Veganism?

ad

Always been a regular meat eater, nothing extreme but the thought of vegans used to make me sick and I compared them to a sect. Then I watched The Game Changers on Netflix and, what a hell of plot twist now, I'm ready to try going full on vegan.

Anyone here done it recently, did it make a difference to how you feel etc?

LexMentis's picture

I have no opinion on The Game Changers, but I have been vegan for over two years now (strictly for ethical reasons), but it certainly has had a positive impact on my health and well-being. I made the change overnight, and I have not been even slightly inconvenienced by making that decision. Great energy, motivation, strength, mental sharpness, but also that I am no longer complicit with practices and industries that are downright evil and abominable, entirely based on profiting off of the unimaginable suffering of defenseless beings. It's time for humanity to grow up and come out of the dark ages. I'm actually the heaviest and strongest that I've ever been. Though this is simply anecdotal, the point is that all the nutrients the body needs can be easily obtained through a vegan diet. So long as the body gets them, it will function properly. One only needs to research what foods have them, and then eat those foods. Simple. I even managed to accidentally consumed just shy of 300 grams of protein in a day before, so protein is certainly of no concern. While there are definitely some people out there who like to champion a vegan diet as a miracle (with good intentions), there also a lot of negative myths about it that are equally untrue. All the people claiming they were vegan but got sick, didn't have a clue what they were doing and ate like shit.

I'm so glad we have so many "woke" members of the "AAS abuse community" willing to lecture the rest of us on their ethical standards.

LexMentis's picture

Eyyy, don't be sore, pal. I simply stated my experience and personal reasoning, which this post specifically asked me for. To be honest, it's kinda sorta pathetic that you interpret that as a "lecture". Is there a reason why my input triggered that response from you? Anyone can harp on talking shit about veganism all day long, but the moment that an opinion that goes against the consensus is expressed, feelings start getting hurt. Funny how that happens.

Greg's picture

This comment is a completely gratuitous dig at us deplorable meat eaters, ranchers, and butchers et al. It has no bearing on your argument for veganism. You are not "Woke" just because glomed onto a fad.

...but also that I am no longer complicit with practices and industries that are downright evil and abominable, entirely based on profiting off of the unimaginable suffering of defenseless beings. It's time for humanity to grow up and come out of the dark ages.

I'm more than happy to listen to pros and cons, but not when being talked down to by a condescending kid.

Totika's picture

Looool I just wanted to hear what you think about the documentary and about changing to a plant based diet as Arnold himself said in the documentary and now I´m with tears and I canst stop laugh after reading all the answers!

HomebrewedII's picture

I've gotta save the food that my food eats.. Reach up into your mouth. You feel those pointy sharp teeth on each side? Guess what that means...... Simple.

Nattyboomba's picture

Actually, those teeth you're refering to are the teeth of a frugivore, which is a strict plant eating animal. If they were much larger and sharper, like say an ape or a racoon (which are both omnivores) then I would agree with you. But human digestive enzymes, digeative tract length and teeth clearly show we are not truly designed to process meat.

Greg's picture

So we are not a primate, like say an ape?

How much evolution is needed to consider modern man to be natural meat eaters? As it stands now, Homo Habilis was a regular meat eater over 2 million years ago, and he was 8 homos (no homo) before Sapiens showed up. So we have 8 evolutionary steps with meat eating and you're pointing to a time in our evolutionary line that predates homo. (no homo)

Nattyboomba's picture

Correct, we are certainly not primates. We are an entirely different species. We are homo homo sapiens. Not primates. The digestive system, beggining in the mouth with enzyme production, teeth ( the ability to move the teeth sideways to crush plant material like humans can is strictly a frugivore trait, while true omnivores like bears can only move their jaws up and down, similar to a carnivore) all the way through the stomach with significantly different variety of stomach acid production between the two, much shorter digestive tract on omnivores (so meat doesn't putrify in the gut) tells me and the progessive scientific community at large the yes, humans and apes are a completely different species. Have you ever seen an apes set of teeth? Lastyly, even if we are apes, as you suggest..... Aren't apes frugivores? Yes, they sure are. The only animal protien they consume are bugs. Maybe 10% of their caloric intake.

HomebrewedII's picture

Apes love meat too. Just like we do. If we was meant to be plant based only, we'd probably have two stomachs. Ever see what an ape does to a rat? Apes eat anything they can get a hold of. Especially animal meat. Not sure where you're copying this from. (Most likely eco watch, the eco terrorist group) but apes absolutely eat meat. Hell, they go cannibal from time to time. And our enzymes we produce in our saliva are specifically to start digesting meat.

HomebrewedII's picture

Nailed it! Not sure where this kid is copying his info from. But ahh.. He doesn't realize apes/chimps main diet is meat lol. Very interesting video. It backs up a few theories I've had about a few animals. This guy is probably the type to argue that there's also 846 genders as well. But Damn. I can't stop thinking about that video. Extremely interesting. Confirms a few things I've had a hunch about.... Raises even more questions for me.. Excellent.

Greg's picture

You missed the point. I am not denying our evolutionary path starting out as plant eaters. But you are ignoring it post homo (no homo).

