+ 1 No meal before workout

ad

When i hit my morning workout i am doing 45min- 1 hour weights then 30-45 min cardio... i also do cardio again in evening. I am trying to get shredded and i know its good to do cardio on empty stomach in the morning to burn fat..., is it ok that i am hitting my weights and cardio before my first meal. only thing i have is 24 ounce cup of coffee. then soon as i get home i have meal number 1 for the day.... My morning workouts are great, very strong , a lot of energy, great pumps....what are your thoughts on this, as far as working out on empty stomach?

I'm in the same boat as you bro. I wake up crazy early because it's the only time I can get my workout in. I lift first then hit Cardio for 25 minutes. With a few minutes cool down mode. I use to do Cardio first but my lifts suffered. I do it all on an empty stomach also.

It's not ideal but I decided I want to shed fat I spent years accumulating becausr of laziness. Not something I would do off cycle though. I would follow why not advice. Cardio then a shake then weights.

I wish I could do it that way too, unfortunately I have just enough time to get my workout in, go home , shower, eat, then get to work.

There have been a lot of very good points made below. Here's my two cents. Keep in mind there are basically two states that you can be in one is anabolic the other is catabolic. There are no in between states. Think of it as an on and off switch. When you wake up in the morning you are extremely catabolic the longer it takes you to get protein into you the longer you stay catabolic.

Now doing cardio on an empty stomach is definitely beneficial in my opinion and is worth the trade-off. But I also think you are doing too much cardio and don't need more than 25 minutes. What I would do if I were you is to do the cardio and then immediately after get some fast acting protein like hydro whey and then hit the weights.

It's not a perfect solution but it's the best of your situation in my opinion.

eastcoastmuscle's picture

If I was to do cardio first , then drink a shake right after and go right Into weights, does your body come right out of a catabolic state as soon as you ingest the protein ?

WhyNot's picture

Protein is known to get you out of the Catabolic state in the morning. That is one of the reasons why if you are not trying to lose weight you should be getting protein into your system as quickly as possible. Hydro whey is probably one of your best options.

I may give it a try and make the switch to cardio first then lifting. I just don't like to lift after getting drenched in sweat and I usually lift first so I can put all my energy and strength into it, I might try to switch it and see how it works and drink a protein shake before lifting ...

You can try doing cardio outside of the gym like walking. then by the time you get to the gym ( I'm assuming at least 20 minutes was gone by) you'll be good to go. Just a suggestion I don't know your lifestyle.

This is what I would do bro, If you have the time, split your workouts. Fasting cardio on an empty stomach in the am and then heavy weights later on in the day(after meals, shakes& carbs).

Or if you dont have time, I would do fasting cardio FIRST in the am, then down a protien shake and commence your heavy weight lifting. Thats just my opinion, because I could never workout and cardio both, on an empty stomach.

I couldnt do the am fasting cardio, I dont have enough time in my day. If I was able this is how I would do it though. Props to you brother!

My problem is that I hate lifting in a crowded gym after work at night . I also don't feel like my workout is as strong at night after working all day long. I guess it comes down to what's better for trying to shred up , lifting and cardio on empty stomach vs having a shake or meal at 4am pre work out before I get there at 5am. I think next week I'm going to try whey protein shake pre workout and see if it makes a difference in my strength and energy levels. I'm adding casein shake at night , starting tonight , just not sure if I should replace my last meal with it or add it to my daily intake

WINNING's picture

Ok go in the am and do fasted cardio and as soon as your done drink a protien shake, then kill the weights.
As far as casein at night, eat your meal. A majority of your protien should come from FOOD. Eat a salad with chicken or some cottage cheese ect. Then just before you lay your head on that pillow, slam a casein protien shake. Imo
In essence, eat both, just balance out the last meal so it's less carbs and fats ect.
Hope this helps brother! Smile

eastcoastmuscle's picture

Not to get off topic but if I want to add a casein shake to the end of my day , should I replace my last meal with it or have it after my last meal which is at 6pm? Keep in mind I'm trying to shred

Banana cream by optimum nutrition... Yummy.

Dont replace a meal. The side effect I get from casein is I need to piss in the middle of the might a little longer since I chug water right before. Takes me forever to fall back asleep. Lol

mwagner630's picture

dont replace a meal with it, do it right before you go to sleep, it helps keep the metabolism going all night and gives the muscles some added nutrition.

Fasting cardio is great for fat burning, but fasting cardio and fasting lifting. I'd be dead! LOL.. When I do fasting cardio I drink some bcaas. You'll still get the benefit of fasting, but at least you'll have those amino's floating around for your muscles. Just a thought.

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

I'd be dead! LOL.

thats how "stage ready" feels bro.

oldhead73's picture

I honestly think I'd faint... LOL!! I have no problem doing fasting cardio, but If tried to lift heavy right after, damn I don't know! That's no joke!

eastcoastmuscle's picture

That's why I do my lifting first , so I can use everything I have as far as strength and energy, then I hit the cardio. I feel great doing it this way, I'm in gym about hour and half between lifting and cardio and never have any issues and I feel stronger then doing it at night.

oldhead73's picture

That might be more tolerable! I read that wrong.. I thought you were fasting cardio first then lifting. I was thinking damn I'd die.. lol

mwagner630's picture

i should clarify, what me and mwagsgurly do is called intermittent fasting and it works great for us..

here is a video on it,
http://bpisports.net/bpi-tv/no-excuses/intermittent-fasting#video-76453368

just something simple, hope it helps

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

thats called fasted cardio bro and there is nothing wrong with that at all!.... but you must ensue your protein grammage is calculated to the actual fkn gram daily or you WILL drop hard earned muscle mass.

eastcoastmuscle's picture

but its ok to hit the weights and cardio together like that and wait till i get home for meal number one?

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

on a serious cutter yes thats fine bro...... but the heightened metabolic rate created by fasted cardio must be then supercharged by blasting the body with proteins and BCAAs.... same theory works late at night with blasting your system with casein.... metabolic rate is high all night so in effect you have turned your sleeping body into a fat burning furness.

Darktide's picture

I have done this for years and never lost muscle but like Viking said your protein grams have to be dialed in or you will lose muscle. I will say that I never counted my grams in the past but I ate more than what was required later when I measured them.

me and mwagsgurly do our cardio in the morning before we eat. all we have is a cup of orange juice and our aminos and we do about 45 mins to hour of cardio. than come home have breakfast. than eat our other afternoon meals and go back into the gym around 4pm and lift weights and do cardio again. we have a very strict diet and schedule when we are cutting. even our meals are planned at certain times. i dont think i would do weights and cardio with out food, burning more than its worth imo. we also dont eat after 6pm when we are doing our cutting routine and cardio diet. maybe someone else can chime in with more diet experience. this works for me, doesnt mean it will work for others.

eastcoastmuscle's picture

i am eating 6 meals a day, have the diet pretty tight right now with the help of a few members on here, i just cant seem to get a good workout later in the day after work , thats usually why i just do cardio at night. im just not sure if i hit that first meal before the gym, if it will workout better as far as burning fat. i guess i could try it for a week and see if i feel a difference in my workouts, running test p, mast p, tren ace and my body comp is starting to change really fast doing it this way, its been a month and i am seeing some really good gains and fat loss.
