smile I've had this happen to me a few times to tell the truth I was so focused on the movement and the muscle that I wasn't paying attention to the fact that air wasn't coming out of my nose or mouth.. now I make sure that I start with my breathing first.. before anything I get into a pattern that I will keep until all the reps are done.. Good job on catching it before you passed the hell out!

Great post! Proper breathing is key to many, if not most athletic endeavors. I competed in many sports and proper breathing techniques were literately the difference between winning and losing. Starting slow and matching your breathing to your workout, then ramping things up at a natural pace is perfect advice. Thanks for bringing this up and sharing your experience with breathing. It has inspired me again to make sure I'm breathing properly when I am working out. I hope others can learn from it! I certainly have.
