I saw this homeless man today and i gave him a dollar. then this guy came up to me saying "dont give this lazy bastard shit, he ll just use it on drug... do u know how much money of our taxes goes to these lazy bastard...etc"
Man why dont people realize that being homeless simply sucks.. I feel bad for those people and my gut hurts everytime i see one... so i volunteer w/ community programs to feed them..

AnonI don't give out money but I do volunteer or do charity work by my onsies.
I usually go around and talk to the homeless people in the area to learn their stories. I'll buy some food and go hang out and eat with them then listen to their life stories. I don't like pan handlers that approach people with BS stories, that will set me off.
Helping kids is my favorite thing to do, I try to keep myself anonymous because of the nature of where my money comes from, I don't want a big picture and a plaque on the wall with my name. I'll find out what a place needs and I'll donate it or I'll bring in bags of toys and games. I try not to stay too long because it's painful to watch these kids. I know if I hung out long enough I'd start parting out my organs.
Lastly I used to run a NPO that was all about making people happy. Doing random acts of kindness around town. I closed those doors when work here became too hectic, again the downside to being in this business is staying out of the limelight and I already had my face in the paper a few times.
When it comes down to it, I don't care what people say. Being selfless is still a selfish act. I help people because I feel it's the right thing to do but at the same time, I do it because it makes me feel good about myself. It's also why I will never be rich and why allot of rich people make me sick to my stomach. Anyone who spends 15k on a pair of shoes should be shot, with 15k I could go to Africa and feed a hundred families for a year (and make them fat at that). I wish I had the money to open my own full time Charity to help people who are really in need.

You know what, Karma is real. I dont agree with giving out money but I will never deny a hungry man food. Literally I have let homeless people in my car and drove them to McD's or somewhere and fed them. I wont give money. My gym is actually very close to a homeless shelter and I get people all the time looking and asking and if they smell like liquor they get a lecture. Nigga feed yourself before you buy liquor, and if you cany get that logic straight I cant do nothing for you. But if they are hungry I dont have a problem on dollar menu. I have lived life and have been at the bottom so I can share some real shi* with people if they are willing to listen, but to sympathize?? to many factors to consider to givean answer. If yiou are an able body and choose to live like that I have less sympathy than I would if you were old and down on luck.
AnonBeing homeless is obviously a mental illness, and Im not saying I give money to all of them, but the day I cant spare a dollar or two to someone like that is a sad day indeed. Sometimes though instead of money I will buy them a slice of pizza or a burger. One guy asked me for a dollar and I told him to wait right there. I went in to a restauraunt and got him a dish of spaghetti and meatballs, he was so happy.
To all the people who say dont help, let me ask what is the cost of not helping ? No one ever thinks of the harm that would come to society as a whole if we do not help those in need.

My father was released from prison in 1991 and obtained custody of me and my brother from the state, when we became foster kids cause our grandmother had passed away and no family wanted to take us. My father struggeld to get a job in the early 1990s cause of his felony conviction. We were homeless for quite some time, because its seems like the government doesn't recognize the idea that a man can be a single father raising kids (we were turned away from numerous shelters cause they were for women and children). They actually wanted my dad to leave us so he could sleep in the park, while we stayed at the shelter. My dad is a hard working man who busted his ass to put a roof over our heads. My brother is now a nurse, and I'm a correctional officer and getting my degree to become a personal trainer and my dad eventually went to college and obtained a BA. Noviceaas me and you have conversed over PM so this is not a shot at you and I apologize if it comes off like that. But we all cannot judge people from personal appearances we don't know anyone's backstory.
AnonNo Im very sorry to have made that remark which offended you. I only meant that out of sympathy, not as any insult. I think its sad that so many people are living on the streets , and whether people see them pan handling or not the fact is they've got no home to go to so how can anyone begrudge them a little charity ?

