+ 4 What are your tips for saving money on groceries and meals?

ad

Over the last couple years my grocery bill has gone through the roof. To feed just myself and a dog i spend anywhere from $70-100/week at the grocery store pretty easily. So i'm looking for all you're tips & hacks for both getting groceries cheaper and meals that can be made on a budget while still being filling and reasonably good for getting in the macros/calories we're trying to get in.

So, what do you boys got?

Pumped_'s picture

First time i had 2 choices, Hilary or Trump. Being a God fearing conservative i voted for Trump so Hilary dont get in. Dont make me a fan just still a conservative. 2nd round it was Biden or Trump and same reason i voted for Trump. I could have not voted but would have been a spit in the face of all the black men and women that got their heads beat in, lynched and bit by police dogs that fought so me as a black man can have a right to vote.

DeeMan's picture

I just see things how they are and both parties do crazy shit and point fingers at each other whilst covering up their own wrong doings lol. I see through all that and it doesn't make me an anarchist at all but more of a realist. Hey man you and everyone has the right to vote for whomever and feel however about a particular candidate or President. It's going to take alot to get us out this sinkhole and not sure who can pull us out but hopefully someone or some party can.

SeeOhShow's picture

Shit just being a true red blooded American should preclude anyone from voting Hilary for any position or title. Political affiliations aside she deserves to be put down. Or better yet forced to live in Libya by herself with no protection. Just let her fend for herself as long as she can. See how she likes it. Fucking cunt

So why does the price of gas fluctuate? Why doesn't it just always stay at its highs?

DeeMan's picture

Shit the basic laws of economics

SeeOhShow's picture

Supply and demand. And we don’t control it because we don’t make enough domestically. Whatever retard sits in the Oval Office makes no difference. All of congress on both sides is fucking retarded and corrupt too. Especially the 90 year old ones who aren’t fit for office

Steeltoad777's picture

So oil and gas is basic economics but everything else is whatever price they wanna charge us?

So why was gas cheaper when we were importing less and taking more out of the ground here?

Classic TDS folks. Nothing matters. Don't vote it won't matter. Lol... that's why we're at where we're at. We got probably intelligent people (you guys) who choose not to participate and let all the idiots vote. If you don't vote, you shouldn't even have a say in the matter and should just stfu.

lol you’re getting a little emotional here man. This is precisely why I don’t get involved in politics. Level heads never prevail. Can we just get back to the gains?

Steeltoad777's picture

So don't get involved in politics then. Dont even give your opinion. It's like giving a presentation on a subject you don't know anything about lol.

I’m pretty sure thats what we did all through school from elementary through college, so why stop now?

But I do pay taxes. Therefore I’m 100% entitled to an opinion on the government which steals a lot of my money with nothing to show in return. How many CRs are we on now? Yea….

DeeMan's picture

Yep we share the same thoughts. It's called reality

DeeMan's picture

Omg!!! Here comes the eroids political machine. We told you to run for office. Going against those 2 you'll probably win. We need someone new.

Bulk cook and freeze is what my wife does mate since this cost of living crisis in the uk. I don’t really eat the same food as the wife and kids unless it’s a chicken and rice dish or occasionally roast dinner.
There’s me the mrs my daughter and one of my sons live at home but he’s a 19 year old man. Our shopping bill is anywhere from £300-£340 GBP a week depending if she’s bought many cleaning bits. That includes my lean mince beef and tray of chicken breast from the butchers shop then on top of that I buy my liquid egg whites on my Amazon account

I tend to do 2 medium sized shops per week as I enjoy doing it trying different things out, they only use to cost me around £30 about 3 years ago - now they are £50 a time due to all the increases in each of the products. I use to walk round constantly cursing at the sight of everything rising each time I went in there.

