+ 1 Do Opiates lower testosterone levels?

So I was at my Urologist appointent awaiting a visectomy in the operating room and started to read a poster about low test symptoms. It was about a 45 minute wait with my balls under a heat pad, so I had some time to ponder. Doctor comes in, sits down and explains what is going to happen next. Two painful shots in the groin and two incissions into it, I begin to ask questions about low T and how I show 2 of the 7 posted. Really cool cat, he just starts chatting back and forth with me, while working and finishes. After the surgery, he meets me in the hallway, shakes my hand and says he ordered me a full T level count and to go as soon as I get a chance. I was really concerned on my T levels being low because after I hit 30, I lost sight of my abs and have super low energy and motivation. Now, this doctor ordered a count for me after prescribing me 24 pills of Vicodin. 3 days and 24 Vicodin pills later I went in around 9am for the blood draw. I am up in the air on whether or not my T count will come in abnormally low. Has anyone ever experienced any situation similar to this? What should I expect upon my next visit?

UPDATE: Total Testosterone count was 2.00ng/mL (1.75-7.81ng/mL is average). Urologist prescribed me TRT 200mg/ml Watson Pharmaceutical Test C. Only took the 24 pills of Vicodin and nothing more.

LMFAO!!!! Sooooo.....8 pills a day for three days.....good times!
Sorry....but that is quite a handful of opiates....I bet you crashed after

smallfry's picture

Surprisingly I did not crash. The 8 pills a day did hide the awesome pain in my gut. I've only taken pills twice in my life and this being one of them. I started this forum in question on whether opiates affected T levels. In my situation it was on short term. Regardless of long or short, Opiates are bad, lol. They are bandaides for the time being. A friend of mine had a hernia surgurey and was prescribed Vicodin. He refused to take them. His thought process was if he didn't know what hurt in his recovery then it wouldn't be 100% due to the masking. If you ever go in for a Visectomy I highly recommend trying NOT to take the pain meds afterwards, LOL! Take care.

I am currently dosing of mmt(methadone maintenance) and from the info I have gathered is that opiates affect the thryoid and the way your body absorbs nutrients which are building blocks for the rest of the bodies functions hence it effecting testosterone production. One of the main reasons I wanted to get off of methadone. Good luck!

I used to be a heavy opiate abuser, I had my test levels taken while I was in that mess. I was 23 and my levels were around 230-250.

gRxnch's picture

Bro, that's the same boat I was in. Recovering heroin addict, 2 years in october. Had blood drawn in 2011 to check my levels and it came back all in the 200's range. Opiates kill your everything production and drive, not just test.

Deuce9's picture

well my levels came back to normal like 4 months after I quit heroin. I noticed my test levels coming back after a week of quitting. I felt like fucking any women that walked by me. At the time, I hadnt felt like that in years. Its a damn good feeling to be horny again lol.

What a trip thanks bro. This is somthing I have worry about Dr. Has been giving me pain pills since 98 at first then were fine as I got older I noticed changes unwanted changes.z

joker's picture

No it's good to know. I noticed my test levels gradually dropped after years of tasting pain meds.

joker's picture

You know what I have had this post on my mind since I read it. And have been paying close attention to my cycle and I have to say yes there is somthing odd. My Norcos are no were near as strong while on cycle, I wonder if the high amounts of test and other gear we use feels the receptors these opiates normally fill. I have to take twicebas much Norco in order to notice their working but yet I also don't have to take as many while on cycle. Very interesting question I should look deeper into it. Because every cycle I take less pain meds then off cycles. I wonder if anyone else notices this?

Cap'nCrunch's picture

I have had a back injury since '98 that I have had treated off and on for years. I refuse the pain management/norco route because it would end my career. However I have noticed one thing in that time. When I'm on the juice, I'm not in pain. Noticed my first cycle over ten years ago. Confirmed after a few doctor prescribed steroid treatments. Now when I can't take it anymore, I go on a low dose cruise. Which is one of the reasons I'm here.

