My damned lungs are killing me.

ad

So I quit smoking butts, again, in February or March. Haven't touched one since. I took the physical abilities test for the fire dept in July. The testers asked me if I had asthma. Before that point I hadn't concentrated much on cardio, mainly strength building. The test was a lot more endurance based than I had thought. Now if a dept decides to hire me, then before I go to the academy I need to pass the test again. I did pass all 7 events, but barely. The initial test only needs to be passed with 3/7, the hiring test needs 7/7. So I'm trying to work on cardio more and get my breathing under control. I've never had so much trouble trying to run. Best time so far is an 8 minute mile, but at one mile my lungs hurt so badly I had to walk. I know it helps so after I catch my breath, I sprint between telephone poles until I'm close to being back home. When I was 19 my best time was 13:33 2 miles, and I was smoking a pack and a half a day, along with at least a 12 pack of Buds. Now when I get home after a run, I have a headache and a cough. I thought I was done coughing shit up months ago.
I really hope I never pick up another smoke. I almost had a cigar a couple weekends ago, but I know that's nicotine and I'd wake up the next day wanting to smoke. I liked to dip too, but I'd get so dehydrated from spitting. A dream job is my current motivation to not do it. Other than just keeping up cardio and doing basic breathing exercises, any advice on improving lung function?

swimming will help build up your lungs as well... and it doesn't involve injesting any chemicals

I HAVE asthma, swimming strengthens and works the lungs. It increases lung capacity depending on what you do and how hard you work yourself. It was one of the best things I could have ever done for myself, not to mention it reduces stress on the joints.

If you have the drive, you can really get some good training done in the pool, most people don't realize you can sweat swimming.

SALBUTAMOL IN THE UK...ALBUTAMOL IN USA.... do a web search on this product, less sides and far safer than clen ... when folks get wise to this stuff clen will be the second choice imo.

P.S. far more anabolic than clen also..so thats a bonus!

I just did a little digging, I'm assuming you are referring to the inhalant and not pill form. I couldn't find any reason that the tabs or liquid would improve lung function.

One more thing once you quit dont start up again because you will get cancer twice as fast as if you had not quit if that makes sence.
This is why peter jennings died so fast

This is the fifth time I've quit, so I guess I'm 5x more likely. I quit on my 21 birthday, for 18 months.

Im talking years, it takes 5 to 10 years for your lungs to heal 100%. Thats when its really bad to start up again, its bad to start back up at any time.

this is something new for me, thanks for posting this. 95% of smokers dont know this.

Something that may help with the healing of your lungs would be nebulizer treatments. You can get a prescription from your doctor it is very useful in the healing of asthma and opening the lungs. I know that doctors are using this to help former smokers recovery the use of their lungs.

Even with the cardio I do during the winter before the beginning of mountain bike season my lungs burn and I get the worst headache after the first ride. By the third ride I am blasting through the trails.

Just keep up the cardio and breathing exercises and your lungs will be there to ace the hiring test.

Well let me start off by saying this is one of the smartest decision you have made and we are very proud of you. Most of my family members are pack a day smokers and none of them are healthy. I was a smoker too until I thought I was getting cancer, I was at a pack a day for five years and was getting really bad lung pains so I quit. I noticed that my lung capacity increased within a month if not weeks and pain stopped, I was also hacking up a lot of tar for the first few weeks and would say my lungs healed 75% in the first 6 months. Everything about the lung heals except the air sacks, the cilia starts to repair 72 hours after your last cig. Cigs paralyze the cilia and increase mucous and with paralyzed cilia comes smokers cough and copd and all that good stuff.
tobacco today is not what it was 100 years ago, it was bad back then and its 100x worse today. you dont need it bro you will live better without it. keep your head strait and dont slip, not even one hit because it will lead to the second and third.
Also had an uncle that dipped and he had to get half his face removed, the only cool part about that was he could drink a beer through his eye socket, he past a few years after. How is that shit legal, it kill people.

Braxbrah's picture

Yes it does, the good news when you quitting smoking though is the cells in your lungs start to repair 24 hours after the last smoke intake, the healing process might take a while but it starts soon after.
