+ 3 Testing your blood sugar

ad

Hey guys, this one could really fall into weight loss or weight gain but I decided to put it here since I find it more helpful when cutting.

Anyway, I decided that I was going to go the extra mile and look beyond just the macro/micro breakdown on the foods I eat and see how different meals affected my blood sugar levels. To do this, I bought a glucose meter and some test strips and began testing my blood sugar. First, I tested myself in a fasted state (8 hours without food) for 7 consecutive days and averaged the results to establish a baseline glucose level to bench mark against.

Once I had established a baseline, I began to test myself exactly one hour after each meal and record the results. After eating the same meal 3 times (all ingredients weighed and measured to ensure consistency) I averaged the results and recorded them on a chart in my kitchen.

Now that I have been doing this for a few months I have a chart with all of my favorite meals and the effect that each has on my blood sugar and insulin levels. This is absolutely invaluable information for anyone in the health/fitness/bodybuilding world. If your bulking and want to spike your insulin pre or post workout- decide how high you want it to go then look at your chart and decide what to eat. Cutting? Look at your chart to find the meals that will have the least effect on your blood sugar and raise them very slowly.

Yes, it is a lot of work and yes there is a ton of information on high GI and low GI foods to steer you in the right direction. However, it is undeniably true that everyone is different and this is the only way to know for sure how different meals will affect you.

Hope it helps, just wanted to share my experience. I am by all means an over achiever so I tend to do these things and thought like minded people may find it interesting.

I like it bud! Test strips have never been cheaper. I think I'll give it a shot

Awesome, I'm glad you like it. With test strips being cheap and the fact that once you have numbers for the majority of your meals you don't have to test much it's really not that bad

Thanks bro. Yeah, one day I was explaining to someone why they should get blood work done on cycle then it hit me that I could do my own blood work "on diet" as well.
