iPhone users, are you taking precautions?

ad

I have had every generation of iPhone since they came out. They have really become incredibly useful tools to make day to day life easier. But we tend to rely on them for everything ,including doing our online shopping (hhuuuhhhh hhhhheeeemmm) for all kinds of ,....stuff! At any rate, is this really safe? I mean look at Android users. They have the freedom and applications to set up efficient security. Or at least have the ability to customize and download software to take these extra security measures. With apple, we don't unless we jailbreak our phones to run a different OS and abandoning our iOS with all of its protection. Apple has a strangle hold on its users. While they do a great job of keeping our devices from getting sick (viruses), they also prevent us from doing A LOT of things that Android users do without effort or corner cutting. So unless you purchase a VPN or try to hook up with the VPN you have at home on your PC, you are pretty much wide open for exposure to prying eyes. We all know that because of the new generation of fear, the population has not objected when the govt told us they were going to start digging through our shit (phone calls, emails, texts etc). They are willing to sacrifice privacy for security. Well I don't like it. I am guilty of being too lax in the past. I am trying to right the ship now. So while chatting with someone from here we investigated safety/security options. What we came up with is basically TOR set up to run on iOS as well as TOR for texting. This is just an IP hiding program but also encrypts text. I don't know how fool proof it is, but it's a whole lot better than the alternative (NOTHING). So check these out if you use your phones to surf source websites or text things that you may not want someone else seeing. You carrier company has all that shit stored (i'm not sure for how long but it is there) and with a warrant, it will be used against you in a court of law. Go to the APP store and type "Covert browser" & "iTORChat" in the search bar. One at a time obviously (my apologies for the overwhelming need/desire to explain everything as if i'm talking to children. I dumb it down at work out of necessity and have gotten used to doing it all the time after 10 years working with the kinds of ppl I do.)
Both are extremely simple to use and most of you are already familiar with tor so you'll get the gist. Also, they cost money but it's literally peanuts. The browser is $2.99 and the text chat is $1.99. I think that's pretty friggen cheap considering it's your freedom we are talking about. But another thing I thought of after some dumb fuck I know used a credit card to purchase the apps. Go to any super market or pharmacy and buy an iTunes card. DON'T BE STUPID AND USE A CREDIT CARD WITH YOUR NAME ON IT ALONG WITH EVERYTHING ELSE TIED TO YOU. Prepaid gift cards guys. Easy as pie. Those of you who actually do this ,please come back to this thread and post up your thoughts. Or maybe you have an alternative option/app. Let us know. We are all in this together.

you can use wickr and whats app for chatting as well.. wickr is by far more secure than whats app

Nitti's picture

You should check out the ones I mention

kodiakGRRL's picture

wickr has military grade encryption and destroys the messages after they are read .. I have tor on my phone already but I don't use my phone for any business at all.. ever ... not even to check off server mail.. surespot is another program and is even better than wickr but it is only for androids

As bad as Iphones supposedly are do you know Imessage was/is the only encrypted text messages that the DEA and other federal agencies couldn't crack. And Apple wasn't giving in the last I heard. This encryption only works between Iphone users if I recall correctly. To say that Android phones are any safer is far from truth. At least not for the average user they aren't.

Thanks Nitti for doing the research on this I will give it a look. Truth be told tho I think once you land on the feds radar it is only a matter of time. No matter what counter measures you put up, I think it is safe to say they already have a patch.

I just read the article. I want to research this more and find sources I trust completely but this is fucking AWESOME!

Pale's picture

Like you I hope it is true. I wish I could say I had nothing else to worry about and in my state I don't. But federal law is out of touch with the states...

Once you land on the feds radar its only a matter of time

Exactly, and I don't know about you but the only crime i'm committing these days is parking illegally and ordering a little gear for personal use so I shouldn't be on their radar. I want it to stay that way

Nitti's picture

That's pretty funny. About 90% of my texts are iMessages with other iPhone users. Good to hear.

Onion browser is the one i'm talking about. It is just more elaborate or laid out more appropriately. Formatted to fit and match perfectly with iOS. Look at the one I mentioned in the app store. Check out the overview and see if it looks like the onion browser. It's identical to the way Tor (onion) looks on your PC

OK ok, I get it! Apple products are the wrong choice for ppl with secrets. That is obvious. It's NOT what i'm asking. I already know that it's best to get a droid. But ATM, I have this. And so do others here. Some ppl are struggling to make ends meet let alone think about getting a new phone. So the point of the post is about using Tor for the damn phones browser. Is there anyone who's used it yet and what do you think? It is clearly safer to use it than not. Keeps you a little more under the radar than someone who isn't using it right?

What about Jailbreaking? Anyone jailbroken their iPhone to use new safety programs or IP blockers?

Fuck the NSA. If they are going to monitor a bunch of juiceheads then they will have to sort all the other bullshit petty crime that exists in the world which are millions and millions of citizens. But I'm an android user and I too have been very lax in phone convos and internet purchases but if I can't fucking talk about anything than this truly isn't a free country. This shit has to end.

Best thing to do is not buy an apple product next time.. not only do you have all of these security issues to begin with but you're being seriously ripped off.. wasn't there a member on here who had all of his gear picts and picts of naked women uploaded to a family folder for all of his family to see because he was using an apple phone? or was it some google app.. they're both awful about that lmao

Nitti's picture

Yes, Apples so proud of their iCloud! But it causes so many problems. Most families start out with one iTunes account that is shared. I have 2 kids who have iPods and at the time my ex also had an iPhone on the same account. Wow what a fuckin mess that was. I got a new phone along with one of the updates and before I get a chance to play with the settings my son comes and shows me his iPod blowing up with texts. I look and realize they're texts to me from MY CONTACTS. I go check out the ex's phone and sure enough, shes receiving all my texts and vice versa. Yeah, that didn't go so well. I had to confiscate everyones device and keep them in my pockets until I figured out how to fix this shit. If I set up new accounts for everyone they would lose all the apps and music they purchased which at this point is upwards of $1K after 5 years. So that iCloud shit with app, music and picture sharing. Contacts and photos being streamed to the other devices. Texts , videos, my son even managed to receive facetime calls from ppl that were meant for me. Just all kinds of fucked up. But I have since mastered a way around all this shit and apple still offers the ability to use a VPN and while in reality the NSA can access whatever the fuck they want, at least this shit stays a little further off the radar than ppl who don't use it

OmNom's picture

Oh wow thats awful.. Well I think most of my friends here jail break their iphones.. they make it sound very easy.. def could be something worth looking at.

Nitti's picture

And obviously i'm aware this is not fool proof, but it is an extra precaution is it not? It's the same as using TOR on your PC. I don't know why i'm replying to you with this comment. It was meant to go above you. By the way, I don't like your face.

Dont buy an IPhone :-) Its amongst the easiest to track everything you do

Nitti's picture

Well I kinda can't do anything about that at this point. So what do you think about the browser itself? Without slinging shit or getting into the old "Android vs iPhone" battle. You know that iPhones re easily trackable so what else do you know? Anything about the apps I listed? Anything helpful for those who already committed to a contract with their new $600 phone?

rsp2000's picture

Quiet honestly?....only access stuff you want private from a specific machine which has been configured for privacy.

In terms of the App - anything sitting on a IPhone will report, or rather has the capability, to report and log to Apple. The App itself is solid as it does what it says on the tin. But whether Iphone logs anything...well......
