Another Black House MMA Fighter Tests Positive for the Anabolic Steroid Masteron

Black House (Casa Preta) MMA, a mixed martial arts gym based out of Rio de Janiero with facilities in Los Angeles and San Diego, has had two fighters test positive for the use of anabolic steroids this summer. UFC featherweight Brian Ortega and UFC middleweight Kevin Casey both tested positive for the steroid drostanolone.

Drostanolone is the parent compound in the increasingly popular steroid known by the trade name Masteron. Masteron has a fairly good side effect profile and can be compared to the milder steroids such as Primobolan Depot; it undergoes no adverse metabolism since it does not convert to estradiol or dihydrotestosterone (DHT). As a result, Masteron may be an ideal choice for athletes who are competing in weight classes and do not seek to gain substantial amounts of bodyweight.

Ortega recently defeated Mike De La Torre at UFC Fight Night on FOX: Lawler vs. Brown on July 26, 2014. The post-fight urinalysis was sent to the WADA-accredited UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory; the specimen showed traces of drostanolone metabolites according to the California State Athletic Commission. CSAC executive director Andy Foster confirmed the steroid positive and the resulting nine month suspension and $2,500 fine. Ortega's victory was changed to a decision of “no contest”.

Ortega was considered to be one of the most promising newcomers to enter Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) this year. He won the Resurrection Fighting Alliance Featherweight Championship when he defeated Keoni Koch at RFA 12: Ortega vs. Koch on January 24, 2014.

The steroid positive marred his debut in UFC as well as his undefeated record.

Ortega followed a similar path as MMA veteran Kevin Casey. Casey was also a member of the Black House MMA team. Casey went on to win the RFA Middleweight Championship (at RFA 15: Casey vs. Sanchez) before signing with the UFC.

Casey tested positive for the same steroid just a few weeks before Ortega's steroid positive. Casey won via an early TKO against Bubba Bush at UFC 175 on July 5, 2014. Masteron ended up spoiling his victory.

Casey apologized for his action in a message posted on the social networking site Twitter.

“I apologize to [UFC and NSAC] for my irresponsible action,” Casey tweeted. “I made a bad decision trying to cut weight. We are competing in a cleaner sport.”

Ortega and Casey are both linked to Black House MMA. They are both former RFA champions. They both recently signed with UFC. And now they both tested positive for drostanolone
