ad
i do my workouts in my basement. i live where its cold for half the year. i keep my vents in my basement closed because it is not finished and i only use it for storage and for my bench and pullup bar, ects. i was wondering if i am asking for an injury. should i open my vents? will i build more muscle in a warmer temp? i stretch as best i can and i do wear a long sleeve shirts. i could use some experienced opinions on cold temp workouts. thanks everyone

AnonTheres nothin better than a nice long jog during winter! I find i can run further for less puff! Just stretch properly and keep ur fluids up
Wardi77What else can I say that hasn't been already said? lol Speaking from experience, I work out in my garage and I love it during the summer time, especially jumping in the pool after a good workout, however winter is a different story. I find that warming up helps tremendously. Before I lift anything, I get on the elliptical for 10-15 minutes and that usually gets me warmed up enough to start lifting. If you don't have access to a treadmill or elliptical I highly recommend doing body squats as a warm up. I used to do 3 sets of 20 body squats before I got my elliptical and it did the job. Or you can get a few portable heaters for the basement. I was walking around Costco the other day and saw this nice large sized portable heater than I am highly considering putting in my garage.
Your warmups and cooldowns are more important in a colder scenario. Warming up makes you almost forget about the cold IMO. And that makes your workout easier.
I would be sure you are properly nourished and hydrated. Dehydration is a big deal in cold weather too. According to the World of Sports Science: "The bodily stores of glucose, stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles and converted to the energy component adenosine triphosphate (ATP), are depleted approximately five times more quickly in cold weather, a circumstance that forces the body to switch to the conversion of body fat to ATP for its energy requirements.”
A thorough warm up and cool down of the body are essential to cold weather exercise. The warm up will lessen both the mental and the physiological shock of taking the body into cold.
There is a possibility of workout induced bronchitis if you are susceptible. And if you have asthma breathing will obviously be harder.
A warm layered clothing is suggested so if you happen to think you can handle you can remove a layer temperature permitting.
Hope this helps.

thanks for the response. the link was very helpful. its weird that you mention bronchitis. i was diagnosed with it at a young age, but only get symptoms if im shoveling snow or something strenuous in very cold weather and i do have medicine. this is why eroids is worth a mint. (so i dont kill myself) thanks portuegse!! ... and thanks eroids for making this possible.
sgtstedankoI think, when muscles are coldest they are more easily strained, so it's important to warm up the body as quickly as possible. I also workout in the cold, lots outside : ) I feel get better workouts in the cold, most of the time (just dress appropriate, layer, no cotton. If I were you, I'd warmup w/bw pushups, dips, squats, pullups, etc. Before hitting the iron. Your body will work to keep your core temp @ 98 regardless. Just be safe, & you're fine, brother. As far as building more muscle cold vs hot. I would think only if you were more comfortable training in warmer weather, & could train more intensely.
thanks sgt stedanko, thanks for the response. i do do some warm ups before i hit the iron. why no cotton? i hope thats not a dumb question.