joker's picture

My injury's are way beyond simple. Lets just say im known as the bionic man. Pain meds are just enough to take the edge off. Is this something I like? Fuck no!! I see and hear people complain all the time about their injury's and I listen and I have some sense of compassion. But dude I have metal holding me together from head to toe I "laughed" when I blew apart my knee into thousands of pieces. I had a complete rebuild meaning cadaver and bone cement with metal cage. This on top the full ankle repair fractured hip, pelvis shattered shoulder this one was weird because i still went to work and I dont have a "desk" job either. Anyways my entire arm and flank filled up with bone marrow due to 5 fractures in humerus clavical and collar. Then I figured I should probably take some time off. I have had 8 broken ribs 12 cervical spine surgeries 5 of those being majors. So I guess were im going with this is there was a time i never needed pain meds I just bounced back up. But when I cannot function with out pain putting me to bed and the only resource I have is a fucking narcotic.
like Norco to alleviate the pain just enough to allow me to move around and go about my daily life then guess what? Thats what Im taking.
I had an entire disc protruding on my spinal cord and I still worked 12-16 hour days for a month it wasnt till I was passing out that I figured something was serious.
This something the Dr. already knew but failed to tell me after my MRI's. Yea if you get nailed for taking any of my meds while on a job with out the prescript then yes it will end a career. No employer I have ever been with has ever questioned my meds. Even when we have random test done or just pretest I always come up clean but still have my prscript with me.
If you ever had to sit in my shoes you might have a better understanding as to were im coming from. Juice has helped as I have gotten older but it still doesn't take away the pain. As you can see this is a personal battle with me. My doctors really dont have a clue as to how i still manage to do what I do. I wont even talk to a Dr until they have read my full medical history Because you would never guess there was a dam thing wrong with me just by looking at me.
But its how I feel inside that will eventually bring me to my knees.
How did you manage to get Dr prescribed steroids for pain? If your talking about cortisone shots thats not the same as what were talking about here. I have had more of those then I can count and most of them were pointless if not worse.
I have tried to get my Dr to prescribe AAS and unless you have aids you can forget it. My friend just finished chemo and they wont even prescribe him deca which would be the most beneficial medication for him.
Im done blowing steam thanks for the relief....

smallfry's picture

Wow! I didn't realize this post would hit so many with such issues. I too have a unique career with injuries. Definitely not as bad as yours but luckily I have doctors focused on my well being at work. If I have a problem I talk with the trainers and medical experts at my work. If they see an issue they send me off to a specialist. Fortunately all I have is a torn miniscus and low test issues. Haven't started TRT yet but I am prescribed to start when I'm ready. Pain meds weren't my issue. I was just concerned if they would show false results after a few days of use post visectomy. In my line of work we are not allowed to perform while on opiates. I can say that test does help reduce pain from previous injuries ten fold from experience. Beware though, pain will return once off. So in my opinion TRT is the only real answer. I don't know what line of work you're in but good on you for being strong. Moral of my post is Opiates are bad and a band aide for a long term issue.

joker's picture

I agree I Hate pain pills. They kill you in many ways but what other options is there? I've tried them all and Nome of them work. The Dr. If I let them would prescribe me the strongest meds possible but I don't want them. Gear hell me way more then pills, but don't tell my docs this omg they act like the sky is falling. I have become so used to my pain meds they don't come close to .making me high they me amplified and I asked why. The Dr. Said with the amount of injury I have being bake to be pain free increases my energy. You can never tell I'm on pain meds I don't get the same sides as most. On gear though I notice I reduce the amount of pain meds I take. But this last spinal surgery has fucked me. The Dr stuck the wrong part in and it's causing all sorts of negative problems. Like I used to run test deca cycle and since surgery I had a bud reaction to deca. I now have pains all up and down my entire body that I never had before. It sucks sometimes I wonder if I'm ever going to come but of this one or is the fintal straw for me. And it was a Dr fucking up that caused it. I try to stay positive but when you can't function normally anymore it beck.es depressing. I did notice though that I believe the test fights the opiates for the same receptors because others times were my pain meds don't work at all. IDK to be honest with you bro o utility myself down all the time for taking pain meds but I really have tried other venues and this is what I'm left with. I hate the dam things but at the same time I'm glad their available.

joker's picture

I have been taking pain killers since 98 mostly vicoden Norco was on oxycontin for a year or 2 that sucked. But anyways vicoden make me fuck like a stallion and my test levels never dropped until my last major surgery in 2010. So 12 years of almost everyday use of an opiate didnt screw me up. Then again I have never abused my meds so there you go that my .02

bigkev45's picture

guy's wait a minute opiates absolutely kill youre test levels in fact destroy them after prolonged use they eat away at muscle tissue all sorts of stuff like vitamin depletion.. i work in this field anybody having a problem pm me i can help you or answer questions..

