+ 18 ***DON'T GET EATEN BY THE FALSESAURUS..DANGEROUS LAB INTERFERENCE CAUSING FALSE-POSITIVE/NEGATIVE

ad

I wanted to make the community aware of a problem with blood testing that may stick it's ugly head up and bite you. Back in November of 2017 the FDA put out a WARNING that HIGH DOSE Biotin use can throw a lab test off. The warning was made after a patient died. Person went to the emergency room and was complaining of chest pain. Dr ordered a troponin test. What's that you ask. Doctors measure your troponin levels to detect whether or not you’re experiencing a heart attack. His came back normal. Hour later he had a massive heart attack and died. They were perplex how did this happen. Why was the troponin test normal. After an investigation it was determined that the patient had been taking high dose biotin which interfered with the testing method. So what's the big deal. These inaccurate test results can cause healthcare practitioners to misdiagnose and mistreat their patients. Once the warning came out lab companies started checking out can biotin interfere with other tests. You see biotin is used in quite a few lab tests (biotin-streptavidin technology). All the major testing companies use this technology for some of their tests. LabCorp and Quest use it. So what tests can be affected. The list is long. Follow this link and scroll to tables 2 and 3.
https://pharmacysolutionsonline.com/blog/clinical-application-and-danger...

As you can see it affects quite a few of the tests we take. The implications are enormous. Example E2 will show elevated when it's not. Which can cause mis-dosing AI. Testosterone will show elevated which can impact guys on TRT causing dosage adjustments or those who are really low and needing TRT but testing above the threshold. TSH will read low.See the problem.

I want to note that there is no consensus on what is consider HIGH BIOTIN use. The link above states >10mg (10,000 mcg), others state 5 mg (5000 mcg) and still some tests are affected with less.
So the question is what to do if your taking Biotin. The easiest thing to do is stop taking it before testing. How long before testing so it doesn't interfere you ask. Again there is no consensus. Labcorp ran a test and said that Biotin did not interfere with some test after 8hrs with others it was longer. After extensive research some say 3 days others say 7 days depending on what your testing.

Have you noticed they started putting a warning on some on some of the tests.

"This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R). It is recommended to ask all patients who may be indicated for this test about biotin supplementation. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample." ON A SIDE NOTE I HAVE NEVER BEEN ASKED IF I WAS TAKING BIOTIN BEFORE DRAWING BLOOD.

So how do you know if Biotin will interfere with the test your taking. With LabCorp go to this link: https://www.labcorp.com/test-menu/search find your test. Example CLINK ON T. I picked testosterone total serum test#004226. Scroll down till you see "Clinical Information". If Biotin interferes with your test you will see this header "Special Instructions" with the Biotin warning quoted above that this test has interference with Biotin use.

Biotin does not interfere WITH LC/MS or LC/MSMS TESTING. Abbott ARCHITECT assays DO NOT utilize the biotin-streptavidin capture method during the sample testing process.
Be safe and like always let me know what you think. Have you ever ran into this problem. I know I have and it wasn't fun. That's why I writing this. additional links below

I cannot go into too much detail due to the nature of my business but I 100% back MegaT on this one.
