Blood Pressure and Doctor concern

ad

My BP is typically hovering around 138/78 on and off cycle. On cycle it has gone a bit higher but no crazy increase unless I get really fired up.

My family history is jam packed with high blood pressure. My mother had a bi-pass at a young age. My grandfather (her father) had multiple ones. My dad has been very healthy. To this point in my life, it seems my sister has my mothers genetic make-up and I have my fathers. However, the one thing I know and am always concerned with is my BP. My doc thinks it's normal, I personally think it's borderline too high for a daily number. I've dieted, I do plenty of cardio. I just can't get it lower. In my 20's, I was on medication. I smoked, I drank a lot, I was out of shape. I changed all that, I made the personal choice to stop taking the meds and I did ok for a while..

I'll be 38 next month, I believe everything I do keeps it at the level it's at now, but nothing I have done or can do will get it down lower. In any case, my doctor says it's normal and looks good. He doesn't want to put me on medication, doesn't feel I need it.

I'm the type that would rather prevent, rather than treat. If I know something is borderline, I'd rather nip it now, rather than when it becomes a problem. should I just tell my doc to give me something, end of story or is he right in saying that number is not a concern?

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try some tumeric for a while and if nothing changes I'm just going to tell my doc what I want. Hopefully the tumeric works!

You are probably right about that in my case too! lol

Bro, you gotta taper off those anxiety meds. Slowly. Then throw them in the trash. You don't need them and they do not help in the long run. If you want to discuss it please pm me. I have dealt with social anxiety for years and am close to breaking free.

I did because I read that a long time ago from you. LOL. I've tried it, hasn't really helped much. I was using tabs though. Is the liquid better?

Brother try some tumeric and I'd also recommend a few more things. To start I would increase my water and also increase my potassium intake! It'd be better to get potassium through your diet because potassium supplements here in the US are only like 90mgs per pill while the RDA is 4500mgs so you'd have to take several pills to do much good. While you're increasing your potassium decrease your sodium and be mindful of sodium content in things you eat and drink.

Here's a quick write up on potassium. Good luck bro..

Just keep an eye on it- checking a few times a year for changes. No theres nothing you can do except obvious lifestyle choice things like you mentioned- ie not smoking, not being fat, excercise, limiting stress, adequate sleep. etc.

I keep an eye on it frequently. To me that number is a bit high and running that high for so long can eventually catch up to you.
I'm asking if u should ask my doc for medication instead of staying borderline for years.

Some will call this elevation "prehypertension" which is vaguely defined as higher readings that are not at the cut off used to diagnose hypertension. Here is a link about it, but again most doctors will not pay attention to this until your numbers are higher, and only lifestyle factors are what you can modify. No there is no basis to treat or try to lower your values as they currently are.

Brother, heart disease follows the males on my family tree like the grim reaper, so I know where your coming from. I just turned 40. When I started this cycle my BP jumped up almost to the redline, but like Viking, Tread and others recommended I have been taking Tumeric and doing 20 minutes of intense cardio ED pre-workout. It seems to be paying off. The last two times I stopped back by my Dr's office for my BP check all has been well.

Turmeric huh? I've never tried it, never even heard it was good for BP. What is the recommended dose?

I use Tumeric by New Chapter...they make prob some of the best supplements on the market as you prob know quality of supplements is very important....i have low blood pressure so i need to drink salted water....so you should drink plenty of water and watch for hidden sodium....try to cook all you meals yourself, also if yr gonna use salt at all you should use celtic sea salt...its way different than table salt....

I have been taking one pill a day, the pro's may have a different dosage recommendation. I also just picked up some CQ10 and will be adding that to the mix. How much cardio are you doing NP?

NoPain's picture

I do at least 20 minutes of higher intensity. Sometimes 30 to 40 at lower intensity.. Basically I switch it up alot. What mg is the turmeric? I'll do some research later too. Thanks bro.
