+ 6 LAZY IN THE GYM

ad

Ok people I see a lot of this I get asked a lot of questions about this so I'm gonna make it real simple .. It doesn't matter if you pushing heavy weight or light weight , what does matter is the intensity of you set .. This is where people get lazy and the gains show it . See guys doing 8 reps and stop way to soon they was t even struggling with the last rep , I asked him why did you stop ( he replied I'm following this workout in this magazine) I laughed . Do I told him on the next set go till you struggle I mean really struggle with the last rep. He did 17 this time , i explained to him if your your gonna lift no matter what routine your following you HAVE TO PUT FULL EFFORT INTO IT. Don't be lazy make the last rep hurt. This apples to heavy weight or light weight . Don't short cut your workout..

knuckleswollen's picture

Well said GYM, otherwise what is the point and why are you there. Forget how much you are lifting focus on form and go until failure. Eat right, recover and grow.

Different application, similar idea:

I started physical therapy for my back recently, and being I had a major surgery, my beginning is just stretching and extremely light movements, with little resistance. So today Doc comes up to me as I'm stretching, and asks
"how many reps do you have left?"
so I tell him "I don't know, I'm not counting"
He seemed surprised, but just said "OK, let's just call it 5 left"
I said "no, I go til I feel it"
This led us to discuss this topic, as it applies to my therapy. I basically told him if I don't feel like it's doing anything, it's not doing anything for my recovery. I'm trying to make a recovery, not prolong being out of work and "milking" the workers comp system, like so many people do. He actually agreed with me, and said he just doesn't like to push people too hard because he feels like most people don't WANT that burn, or struggle. How else can you expect to recover while gaining strength if you don't push it, even if it's minimal!

my physcial therapists were sadistic ... you didn't get to go home until you were crying

awagz's picture

That's what I need. They "pussy foot" at my place, which I'm sure is largely due to the fact that they can milk workers comp forever on a back surgery, but I don't have time for that nonsense. I need to get back to work and a normal lifestyle before I lose my mind

Correct I agree have to give your all and 90% and that shit in magazines is just that it's shit and all sales tatic the other 10% is the Shit they push to sell, and you to can get shredded in just 15 days and use of 2 bottles of the new product shred max it has sold over 1 million bottles act now and get 1 bottle for 20.00 dollars but in the next 5 minutes you order get 2 bottles for 40.00 dollars. lmfao

Then you have lazy people setting on equipment talking to each other or on phone or some other stupid shit and I just about loose it.

Good post bro.

I love when someone comes into the gym, walks at a pace that wouldn't give my dead grandma trouble, and is staring down at their phone the whole time, then packs up and heads out after 30 minutes of "cardio"...

Yep I'm same I have nothing against people try to better them self BUT there is alot of older people at the gym I go to like upper 60 to low 70 that don't do shit nothing it is like they think it is hardees or something to just hang out that's it. I'm not being a dick I just don't understand the ideal behind it.

awagz's picture

LOL @ hardees haha. I can see it IF they are socializing at the same time, being many older folks don't get so much interaction, especially if their spouse has passed. It just drives me nuts when it's a slightly obese 40 something that's more worried about Facebook and Instagram then they are of even working. No point in my mind, and I don't see how they could possibly justify the cost of the membership at that rate!

zeb0312's picture

Yea correct but some of them have been there for years I have been at that gym on and off for 15 years and they look the same just older or worse. They stare at me and I know what they are thinking and I stare at them and they have no clue why I'm staring lol. They are cool guys and gals but I don't get it they don't talk to me just stare

awagz's picture

Makes you wonder how many of them will do this JUST to get away from their spouse or kids for a little bit lol

In my physiology classes we learned that intensity is, in most cases, the biggest factor determining what sort of training response an athlete will have.

It doesn't matter if you run, cycle, ski, lift... whatever it is you do, you can't get better at it if you don't push the boundaries. Your body likes homeostasis and habitual routine, so you have to overcome that and push for high intensity in order to change your body.

Dacky's picture

No point being in the gym if you're just going to throw a bit of weight around. Anyone can do that and I see it all the time. I agree it's all about intensity and that is true regardless of the weight used. Apply proper form and think about contracting the working muscles through the range of motion and you almost always will be working at a good and appropriate level of intensity. And then it's about ensuring the right number of reps are used, rest periods are timed and appropriate, use forced reps when needed, drop sets, partials, negative etc to get your intensity up. I never walk into the gym and left feeling like I haven't smashed it. We all have "off days" of course and when I have one I will still make sure my intensity is as high as it can possibly be for that given day. Great post and awesome to see the communities views!

TheFlash85's picture

ill be gritting my teeth, bright red with veins popping, if i feel like i need more intensity, i start thinking about all the bad things that have happened to me, all the people who doubt me, treat me like shit, the people who try put me down, i push those extra reps out and stay in gym longer, meanwhile those fucks are out on a saturday night getting drunk and taking drugs looking all scrawny, im using them as motivation.

