Best Cardio for aiding Lifting sessions

ad

Since admittedly becoming a bit lazy and using the car more and walking less when going places I've really noticed my general fitness level decrease, I didn't realise just how much good it was doing me. Which led me on to wondering what everyone does when going to well equipped gyms with all the hill climbers & cycles etc.

What do people find the best form of cardio or exercise is to do that's generally around 10 to 20 mins that they find really benefits their weightlifting sessions?

Dets's picture

The hill climb.

Find a hill. Book up it. Rinse and repeat.

Prepare to be exhausted in 10 minutes.

I get my cardio in between sets most days just by walking around the gym and cleaning up from all the morons leaving their plates on the equiptment, organizing the plates and putting away the cable attachements. Haha. I actually enjoy keeping my gym clean.

No but aeriously, stair master 30 min 4x a week

For me personally, rowing. I absolutely love it. And it engages my whole body. I get off that sucker feeling like a million bucks.

I walk between sets.. usually laps around the gym. it's good for recovery and mobility and I don't even have to get on a machine

kodiakGRRL's picture

my new workout partner took my cardio from me and wont let me load the plates... the only day I am really grateful for that is dead lift day

DfromPhilly's picture

I've been trying to train my dog to load my plates on deadlift day... no dice so far. She's not into it either.

I got her the dead wedge and everything...

It might just be that other than using her tongue she has no way of lifting up a 45lb plate LOL Plus the collars could be tricky to get on and off!

She’s got a nose and feet... I yell at her for not having thumbs all of the time. She needs to be more innovative. Lol

Ozninjaguy's picture

Some interesting trivia....technically, she may have thumbs - the Dew Claws - just not opposing thumbs like Primates have. Some dogs can use their Dew Claws for climbing, grasping and scratching - while others don't seem to be able to use them, and still others don't have them.

kodiakGRRL's picture

one of my pups uses her damn toes like they are fingers ...but she was raised with cats. she runs window sills and climbs on the backs of chairs to sleep as well.

I sure hope your dog's not a golden retriever.

kodiakGRRL's picture

nope ... but I do want one so I can name it Lucy...

Porkbythapound's picture

I think I remember you having mals. I may possibly be in the market for one sometime. You have any regrets with their temperament?

kodiakGRRL's picture

absolutely not .. but get a reputable breeder and one who will match you with what you are looking for .... be prepared to work with your dog every day .. these are not couch dogs .. they MUST be worked .. you MUST develop a relationship with them.. these are not pets and they will come up the leash at their handler if they fuck up and in most cases it is well deserved

DfromPhilly's picture

If there's a reference there I definitely missed it. But my fiancée wants to name a female rottweiler "Mr. Sprinkles"... she's a special one.

kodiakGRRL's picture

LOL I love it

You are gonna have to explain that one to me Kodiak? ..lol

lol... she's smart

DfromPhilly's picture

Hopefully I don’t fall into that trap. Only 10 months in being serious about strength, but I can’t see going back to bro lifting. I feel like I have more of a purpose now. I’m still pretty new to PL/strongman type training.

Gonna have to pick your brain a little. Planning on doing a meet this fall

kodiakGRRL's picture

I spend most of the year training sub max .. I peak for meets and I keep up on my mobility and movement and when I have an issue I take care of it ... I didn't do the lets do ten meets in a year thing and I follow my coaches programming ... I m not interested in pr's or maxing out (until I get to a meet)

DfromPhilly's picture

Nice. Gonna have to pick your brain too. So many ways to tackle it. I keep looking at conjugate but I’m raw so some say it wouldn’t be best. I do steal the variation based on weeknesses aspect of it though

kodiakGRRL's picture

even assisted lifters spend the majority of their time training raw until meet prep .... I use a block periodization it works well and when it doesn't I ll change it ...

press1's picture

I second that not that I have one as I train alone Lol - But bending down & loading the plates after your sets is a REAL pain in the ass isn't it! Extra exhaustion that you don't need .....

Yes, I do the exact same thing. I usually pick up around 5,000 steps during a lifting session from pacing the floor in between sets.

kodiakGRRL's picture

Yep !! call me lazy ... I work too hard in the gym and kitchen to burn it up on a machine

Eagles 2013's picture

Heard that!!

tyler0628's picture

Personally, ive always been a fan of the cycle / spin bike. Easy to get my heart rate up and keep a sweat going. Usually finish off my lifting sessions 3x a week with 25 minutes.

Eagles 2013's picture

Have you ever checked out Crossfit Football? It's a spin on Crosscut but designed for strength training and athletic performance. It's structured like Crosscut except you will do one or two olympic lifts and then a HIIT cardio session that blends in strength training.

An example would be on back day after the strength portion of it you would have something like "8 rounds reps on Deadlifts at 65% of 1RM followed by a 100 yard sprint with 45 seconds rest between rounds".

You could pull some of the HIIT stuff out and throw it in to the end of your workouts and just match them up with the muscle groups you trained that day.

Not for everyone but good food for thought

press1's picture

I've never heard of it before mate - But Damn that sounds extremely hard Lol

Deadlifts followed by a 100 yard sprint and then only 45 seconds rest??! What are you trying to do - Kill me?? Hahaha

Makwa's picture

I can't even stand up after deadlifts and now I would have to run, well, I don't run either. Don't think I would be trying it. lol

press1's picture

It sounds like Brutal torture doesn't it lol Its difficult just to walk after a DL set let alone run. Don't worry Mak I'll be joining you on the resting chairs also ...

It's made me puke in the past but it's a damn good program. It was designed by a former NFL Offensive Lineman and meant to replicate the type of sport specific strength training they did. Basically the balance of brute strength, explosiveness and overall endurance. It's also a great way to trim up while adding strength as well.

DfromPhilly's picture

so, strongman training? ;)

Eagles 2013's picture

For all intents and purposes yes

DfromPhilly's picture

lol i was just havin fun. In all seriousness, it sounds bad ass. i'll tell ya that much.

Eagles 2013's picture

Haha I know bro. It's no joke that's for sure