joker's picture

I have questions for you and some insight to give. This really is a interesting subject as I run gear I take Norco for pain but I notice weird shit. And maybe you have some answers.

long term opiates will drain the life out of you . I used them for my illness Fibromyalgia..sometimes its so severe I can't walk, even shaving my face hurts I can literally feel every hair getting oulled out.but I was taking them for about 8 or 9 montha I lost so much weight on them..plus its poison it literally sucks the life out of you..feeling no energy just like low t...they have ultram which is non narcotic which works awesome... I highly recommended this for anyone in pain rather then getting opiates . I wishyou luck bro, when I was taking themit didn't make my test levels score any different I always had low t regardless on pills or not

wolfman's picture

Ultram or Tramadol is a narcotic in my state and let me tell you the withdrawls are a bitch I have been through it...deff as bad as vicoden.

joker's picture

I have tried all of these especially when they first came out they are kind of a synthetic and fucking horrible. Will never touch them again I just stick with Norco 10/325 . They are trying to put me back on oxycontin s and fuck those to. Mood swings and withdrawal s will kill you it seems like.

arlis77's picture

really?...never heard of a non narcotic medicine...being narcotic in some states..unless maybe a differ country. it all has to pass fda which classifieds the meds in one category not two?..how can they do that?..also been taking them for years I can go off for days and not have any withdrawals...are you abusing them? it would only make sense

joker's picture

Ultram made me feel ad act like a complete asshole it should be a narcotic shit the way it made me feel was worse then Norco.

wheels's picture

I dont know anything about the classification, but I have taken both Vicodin and Tramadol. Tramadol is harder to get addicted to because there is no euphoria, even at higher dosages. It will alter your mood, but I personally found it to be an unpleasant alteration

Tramadol interacts with opiate receptors the same as vicodin, so if you take enough long enough you will experience physical withdrawl symptoms for a couple of days.

Vicodin, on the other hand is highly psychologically addictive as well as physically addictive, and withdrawls suck big time for a week or two

arlis77's picture

your right i was doing little more research..they say Tramadol is just as hard to get off too..that is strange i guess the body gets used to the pain relief then once taken away withdrawals happen..

wheels's picture

As Blue78 mentioned, only long term use. I took opiates for four years due to back pain and the MD said that very likely lowered my test--level did not come back up after I quit them either. But I would not worry about it lowering your test level after only three days.

The MDs always want to retest because testosterone replacement therapy is permenent and they dont want to start it unless you really need it. Sure wont hurt to wait a month and check again just to be sure.

logan's picture

Not sure about opiates but I know alcohol definitely does.

joker's picture

Funny I find myself not wanting to drink running gear, just doesn't seem right and it's so hard on the liver and training.anyways.

blue78's picture

I just looked it up and the only way painkillers affect the Test levels is if you been using painkillers for years not if you only take them every once in a while. Here's the website for the article I found. http://www.healthiertalk.com/dr-dach-low-testosterone-pain-pills-1533

Steelneck's picture

Yeah bro, opiates jack up testosterone production. I see a pain management doctor who routinely prescribes a testosterone cream that he has compounded for his male patients who's levels take a dive after some time on opiates. Never researched the reasons behind this, but have no reason to doubt this a Dr who deals exclusively in the field opiate management.

smallfry's picture

blue78, funny you linked that article. I spoke with his partner earlier today before I posted this. She recommended I order another count a month from now. Really was indecisive on whether or not an Opiate could affect it, but did seem to sound a little on the no side.

blue78's picture

ya i think so too, well bro I hope it helped.

fast48's picture

I got fixed. Vicodin is pain killer...should be no issue. I have read lots about weed lowering test levels though.

Deuce9's picture

Weed does not lower test levels. I used to smoke at least 10 blunts a day not counting the bong loads joints and vape rips. My test levels were always high until I started abusing opiates.

smallfry's picture

Yeah, weed is fun but not for me. I was just curious as to what would be the outcome after a low test count.

great way to a free trip to detox

hoagie_m's picture

detox is free where you live?

joker's picture

Cali has ways time free detox, .especially if your working and they find out your using and an addict the comany is required to help you through detox about a month in house type of shit. I figured this out when I went to fire a guy for showing up to work drunk all the time. What a trip huh?