That's the truth! Like what is stated...discarding a set number of reps, being acutely focused on finding the rep that challenges everything in your mind screaming,"Enough!" That's what your sets should be based on! Its no secret when you watch videos of the pros lifting. Pain is blatantly smeared all over their face! They have met with mental anguish, physical collapse, looked it dead in the eyes, and proceeded to push them aside. The mental barriers are the true hindrance! And initially it will put up a good fight. The guys you see that come to grips with sanity during lifting, are the ones that stay motionless in terms of any real gains. The ones that lift with shear insanity(the pros) they become locked in an asylum of muscle growth! The point is to overdo the shit out of your workout. However long it takes shoving weight till your bones ache...that is when you've completed a session...

SlowBro's picture

Intensity builds density. dont stop when its starts to hurt, that just means your getting started. your finished when you cant move it anymore. good post! people really underestimate the importance of intensity in the gym. alot of people also arnt aware of what real intensity is.

rageracing's picture

Lift to failure...plain and simple. Idgaf what the number on the stack says or how many plates are in the bar...FAILURE!! When i first started lifting i used to count my reps religiously. Dorian Yates changed all that for me. I dont care if i did 15 reps because its really only the last three that count. That skin splitting pump....the feeling of the muscle going to explode. ..the tears in your eyes.....you body wanting to quit but your mind and will telling your body to stfu. Thats what its all about for me

PIN_CUSHION's picture

Pressing down the whole stack baby!

hahah ... lol what a crazy monstaar?

Believe it or not that shit works it will throw your back right out of wack...... lol

Great stuff! Goes without saying you are one of the guys who MEAN it! Said it before, rest between a set because you could hardly execute the last rep on the previous set.

dietpepsi's picture

Agree with all of the above one funny thing is people not squating to depth they pile on weight and do it wrong then pile more weight on do a quarter rep and think they are badass when little do they know there are 145 pound women in competition who out squat them

SenseiMiagi's picture

WTF, so magazine bodybuilders didnt get that size from the workouts they post? Yeah right, next your gonna tell me they didnt get swol by taking the creatine and glutamine powders they pose with.

Some folks that have never physically competed for anything dont quite know how far they can push the body. I think a lot of what we call "muscle memory" is actually "mental memory". Knowing how far your muscles can and should go to achieve a look is important.

Good post. A good percentage of gym goers suffer from this disease....which isnt bad, but some's attitude of denial when you try and explain they are lazy Pansies puts me off of helping.

cd1's picture

Your so correct fella...
People have the mind set the 8 - 10 reps because a fucking mag or book tells them to and in fact that should only be a guide line to an absolute minium and of course don't push your self to complete failure on the very first exercise as this could mess up for your second exercise and so on....
Another thing I tend to notice is that people don't do drop sets anymore...drop sets on a last exercise is where you will get one of the best pumps I'm sure of it...
Everyone wanna be a body builder!
But no one wanna lift these heavy ass weights!

bolt781's picture

"as this could mess up for your second exercise and so on".... I'll gladly burn my body to shit performing one lift to complete exhaustion. If I'm jamming on one specific lift, pump outrageous, everything is clicking, I'll ride that bitch till the wheels fall off!

kodiakGRRL's picture

You mean if I follow the work outs posted in some maginzine they may not work for me because I am different ????

cd1's picture

OMG please don't tell me that 60 second abs won't work either?....lol
What those mags forget to say is....
If your fucking fat already then 60 second abs is just going to grow your 6 pack and in return probably make your stomach look larger....
We all have abs under the somewhere or we would be walking around with our heads in our laps.

I know .. And I will look like the guys in the magazines if I buy there supps

You forgot to mention one thing... Get the fuck up off the leg press if you're looking at videos on your phone in between sets.. Or how about you just stay home and play video games!!!!!!

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

You know bro........ back in the day that shit would never have happened, folks went to gyms to train their bollocks off..... only thing they had to look at was maybe a training log (little black book)... modern life says going to the gym is the "in thing" so the fuckrods bring along all their fkn modern day trash with them.

TRaining "apps"... WTF is all that pa-lava about?........ useless fkn junk.

BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS is all they need ... but guess what?..... fuckskins dont want to work that hard.

Catalyst's picture

I've got a tatty old hoodie full with "blood, swear and tears" on the back. Sums up my training.

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

That wont match the new tights........ LMAO!!

You said it perfectly!!! Lazy pricks lol

Sets and reps are nothing but a guideline. (Goal dependant i.e .. bulking or cutting)

Instinctive training is what separates the gym rat from the Champion.

People put down weights too easily. Largely because of a number.

bolt781's picture

Simply put...but deadly in terms of utilizing that mentality while lifting! Cha-Ching!

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

I in my numerous decades (lol) have found that a lazy tard in the gym is usually a really lazy tard in ALL aspects of life.

Catalyst's picture

100% true. Wherever I've trained it's always the folks that train like animals that look the part. Train lazy and it shows.

Your set ends when you absolutely can't lift it anymore, not when it starts to get tough.
