+ 7 BASAL METABOLISM RATE (BMR)
Basal Metabolic Rate is the minimal caloric requirement needed to sustain life in a resting individual. This is the amount of energy your body would burn if you slept all day (24 hours).
There are numerous factors that affect BMR. When we are young, many of us have metabolisms that race like furnaces. Simply put, that's why some young people can eat fattening foods all day long, and never seem to gain any weight.
Conversely, by the age of 50, most of us can look at food, and seem to gain weight. However, if we study BMR, we will see that although it takes more work, we can speed up, and tune-up our metabolism.
Muscle requires more calories to sustain per pound than fat. Therefore, by sparing is much lean tissue as possible and by adding as much lean tissue as possible later on; we are able to speed up our metabolism by increasing our BMR, and burning more calories.
Resistance training, and cardio burn calories, and speed up our metabolism. Cardio is especially effective in this area, as it makes our bodies speed up many processes, and increase the secretion of adrenal hormones such as nor epinephrine, and adrenaline. These adrenal hormones create a catabolic effect that increases the speed at which we metabolize blood sugar, and burn fat.
Foods and beverages can actually increase the speed of your metabolism. For example, anything that has a stimulating effect may fall into this category. Products containing caffeine, such as coffee are a good example of this.
Stimulants can cause stress in some people, and as you know success in weight loss is dependent upon keeping stress levels low.
Although stimulants will produce faster weight loss, if they stress the individual, than the individual may be more likely to quit or give up. Therefore, it may be better to lose fat slower, maintaining low stress levels, and therefore increasing the likelihood of success in the long run.
Fasting, or skipping meals will lower BMR. The body automatically responds with a starvation reaction. When your body is not getting sufficient amounts of food, it goes into this starvation mode, or metabolic rates can become so slow; weight loss becomes almost impossible.
Numerous hormones diminish as we get older which affect our BMR. These hormones include DHEA, growth hormone, leutinizing hormone, testosterone in men, and thyroxin (T3). A few lucky individuals do not suffer as great a drop in these hormones as most. However, for the rest of us it's hard work, but we can reverse this trend to some extent by using diet, supplementation, exercise, proper sleep and recovery.
AAS users are able to more easily manipulate hormones exogenously, and we see results far in excess of non users! By using HGH; T3; Clenbuterol and Anabolic Hormones we can achieve bodies the envy of kids half our age!
The higher we can get our BMR, and under safe conditions, the faster we will lose weight and add muscle.
Remember, as your muscle to fat ratio increases, your BMR does go up. An average person weighing 200 pounds, who is leading an active life, will probably be able to attain sufficient weight loss by consuming approximately 2500 calories per day. This amount will vary from person to person, and may need to be adjusted. For example, a very sedentary person may need to consume fewer calories.
Also, as people restrict caloric intake, BMR will automatically go down, because of the hibernation/starvation response.
Once you are successful at tuning up your metabolism, and revving up your BMR, keeping fat off becomes much easier. This also increases your success rate, and of course you will feel younger and more vital.
In closing, you can see the BMR plays a very key role in BF per cent muscle gain fat loss, and anti aging. Therefore, do everything you possibly can to maintain a maximum BMR.

I dunno if people just didnt read this post properly before commenting or what, but it is pretty much just all wrong and extremely naive.
Hopefully the kiddies ignore the recommendations, for their health's sake.
The part that got me thinking was the intermittent fasting part and not losing weight. Everyone that i have recommemed intermittent fasting has lost weight.
lol absolutely!
Intermittent fasting does not slow metabolism down enough to cause weight gain. It is when people starve for prolonged periods of time they will experience this effect.
In fact, intermittent fasting slows metabolism AND spurs lipolysis John. It promotes growth hormone secretion.
Yep.......that's kind of the whole piont of intermittent fasting (was my understanding).
Exactly kibby, man. Lowers BMR and promotes fat loss.
Why on earth would a bulker want to speed his base resting metabolism (which burns muscle) up?
Yes sir eating into all those gains....doesn't make sense;)
You're right. That wouldn't make much sense at all.
Ain't that the truth. Smelling it also makes me gain weight. In fact, just thinking about food seems to make me gain weight nowadays. I sure do miss the old days.
I know right. I hear people I work with all the time saying how they stopped eating less and yet they still gain weight. I keep telling them to eat more frequently with different foods. Do you think they listen....NOPE
Great post man.
People tend to eat less in hopes of losing more. Actually they engage the starvation function and therefore fat storing.
My father per say.
He gained ton of fat becouse he tried to loose fat. How you may ask.
By eating once a day.. And in that meal, full stomach. All day struggling and suffering the need to eat. And then in one go consuming all. In hopes of losing the fat. He initiated the hibernation function and fat storing.
When body sees food on that mode, it will try to store it immediately for later.
Logically.
Tnx for the post.

RustyhookerExcellent!!
Stress raises cortisol which then will add fat. And natural levels being kept in check is a huge help as we get old. My metabolism was slowing and ran bloods last winter and my hgh was at bottom of the range. After winter cycle bloods showed my body wasnt responding to pct and then trt was needed. That combo of low hormones has me pushing hard currently to get back on track. Especially after last winter i made great improvements.
yea man, how is the TRT comin along tho?
RustyhookerGood! Not in mental fog anymore. Few weeks to first bloods and see where i am. But lots better.
It's a battle against age for sure, but you will always succeed!
