LA Fitness Sports Club Manager Charged with Steroid Possession in Staten Island
The New York Police Department (NYPD) discovered what they estimated to be $20,000 worth of anabolic steroids at the home of the fitness sales manager for the LA Fitness sports club in Staten Island on August 13, 2014. Ryan Kopyar was charged with four counts of violating New York's controlled substances law.

Kopyar's arrest came after local and federal agents, including the NYPD and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), targeted the gym manager in a joint investigation. SILive.com, the internet home of the Staten Island Advance newspaper, reported details of the bust based on information obtained from court information documents.

According to the documents, police observed Kopyar in possession of a package containing steroids at the U.S. Post Office in New Springville, New York. The package contained vials of injectable liquid steroids and bottles of oral steroid pills that were allegedly packaged “with intent to sale”. The newspaper's characterization of the post office visit implies that Kopyar may have been mailing the steroid package to another party.

Shortly after the DEA agent observed Kopyar at the post office, the NYPD searched Kopyar's apartment and discovered in excess of 25,000 steroid pills, an unspecified number of vials of injectable steroids and raw steroid powder. The steroid pills were separated and organized in 22 plastic ziploc bags. Kopyar allegedly admitted to law enforcement officials that the steroids belonged to him.

Police placed the value of the steroid seizure at approximately $20,000. However, police have been known to routinely overestimate the value of steroid-related seizures.

The Office of Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan, Jr. announced that Ryan Kopyar was charged with two counts of fifth-degree and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (anabolic steroids).

Kopyar was arraigned in Stapleton Criminal Court on August 14, 2014. He was released on his own recognizance.

Reporters with the Staten Island Advance visited the Staten Island LA Fitness and found that Kopyar was still working following his arrest. However, Kopyar refused to comment on his case citing the advice of legal counsel.

"This is obviously my career on the line right now, and my lawyer says he doesn't want me to comment," Kopyar said.

It is always important to remember that defendants in criminal cases are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Kopyar's next court date was scheduled for October 16, 2014.

I think it's wrong that law enforcement spends time and tax payers money on steroid busts. I know it's illegal without a prescription, but we who use steroids are just trying to better our bodies. They need to spend all of those resources on cleaning up all of the meth labs, crack houses and heroin dealers etc. Just my opinion, but I think steroids should take back seat to all the other poison that's ruining our country. I live about a hundred yards from a state trooper and there was an active method lab right across the street for well over a year before anything was done. Everyone knew what was going on there. I couldn't let my kids ride their bikes or anything. In the small community were I live the politicians get their hands greased and make the cops turn their heads. Unless the feds come sniffing around, then they got to play along. The last county sheriff we had was well known for taking pay offs from drug dealers. That's what's wrong with the world today, whatever it takes to make money and it doesn't matter how many people get hurt, sick or die as the outcome.

they can't tell a lamp from a shipload of steroids by just looking at the box

Customs x-rays a large amount of incoming packages, so they certainly can tell what's in the package. The issue is that they have such a large volume of packages that they can only deal with so much and so things do get by.

I wasn't trying to bust you balls. They just did a 60 minutes show on this and they x-ray quite a few things, not just suspicious items.
They also said that most things get through, due to the sheer volume.

Excellent.
