blood work and concerns

ad

I just got my results back and all my hormone levels came back in normal acceptable range but i had 3 things that were out of normal which really concerned me. i have scheduled an appointment with my doctor to go voer them and possibly investigat further.

ANION GAP levels- very low
WBC- very high
antigen 1 converting enzyme - very high

these three levels together are a signal of something pretty serious. im actually very concerned and angry that it took me calling my doctor about them after i reviewed my own blood work and the doctor validated those concerns but failed to mention why they hadnt noticed or inform me of them and the potential risk and indicator of serious health issues.

UPDATE: all my bloodwork came back today, reviewed them with the doctor, got my answers, its sarcoidosis. in some ways i am relieved, its treatable. I have some significant lung damage, and it explains the pericarditis i have had twice in the last 18 months and the frequency i get pneumonia. so it looks like i am going to be seeing a few specialist, internalist, cardiologist, neurologist, pulmonologist, dermatologist and an my endo. yay, yay yay, (sarcasm)all to assess the damage thats been done to my internal organs.but on a side note, i start running long term prednisone, and the endo already said he wants me on HGH which is a common treatment for it along with immuno suppressant drugs. if the prednisone doesnt get my levels in check it will be low dose chemotherapy. the over all outlook is very positive. so im happy with it all and there seems to be a huge sense of relief. i was worried it was something much much worse.

How are you feeling mentally? Depression or anxiety or anything like that?

Low Anion Gap just means your Electrolyte ratio is off (Chlorine ions, sodium, potassium, and others). Do you have the numbers of your results? (for example like 6mEq)

How is your RBC count? I see your WBC is high

Also I heard these anion gap tests can vary quite a bit and sometimes the laboratory testing calibration is not spot on so if you have irregular results it may be useful to get more testing done, possibly at another lab

mwagner630's picture

WBC 4.00 - 10.80 K/uL mine 16.20
antigen 1 converting enzyme 9 - 67 U/L mine 91
anion gap levels 5-14 mine 3
RBC 4.50 - 5.25 M/uL mine 5.93
HGB 14.0 - 16.8 g/dL mine 17.8
HCT 40.0 - 48.4 % mine 54.1

mentally i dont feel much different. aside from feeling less mental clarity, and some confusion from time to time. its the physical aspect of feeling constantly fatigued that is driving me nuts.

all my thryroid levels are normal

I hope it's nothing serious bro and you'll be back to normal in no time. Keeep your head up and show that bitch (sickness) who's the man!!!

Mwag,
check out the list of blood tests on labsmd.com,
Make sure your Dr is getting all the tests you think you need, and get them on your own if he doesnt.

labsmd breaks down all the tests into groups. Auto immune and cancer profiles have their own group of tests.

Hope you got something minor....

i spoke to my doctor this evening for a few minutes. i am going to be tested for a myriad of autoimmune diseases along with a total cancer profile, but it looks like based on medical history, sarcoidosis is the most likely suspect at this point. sarcoidosis is treatable, manageable but not curable and can cause serious lung, heart and organ damage. this would explain a lot honestly.

I go friday for blood work and a lumbar puncture. I am not looking forward to it at all.

probably a little early to pin this on any particular disease. Try not to stress too much. You'll need much more testing before knowing anything for sure. Good luck to you man. Stay up!

i didnt realize because i dont speak to my oldest sister very often (strained relationship) she has been on low dose chemo for almost 2 years to treat sarcoidosis. she is actually using HGH right now for it also. so apparently there is a family history i was unaware of.

Good luck brother, we are all here for support.

Are you on cycle or in PCT? If not, how long since either of those?

mwagner630's picture

I'm medical trt, been for a few years. Crusing a year, all my hormones are good. These three things aren't hormone related. They're present together in serious cancers, serious disease, and auto immune diseases but the levels I have are most common in multple myeloma cancer. I don't think its that but these are the three things they test for when looking for an indicator of certain grave illnesses and cancers.

Dragon992's picture

So you've ruled out hormone-related issues, and if I were you I'd find a better doc asap. Hopefully one that will run more tests and rule out some of those really serious problems you mentioned.

I really hope you find some help quickly, and please let us know what happens. People around here know the importance of blood tests, so hopefully I and others can learn from whatever it is you're going through, even if it has nothing to do with hormones.

no actually, ive felt horrible for a few months. I feel as if im just coming down with or getting over the flu all the time. lethargy, exhaustion, cloudy mind, general soreness, and I have literally been running a fever for 2 months. it hasnt been under 99.8 in over a month, generally around 101. I addressed these issue with the doc and that is as far as it went. so i will address them again at the next appointment, but more assertively and aggressive.
the doc has kept giving me antibiotics, and the last time i just refused. im a just frustrated with feeling this way.

The Impastable's picture

You need to get a second opinion bro. If what they've been doing hasn't been working, they need a different approach.

mwagner630's picture

i really feel as if the combined levels havent been looked at as a whole picture and have been pretty much over looked or ignored all together. everything else is normal, all my bloods came back good, accept for those 3 things, and if you look up those 3 things, together theyre very serious

The Impastable's picture

Your best bet is really getting re-tested, or getting a second doctor to run tests and give you an evaluation. When it comes to your health, there's no such thing as being too cautious.

mwagner630's picture

They were in the not norm range in my last bloods also 2 months ago, way worse in the the most recent. So its obviously progressive. I go in for additional bloods friday morning.
