Pandemic shut downs prompted me to convert the storage side of my basement into a pretty cool home gym. Turned out to be the best thing I ever did because my whole family jumped on board and started training more seriously. All kidding aside, we are now in the best shape of our lives. The convenience keeps us all dedicated, I rarely skip a workout, unless I had an exhausting day at work. If so, I wake up early the next morning and make up the workout. I’m currently on vacation in Jamaica, and have been using the gym here. I must admit, I miss a lot of the machines we don’t have at home, and can feel the soreness of muscles I must not be hitting regularly at home. After five days in the hotel gym, my wife feels like she’s been hit by a truck. Could also be all the sex though, LOL. Anyway, we might have to join a gym when we get home, although I don’t miss sharing equipment with people who don’t have a clue what they’re doing. Not to mention the cell phone machine sitters or the instagram morons.

It's great that you were able to make a hall at home and at the same time you created a better shape. A fitness room can be as a variety. You're great, man.

But in addition to basic training in squats, sumo deadlifts and bench presses, I go to a regular fitness room, where there is a cardio zone and machines, where I do hypertrophy workouts.

I have an old gym, with old and rusty equipment from the 60s-70s. There are a lot of powerlifters and ex-bodybuilders out there, many in their 40s or 50s. There is a special atmosphere, in such a hall you want to give everything 100%

Its fighters gym with great weightlifting area where I go to most often. I hate ordinary gym people attending commercial fitness centers.

Powerlifting gym. A serious one. I don’t powerlift but there are us bodybuilders there

Nice one Bud, I bet there is some great equipment there and plenty of encouragement to train your ass off Lol

You are forced to hit the big heavy exercises rather than doing dumbell work, hammer strength machines, cables etc. You can still do the others too such as Barbell rows, Chins, Pull ups, Shoulder Press, Close grip bench, barbell curls, Good mornings, RDL's, Tricep Dips (if you have the attachments), T-Bar rows with barbell etc Smile

The dream is to create your own power hall at home, where you can listen to any music, scream loudly and, as you rightly noted, after that delicious food will immediately await

Oh Yes its great to be able to come into your own kitchen and make a fresh cold shake, sit on the sofa in front of the TV and then cook something.

I just love to combine a bit of mma and weights (usually getting rag-dolled lol)

press1's picture

Thing is you might get rag dolled amongst people who know how to fight, but when you are waiting in McDonalds for ya Big Mac late at night and some prick starts on you then you'll be turning them into French Fries BB!!! Lol

Seriously mate if you saw me today I look like I have been jumped by 3 guys hahaha Those street fight vids are great aren't they - often its the guy in shit shape that ends up winning as his technique is better than the guy who is loaded up with muscle!

bundlz's picture

Haha thats true but i think its something in our nature if we see a bigger guy full of muscle we need to kimbo slice him hahaha

I'm surprised so many people workout in their garage.

For me, The benefit of training at home is that it minimizes the number of things that can get in the way of me grinding it out. My home is never closed, there aren't ever others on the weights or machines that I need & I can grunt as loud as I feel like. Also, I love to train naked....

press1's picture

I agree buddy, it allows you to stay very focused on the task at hand. You can take 10 minutes rests between heavy sets if you want to without pissing someone off who wants to use your equipment, and you can do things like sit down on a proper chair rather than perch on the end of a bench which is hardly energy preserving. Definitely drawbacks too though - I imagine you miss out of tonnes of lifting advice and techniques from others guys, going for maxes in a gym where others are watching and also hitting theirs is definitely gonna make you push that bit harder I imagine. You have loads more equipment to choose from and can hit more areas but the downside of course is you have to train around others who can really irritate and piss you off - especially on gear.

I train with a bunch of fat powerlifters LOL love em though

HAHAHAHA I can just actually picture it - Low having to endure a load of boring fucks going on and on about which training program is best and whether you should grip and rip or take the slack out of the bar LMFAO

Train at a general fitness chain gym. The atmosphere isn't all that great but the people are friendly, the opening hours are great, clean and well maintained and they've got some equipment you don't generally see at chain gyms in my country like a belt squat, reverse hyper and a pull over machine.

press1's picture

Yeah got some great machines and equipment there mate - do reverse hypers really help the deadlift like they say they do or are they better for stretching the back out and easing compression?

blackjack115's picture

Bit late with my reaction. It's definitely helped big time with stretching out my lower back and easing compression, used to need a lot more warm up time to get my lower back ready for deadlifts but since using the reverse hyper it's a lot easier. As for strength gains my younger brother who's a competitive powerlifter swears by it but I haven't been using it long enough to assess it for myself.

press1's picture

This is interesting - So far the percentage of guys training at home is higher than I thought it would be, guess the TicTok sumo deadlifters are putting people off going to the gym!! lol
