+ 1 Does anyone train MMA / Boxing alongside weights?
ad
Something I've really wanted to get into alongside weight training is MMA or Boxing on my 'rest days' from lifting. A new centre has opened up near me that I'm thinking of trying out as a newbie lol
Do many guy's on here do it together with lifting weights, as the only thing putting me off is a few others I have spoken to have said it actually made them lose muscle mass and strength because of the cardiovascular side of it and the need to be fairly fit for all the fighting involved.
What are peoples general experience of doing this and does it interfere greatly with recovery time and healing from training sessions?

BJJ & Muay Thai...
For me, It’s challenging to do bodybuilding or crossfit type training on top of the MMA...I’ve had to evolve towards sport specific training. It would be too taxing on my nervous system to do the hard MMA training, and lift hard.
If you look at Mike Rashid he lost a lot of muscle once he decided to box again... Well idk if he lost size to box or because his gym got busted and his supplier was gone! Either way he lost a lot of size!
I’ve boxed for 25 years and wrestled for almost 20 alongside weight lifting. I use weights as an accessory to my training and not vice versa. With that being said I don’t think it’s a bad idea to start training mma, it’s fun as hell and it’s great cardio. You may have to alter your weight training a little bit if you end up really enjoying mma and want to perform better on the mat. I’ve found the heavier I lift I naturally tend to slow down on the mat and my cardio struggles with more heavier lifting. I will warm you... boxing wrestling etc is a heck of an addiction once you get started! Have fun!
I do mma and thai box, I don’t like cadio so its perfect to me to do some, also didn’t loose weight you gonna loose all fat if diet is good, go and try it, have fun))
I've done both. It's a totally different workout! MMA will hit muscles you didn't know you have, but it is great for cardio too!
I guess I can say I'm a mma fighter I have what they call a boxers break in my right hand right now from my last match with a door in my house. It was a draw but my hand has me out of the gym for a couple months so I think the door won
I train BJJ 4-6 days a week. It started off as an idea for cardio that was actually fun but turned into an addiction. I’ve found myself truly having to focus on recovery which is something I haven’t actually had to do before. Two hard sessions two days in a row and trying to lift intense will have me wounded.
I do bag work 3-4 days a week as cardio, I've been doing it since my military days . Now as for full on MMA training that is some intense stuff, my opinion would be you cant do both heavy lifting day in day out and full on MMA training way to much stress on the system bro.
But working in some bag drills hell yea I highly recommend it, keeps your hands quick and its great cardio. Just make sure to wrap your wrist up nice and tight a few wrong hooks to the bag and you can end up with a boxers fracture let me tell you that shit hurts and you will not do much lifting with it.
AnonWhen was the last time you got hit in the face?
Fuck that, too old for that shit.. I can't afford to get any uglier either...
Bloody ell I had to think about that one then Lol When I was 17, funny how it never happens once you start running gear isn't it.
AnonYou get into a fight now here, and you're gonna talk to a judge.. people are so sensitive.. seriously, my parents called the cops on me for beating my brother down (we both had some bruises lol). I got 2 years probation and spent a week in a troubled youths home...WTTTFFFF. ffs if I got into a fight at work, cus let's be honest I don't go anywhere else, I'd be charged with attempted murder I bet..I'm so sick of snowflakes..you used to be able to Duke it out for a bit, then shake hands. NOW if you tell someone to come outside and settle up, you're lookin at an assault charge lol
Not in every situation, but the possibility is very real..I live in a very nice happy town, so I'm ok..besides the occasional old fuck who like to share their racist opinions, and I have to hold the crazy back..happens at least once a month..
Move to WV. Get a job in a Coalmine.
Seen a lot of fights in my day. Just so you don’t hit a boss your gtg.
I still don't know how you work in that type of environment - does working deep underground in a dark claustrophobic place just not bother you at all? Or is it more a case of adapting to it overtime.
I’ve been gone a little over three years.
I made a little over 100 the last five years I worked. I had 100% insurance. No premium, fully paid with only a 12 co pay and 5 dollar scripts. Pension and 401 k.
For the area it’s the best you can do.
Being in tight spots doesn’t bother me.
I’ve drilled and shot in 28in in a jack line.
So low you have to lay on your side to piss.
That’s also where you eat your lunch.
12 and 14 hour shifts, 7 days a week for 6 weeks.
It sucked but the wife liked the checks...
My last three years were easy though.
Man credit to you, that's some seriously hard graft - Did you still have enough energy to train after or before work then?
No but I watch a lot of boxing. I figure why get risk getting fucked up when you can watch someone else get fucked up...
Who do you got for wilder vs ortize this weekend?
Molinin302It's either mans fight, but if I was putting money on it I'd go Wilder.
I’m pulling for Ortiz. I understand he’s 50 lol.
He only had two weeks for the first match to prepare. I think he’s gonna win. I really do.
That is an interesting thought. Hope your right if not Ruiz will beat him.
I’ve done some boxing, mostly drills and sparring here and there. It’s fun but you will most likely be one of the slowest guys there if you’re carrying a lot of muscle. Fortunately that means you can take some hits. If you end up liking it and wanting to get better the training necessary, as you suspect, is almost the opposite.
You want as much strength and speed as possible with as little size as possible to be effective. Also while this hasn’t happened to me personally I’ve seen weightlifter friends of mine have some pretty nasty injuries as a result of getting into mma. I think boxing you’d be safe but anything with a lot of ground game and kicks leaves your knees so vulnerable and it doesn’t take much for you to never squat again. Keep that in mind.
AnonI hold my wife's hand in the snow and ice here so I don't slip and hurt my lifting game. She's 118lbs lol my hero.
So is the theory that if you go down you can use her to land on LOL
AnonLol yes...shes supposed to catch me, or Break my fall..if she dies in the process I can replace her with the nanny..lmao joking..but they're both hot soooo...
That's really helpful to know that about the injury side - I never even considered that. It wouldn't take much to get a knee side swiped and it end up being knackered unable to support a decent amount of weight would it.
Exactly, you end up fighting a guy who’s been trained in how to go down “safely” his whole life and you can toss him out of a moving train he’ll be fine. A good kick takes out your ACL/MCL, maybe worse. You throw an elbow and connect wrong and end up separating your elbow joint, no more heavy upper body movements etc... I’ve seen it happen.
I'd be absolutely devastated if I couldn't train again, so it definitely isn't worth the risk for me personally. I stupidly punched my rear view car mirror once in a fit of rage years ago without thinking of the consequences, my knuckles went straight through it and the mess it made of them was unbelievable. I then couldn't train at all as I couldn't close my hand fully or grip anything for 6 weeks because of the stitches. It was pure hell and something I'd never jeopardise again. Thanks for the heads up
You’ll most likely lose size. For sure. From my exp. but I’d venture to say you’ll get stronger. Not weaker from it.
Oh Yeh, I forgot you do it pal. Man that conversation was sometime back! Lol
