Is 6 hours of sleep sufficient?
ad
Fellow Athletes,
I'm almost 30 and in elite athlete condition (basketball player). I was wondering, is 6 hours of sleep per night enough to recover fully from heavy training? Reason I ask is because I feel rested when I wake up, but I'm afraid I'm going to lose my athleticism faster as I age. Due to my training schedule, family time, etc. this seems to be all that I can manage to squeeze out.
All suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

It all depends on the "quality" of sleep you get...if it's not a very deep sleep and you're tossing and turning, then you need more hours. If you tend to fall asleep in 30min and sleep hard and heavy except for maybe getting up at some point to take a piss, then you're good to go.
I know I get around 7 hours/night..and I'm in my early 30's, I might be a lil' groggy for 5 minutes upon wake-up(but who isn't!!), and then I perk up feeling like I wanna kick some ass...that's how I know I am rested.
what about for a 24-25 year old? also could anybody e plain why I can get less hours, 6 for example n have energy but if I do for long will catch a lil sickness but if I get 9 I feel healthy but more sluggish
Thanks guys! All the knowledge on here is awesome. I plan on utilizing all you guys as resources to become a better athlete and live a higher quality of life. Keep it coming
Anon6-9 hours its all gona relly on you and your body if you feel refreshed and good to go and your growing and etc then fuck it its good
for me 7hours is the majic number. Some nights I get 8-9 though. I used to get 4-6 every night for years so 7 hours is a world of difference for me.
When i am training 6-7 hours is great for me and i find it easy to sleep and grow and feel great all day.since i have got a injury and i am out of training i am sleeping like snorlax easy 10-12 hours haha propa fukt up allways feel tired aswell even tho i am doing nothing.
They say you need 8 to 10 hrs of sleep to grow, I been averaging about 6hrs for years and I seem to grow just fine.
It feels like you need less sleep the older you get from my experiences.. Go with what your body is telling you! If you feel really tired then your body is saying "IM NOT DONE HEALING YOU A**HOLE!!!" If you're not tired and wide awake I'd imagine your fine.. No point in struggling to go back to sleep either
thats a good point, you have to pay attention to your body. my work schedule just changed to earlier in the morning and i had to go to a 4day on 1 day off instead of the 6 on 1 off that i was on
Most adults i know in their 30s+ function fine from 6 hours.. I remember growing up i practically needed 12 and now 6 is about right for me.. 8 sometimes
Yeah, when I was a kid I spent more hours asleep than awake. Lol! The good old days
if you go to sleep at 10, then yes. Otherwise you need 8-10 hours