HENCH500's picture

Crazy isn’t it … worlds a fucked place when the cheese and butter are locked in security tag cases remember when that was just spirits and razor blades ?

press1's picture

Damn mate that hasn't hit me yet up here, when I bought some new toothbrush heads they were tagged and she was demanding a receipt to unlock them. I was like - well just like most people I never bother with my supermarket receipt as in reality what am I gonna bring back? LMAO

DeeMan's picture

Damn 300-400 a week..that's alot. We've talked, I need to up my game if I want to have your mass.

Black90tsi's picture

That's $380-508 in dollars. That's more than my rent in a month even on the lower end.

HENCH500's picture

£300-340 but it’s not even the good shit that cost money it’s all the crap she buys fucking rollo yougurts and junk food , cans of pop and garbage the kids eat .. she packs the daughter up for school and soon up for college every day too so that’s not cheap

Hot damn. That puts it all in perspective. Shits rough man. Man one point grocery prices seemed to be going down but I know now that was just a tease. I was all happy but that smile left my face real damn fast. Just a bad time to be a bodybuilder. I have plenty of money but damn!

SeeOhShow's picture

Eggs, whole milk, bulk rice, bulk beans, and meats on sale. You can buy whole loins (striploin, whole tenderloin, rib roast, whole picanha) butcher them yourself, vacuum seal up portions, and freeze for later. Or you can shoot a couple good sized deer each year and vacuum seal it all up, throw it in a chest freezer, and not have to buy so much meat except for special occasions. Eating cheap tends to end up eating the same things very often because you find very cheap/simple recipes. Chili, spaghetti, burgers, stroganoff, bolognese, etc. Ground meat is very versatile.

Black90tsi's picture

I definitely eat the same thing most days. I eat the same basic breakfast of oatmeal with a protein mix in, 2 eggs and a protein shake most days. Lunch tends to be 8 oz of 93/7 ground beef with 1 cup of jasmine rice and a couple teaspoons of bbq sauce. Dinner is the same as lunch except i add in 3 scrambled eggs w/ low fat cheese and use hot sauce instead of bbq sauce.

I def need to up my kitchen game some. I get comfortable making something and just stick with it for months on end. I do buy tons of eggs, dairy, rice, potatoes and beef/chicken/pork.

DeeMan's picture

Your routine is basic like my routine is but minus the PIG!

Black90tsi's picture

I cook up the beef in 1/4 lb patties and rice on the weekend and just have to reheat it during the week. I always cook the eggs fresh. Microwaved eggs make me cringe.

DeeMan's picture

Nahh no way I'd microwave eggs. I see some bodybuilders doing that though.

SeeOhShow's picture

Well I hate to break it to you, your grocery bill ain’t getting any cheaper if you’re already doing all that lmao. Shit is just crazy.

DeeMan's picture

Tell the grocery store that they could at least lower the price of eggs. Wish I could hunt my protein and store it all in a big freezer. But these are the times we live in.

SeeOhShow's picture

I buy the shitty store brand eggs. The free range organic ones taste so much better but I’m not spending $9 on a dozen eggs. It’s fucked up that I could feed myself for 1/3 the cost going to McDonald’s every meal of every day than just trying to eat some whole healthy foods. Not even gourmet foods just standard shit.

DeeMan's picture

Did you just say $9 for a dozen organic eggs? Ain't no way in the world lol. Wow I completely understand. I buy the store brand eggs myself but even those prices are rising higher and higher. At some point you would think we should come out of this shit hole. But who knows when.

SeeOhShow's picture

Yea the fancy brown ones. No joke. I think store brand 18 count cartons is $4-5 around me.

DeeMan's picture

That's crazy. Eggs are fundamentally every bodybuilders stable as far as diet. They picked the most important protein to raise prices on alot. But inflation takes the nation...

press1's picture

Aside from protein sources, you can never go wrong with a big bag of White Jacket potatoes! Very cheap and extremely effective pre workout with a tuna, sweetcorn and mayo filling & salt, or whatever you want. Ideal post workout too for restoring carbs and bulking on.

wanted's picture

Press you eat tuna. Some guys make fun of me here
85 cents a packet with 16 grams protein

SeeOhShow's picture

I just ate 3 of those packets lol. Rip it open and eat it straight out with a fork. I buy the “lower sodium” ones in bulk cases. Tuna, salmon, and chicken breast ones.

