+ 2 Umbilical hernia repair
Looking for feedback on few things from anyone who’s had similar surgery.I've been MIA from here for last 5weeks I've been out of action for a Hernia repair (Non Mesh) caught it early I suppose. . Then an enforced layoff of 6 weeks from the gym.
Back story, I started to notice a small air pocket in between my upper abs that continued to get bigger extending down my Linea Alba (Center line abs) rather quickly month maybe. I assumed it was Diastasis Recti but after a 2min look Doc said no this isn’t repairing itself so had immediate surgery. They went in 2” incision above belly button .
Questions:
-
The air pocket still persists when doing certain movements after surgery. I figured this would go away or decrease over time but I looks same 6 weeks post surgery. I have the localized swelling ant surgery site I understand but that I don’t. Anyone have similar experience? Have 2nd post op appointment scheduled but last one he said everything was healing perfect and I looked great.

What’s the road back look like for someone who previously trained 5days per week . 14 days post surgery the doctors first question was “You back in Gym” of course I said no thinking 6 weeks and he was like your in great shape you can start tomorrow working you way back up. Due to business travel I waited till week 6 came back light no legs full body. Just curious of what others coming off Hernia surgery splits or training looked like .
Apologize for all the paragraphs just wanted paint a picture of the situation. Any and all feedback be appreciated.

Sorry to hear buddy, hope you have a quick recovery!! As I see above you already start training again after 5 weeks..
Yes slow and steady. Checking ego at door and trusting the process my only options lol
You're lucky brother, I was off for a couple of months, or the method you did was different.. Did they give you the non high protein speech?
No he didn’t say anything about protein nor diet. Did they caution you?
Yes but and it suck big time... They fear high protein may cause constipation and it was definitely a no go. BTW I checked your photos.. No homo lol didn't find anything wrong no hernia.. If you check my old pics mine was a bitch!!
Yeh the doctor said we caught it early I never had any other signs than the protruding pocket between abs during certain exercises. No mesh thankfully he was able to just stitch.
Yeh I looked at yours I assume if I didn’t get surgery I would have been same spot not sure.
Probably yeah! I kept postpone the surgery a couple of times, that's why got so ugly lol.. I got a mesh yeah but no problem with abs, when I am not fat lol!! BTW you should get a belt if you don't use any!!
Ale gave birth to a small baby boy in the end didn't ya mate!!! LMFAO
Probably a small alien lol
I have the same issue like an air pocket that you can see when I’m laid down and crunch or sit up. I also have squish belly button , my little girl actually said dad how come your belly button is half in and half out --. You can only see the air pocket when I’m bent in certain positions but belly button top half sticks out a little bit. UK doctors said they won’t operate until it’s causing me physical problems, I thought they would repair before it’s an issue but apparently not
Sorry to hear that. Way I see it as long as there’s no other problems in there I can live with it cosmetically. Just worried something didn’t get fixed or it possibly get worse. Mine only can be seen during certain movements like you said. When I flex my abs it’s normal other than they are pulling a little to left when I squeeze
I had a very large umbilical hernia repair with a mesh about a month ago. It was huge. An eye sore for sure. I started using the stair climber at my gym I think 7-10 days post op. I started lifting again about 14 days post op. I put my weight belt on really tight hoping that would help. I waited till the 3rd week before I did squats. Being just 30 days post op I feel great and have had no discomfort and I felt comfortable lifting when I did even though I started with light weights.
Good to hear thanks for the feedback I wish you an easy road back!!
Luckily touch wood a Hernia is something I have never had, but I know a man that has who will be able to offer some advice and experience. @alekaras
What's up you old fart lmao!!
Hey age comes in handy now when you need excuses bro!!!
That's 100% correct buddy lol
Thank you for the @
Most importantly make a list of questions you have and ask your doc. Follow doctor's instructions.
I have not had an umbilical repair but have some knowledge regarding the GI track and anatomy. The most important thing I believe early on would be to avoid major movements that cause an increase in intra-abdominal pressure. Lifts that people often wear a belt for and/or bend at the waste. I would personally avoid bent over rows, heavy squats and dead lifts early on. Ensure you are not holding your breath during lifts.
I would Google physical therapy for "umbilical hernia repair" I am sure strengthening and rebuilding those muscles in the prior site of the hernia will help prevent a reoccurance.
Also, if possible I would try to avoid lifting late in the day after you have eaten several big meals or right after a big meal.
Just what I would personally would do. I am sure someone on here has had this surgery and will hopefully post about their experience.
Best of luck with everything. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Thank you for the feedback it’s appreciated. The holding breath thing I caught my self doing that the other night. I work out late also usually 7pm but meals are Fairly light up to that point.
Agreed we on lifts to avoid. Also keeping everything light for next month.
Hey man I'm just curious what did it look like for you to catch it early?? I've been worried about this same thing but just to know from your experience
First thing I noticed was in a picture believe it or not. I was at beach and wife snapped picture with my shirt off and I noticed my abs centerline was way left. Thought it was how I was standing but started paying closer attention. I was doing some knee raises looking at my stomach and noticed a peanut size air pocket on center line (between 2nd abs) thought it was nothing but continued to watch it over next few weeks and noticed it got to size of a dime. Few weeks later I was laying flat on floor doing static feet holds and WOW it was protruding and the shape changed to a long oval shape protruding toward belly button right on center line. So I put it off another few weeks thinking it was nothing but was encouraged to go have it looked at. Glad I did no mesh.
So if you think something’s wrong just go get checked at your doc office they will send you for ultrasound and then surgeon. Please do it sooner than later. I should have went minute I seen it so lesson learned I’m sharing with you. Hope this helps
Yeah. Good info. Hope everything turns out better for you, man!