Homo sapiens have been eating meat not only from day one, but from 8 evolutionary steps before becoming saipians. I would think by now that digesting meat is not a dietary concern and more than likely, necessary. Teeth and jaws didn't need to evolve (or devolve in this case) because our brain did.

We are primates. Most primates do not eat meat but will eat grubs and other insects. They will eat meat if needed as we probably did as scavenger/gatherers prehomo. Hunting without tools is a nonstarter. Grinding flesh off of the carcass of a huge animal using our teeth would have been difficult and dangerous (we'd be exposed as pray to other carnivores looking for that easy meal.)

What makes us different is our use of tools. We were able to cut meat with the use of flint tools and even cook it with the ultimate tool; fire. We were able to hunt with the use of spears, and language that surpassed communicating only about the here and now.

Besides similar anatomy and behavior, there is DNA evidence. It confirms that humans are primates and that modern humans and chimpanzees diverged from a common ancestor between 8 and 6 million years ago. There is only about a 1.2 percent genetic difference between modern humans and chimpanzees throughout much of their genetic code.

-The Smithsonian Institute

In short, Sapiens have been meat eaters from well before day one. They did not "evolve" or start eating meat after the fact.

Now, if you want to talk about the consumption of milk, you might have an argument because most of us are allergic to milk, can't digest it fully, because it was introduced into (some) of our diets very recently (when looked at with the evolutionary scale).

DfromPhilly's picture

We are, very literally, apes.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hominidae

What made you think we aren’t primates? By saying that you just discredited EVERYTHING else you said after it.

Don’t try to sound smart with bad info. Maybe if you ate more meat your brain would be functioning better.

Woah you know your stuff! - have you done all this as a study?

Well I've just read all about Homo Habilis - Interesting stuff!

Its a "pussy neg" get it right.

And you need to take a look around parks Eating massive quantities of meat is the name of the game , Diet is the biggest part of Bodybuilding period and you know this man.

The hate is not irrational , the hate is real you are trying to soap box for vegans in the wrong place. In fact this is probably the worst environment for a vegan to debate.

parks's picture

Whatever. I'm not a vegan and have no reason advocate for them.

I just don't care what they eat and don't feel threatened in any way by them. The anger at them simply mystifies me.

I got no dog in this fight. I just find the hostility curious.

What's actually fascinating about this thread is the bizarre hostility toward people who simply choose to eat differently. Why would anyone even care?

I'm sure there's pros and cons, health-wise, in eating a heavy meat protein diet or not, but why in the world would I start calling vegans a bunch of pussies? It's just weird.

Dude. Go on you tube and type in this... what of meat eaters acted like vegans... you will laugh your ass off because it depicts them just as you described them.

Manshit's picture

No homo

press1's picture

I guess its because the sport we are all passionate about relies heavily on consuming a lot of meat and protein, also I know it sounds nasty but a lot of vegetarians/vegans I know of are weak minded people that tend to cry and get upset about insignificant things.

Greg's picture

that tend to cry and get upset about insignificant things.

It's the plant based protein that converts to estrogen in men.

parks's picture

Well, it could be suggested that the problem there isn't vegans, but the caliber of people you associate with. lol

Vegans are ruining the planet. Without meat eaters cows and chickens would overrun the planet. We need to all step up and do our part... EAT MORE MEAT!

I'm missing the joke in that.

The reality is we don’t need that much extra protein.Mike Mentzer built one of the best bodies in history .75 g per lb of body weight.I went to a seminar and he claimed he built his body with a cup of half and half and a 1 can of tuna post workout..Same as Casey Viator while bothe were trained by Arthur Jones.

Vegans are just lower on the evolutionary human food chain. You cannot out perform a person that eats meat. I like my steak Rare!

No one calls vegans a bunch of pussies; that'd be redundant.

It's just shit talk like you would get/give if 2 friends were watching a game but supported different sides.

parks's picture

It's sorta reminiscent of the hostility for people who don't have our own sexual preferences. There's plenty of room for discussion concerning one aspect or another, but what's the anger about?

Feels like there's something threatening to some folks about it, but I can't imagine what.

Anyway, it's not a hill I'd particularly choose to die on or anything. Just strikes me as curious.

Parks I was reading your post below dude, and you need to understand something about the world we live in .

Its just that ! this is the world we live in, our world is wildly over populated with a plethora of humanitarian problems. And you want to point out the poor animals in the "horrible" slaughter houses, the people who run those places do the absolute best they can with the resources they have available, slaughtering livestock is a dirty business no doubt about it . Have you ever killed and butchered a deer? I have and its not the cleanest process in the world, now multiply that times a million and you have some idea what slaughter houses have to deal with.

We live in a physical reality and it gets bloody sometimes, its not always the most humane existence but like I said its the world we live in . If you can think of a better way to feed 7,000,000,000 people the meat they demand then by all means make a change.

You wanna see something inhumane ? Go spend a few nights in a county jail, or visit a state prison where the people are packed in 3 to a cell. Maybe go stick your head in the doors of a nursing home those places are real death houses, or stick your head in the sand and feel sorry for the animals this is a kill or be killed reality it may not be the one we chose but it is the one we were born into.
