Our whole treasured philosophy of self-sufficiency had to be cast aside. This had not been done with old-fashioned willpower; it was instead a matter of developing the willingness to accept these new facts of living. We neither ran nor fought. But accept we did. And then we were free.
— BEST OF THE GRAPEVINE, Vol. I, p. 198
I can be free of my old enslaving self. After a while I recognize, and believe in, the good within myself. I see that I have been loved back to recovery by my Higher Power, who envelops me. My Higher Power becomes that source of love and strength that is performing a continuing miracle in me. I am sober . . . and I am grateful.

I read this another way when I first saw it - I saw it as 'Stay strong when you want to give up people that are no longer good for you!!' Lol

I think that is also something important to consider, that when you begin this new sober lifestyle there will be people from your past or those you still do associate with that you need to let go of. These are often the people who you thought of as your friends through alcoholism - but are ultimately no more than drinking partners who in turn make you believe that you are not an alcoholic! It will also include people who bring negativity into your life, those who create drama and stress, anxiety and ultimately cause you to relapse as you struggle to cope with their erratic actions and behaviour through being sober. Its not that you are being selfish in doing this at all, you are just now doing what is right for you and your own wellbeing, and ultimately sobriety Smile