That was a good read my friend. Seriously puts it into perspective of how well I had it as a kid. Mom and dad were both there, we never had to go through any of the bs you had to go through. Just made me count my blessings brother. :-)

AnonSorry to hear about your brother and I hope he finds/gets the help before its too late. But I agree Yoked I'll never understand that sort of situation. My roommates' mom owns her own business and his dad is an engineer for the power company and he's a stone cold drop down drunk alocholic. When he's late on rent, he calls mom, no food, calls mom, no soap, calls mom. I honestly believe life is all about choice.
Bro thats sad because I have seen it a million times. I have two sisters like that. Not drunks but always on moms tit. BUT.Its because they enable them. He doesnt have to change because they have it to give and he knows it. so he just takes advantage of whats there.

i used to think all the homeless were lazy junkies, then one day i was downtown, someone asked me for som change, i took a look at the person and it was someone i went through school with and he was not a junky..., felt sick to my stomach, im not so quick to jump to conclusions anymore.

You just have to go with your gut some times. I was in line for a Phish concert last year and saw this woman holding a sign and a baby needing money. I gave her like five bucks. Probably the cost of half a beer inside the venue. No big deal. At intermission, I coincidently ran into that woman inside the building. Not only was she there to see the show, but she was also trashed and partying her ass off. That was pathetic in my opinion. My question was who's kid did she have and where did it go once the show started?
I generally avoid the homeless. Mainly just out of my own safety. I was at a convenience store with some friends and this bum wanders in asking for money. I asked him what wanted it for and he said food. I'm like, alright pick out what you want and I'll buy it for you since we were in a store. He started to get irate and told me to just give him the money for it and he would buy it himself. I had to put his ass in check and told him to get the fuck out of the store or I'd beat the piss out of him. It's stories like these that generally make me angry because didn't I do the right thing by offering him something to eat?

its a good hustle. they mad a lot of money. i spent quite a lot of time running around the NYC afterhours club scene. always homeless guys hanging outside by the smoking section. they know there a bunch of high, happy, cashed up people around. good move cause they always got payed there. i remember one time i guy asks me for a dollar. i tell him sorry bro i only got hundreds on me. in return i hear, no problem, i got change....
but theyre some solid people out there too. one guy spider. ive know him for years. always used to be at this one club i used to run. we always used to break him off. one day my bro lost his wallet. fucking spider gave him a 50. the homeless brah held him down that night.
GearofWarEveryone always assumes that panhandlers are junkies. Sometimes things in life happen that are beyond our control. There are innumerable scenarios(injury, loss of healthcare, loss of employment, mounting bills, no job skills making you unmarketable, and the list goes on..) Things that, believe it or not, aren't related to substance abuse. I was a junky once, but I was never homeless. Came close but my pride wouldn't allow it. I do think that you've got to dig deep, pull up your boot straps and take care of business when shit gets hairy. I will usually throw some spare change to dudes if I have it. In the city the they're installing "homeless meters", go figure. It's exactly what it sounds like. I used to do volunteer work for Rotary Int'l Community Corps when I was younger before drugs ruined me. I am a firm believer that we should be spending money on our homeless and stop worrying about other countries. Fuck foreign aid policy. Let's fix our own house before we fix the house next door. You feel me? I get heated when I hear how much money we spend on aid to foreign countries when there are so many brothers and sisters in desperate need right here in the greatest nation in the world.
I like to help disabled combat veterans, since they have issues similar to me. Support groups are the best place to talk out issues and make sense of all the stuff going on in your like. It helps to speak with like minded people.

Every one of them made that choice? I didn't know that. Damn we've got an expert in here. I'm sure at least one homeless person in this world ended up there by unfortunate circumstances beyond their control. I could be wrong though.

About 75% of homeless suffer from mental illness and the fact that mental health facilities are few and far leaves them with lil options. I use to think the same thing till I had to do court ordered community service and learned all that.

well it depends on the homeless i feel the same as you. but if i see one at the gas station asking for money and has a pack of cigs i dont give them anything.