I get made fun of too by coworkers. It’s like reverse fat shaming. They make fun of me for being strict with my diet. Say I have body dysmorphia lol

DeeMan's picture

And I thought I was the only one being made fun of by my coworkers for eating tuna out the can.

press1's picture

Are these foil pouches containing different flavours and dishes then? I love Chicken breast in white wine sauce over here, on toast covered in pepper. Use to be really cheap but tasty too - now they are as expensive as ready meals. Tuna is still cheap though by its own in a can.

SeeOhShow's picture

They have flavored pouches but the sodium and protein content sucks. What we’re talking about is just this. They come in salmon, chicken, or tuna. I just eat it plain straight out the pouch with some water.

DeeMan's picture

I just devoured 3 packs of those at once a few nights ago. Mine were flavored. Good stuff

press1's picture

Thats a bit too raw for me bud, I'd have to have some kind of lube in there such as mayonnaise or dressing. I guess they even take that nice salty taste out of it too?!

wanted's picture

Mayo is to good to be healthy press lol
My packet comes in zesty lemon pepper

press1's picture

Yeah thats one of the varieties we get over here - you can also get packs where it comes with potatoes, sweetcorn, peppers etc. Oh and tuna and tomatoe pasta packets Good

SeeOhShow's picture

Hardcore lifestyle man lol I don’t need all my food to taste great. I just need macros and calories. I can tough through a lot of shitty/plain food for my goals.

press1's picture

Nice tasting food is definitely one of the great pleasures in life, when I caught Covid and couldn't taste anything for 2 weeks it was horrible and made eating boring and mundane. I really started to worry I'd never get my sense of taste back - I think Makwa lost his for about 6 months afterwards or maybe more.

SeeOhShow's picture

Oh I’m the cook of the house, a rather skilled baker, and fairly capable with an offset smoker. I love good tasting food. I just don’t “need” it, ya know? My goals always trump my desire for delicious food. So I’ll cook my wife something delicious and sit down and eat plain chicken, rice, and green beans next to her. If im bulking then yes we’ll eat the same things just much larger portions for me.

press1's picture

Tuna is Wicked protein mate and its tasty and cheap!!! Lol Tuna, sweetcorn and Mayo is the favourite over here, or you can go spunky and do Tuna, Hard boiled egg and French vinegarette!! If you can get the tinned Tuna Steak then that is the best stuff - its a little more expensive than Tuna chunks but the fish is much better quality and more tasty. Basically War Bunker food but really healthy Good

creatinehcl's picture

Unfortunately, tuna is full of heavy metals and I would not recommend anyone to eat too much of it. I personally threw it out completely because of this, even though it is a cheap source of protein.

In a promo × 1
SeeOhShow's picture

The light tuna that gets made from skipjack and yellowfin has significantly less heavy metals/mercury in it than albacore. They get harvested much younger/smaller and thus get much less bioaccumulation of those metals. This is of course on average. You can get outliers as goes with everything. But there’s still the salmon and chicken breast cans/pouches that are just as cheap as the tuna ones

HENCH500's picture

No that’s good living bro … guess what I’m going Asda for in the morning

HAHAHA Hey mate if you haven't tried it yet - Get some of that Arla chocolate protein pudding in the yoghurt carton. Nicest pudding you have EVER tasted and 20g per pot. Also the Chocloate RTD shake in the tall bottle, really really nice just to have in the day if you need stuff at work.

Jacob_29's picture

Look for loss-leaders: Costco $5 rotisserie chicken is the perfect example.

Strategically purchasing ground beef in bulk during sales and then freezing it.

Don't know what else. It's been brutal over the past few years due to inflation. If you have Aldi in your area, their ground turkey, full skin chicken, and ground beef usually have good prices.
