high calorie shakes

ad

I rely heavily on shakes to get my calories in. Always have 4 decent meals a day but need shakes to add some calories.

Just thought I'd share my everyday shake and see if anyone has any ideas about ways to vary it

  • 1 banana ( works well if you chop banana and freeze it)
  • 2 scoops whey
  • serious mass 1 scoop / handfood of oats
  • about 500mls- whole milk (sometimes use almond milk just for a change)
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey

200g carbs, 65g fat, 111g protein
Comes in at around 1800kcal,
I make it the night before and have it throughout the next day.

Any ideas would be great

Thanks

Save the whey for pre/post work out nutrition. When I'm bulking I'll make shakes for extra calories to. Try liquid egg whites in stead of whey. Slower digesting protein and only contains one ingredient (egg whites). As suggested below rolled oats for slow carbs.

You could also throw in some yogurt and take out a scope of powder

Would you like to know a big secret about those shakes? Do you want to know why they recommend only using shakes as a SUPPLEMENT and not part of your daily intake? Because protein in it's powdered form goes right through you; Carbs in its powdered form goes right through you, When you eat whole foods your body has to digest it so it is a slow release of carbs and protein to feed your muscles. Protein and carb powder is meant for after a workout or pre workout to give you an instant feed; almost like taking BCAA's.
You can pack a couple chicken breasts pre cooked in your pocket and munch on those all day and gain better benefits then sipping a bottle of powdered shit. I would take another look at your eating habits to find out why you think you need those waste of money shakes to gain mass because all you are doing is spiking your insulin and packing in fat and not muscle. also that shake is NOT giving you 111 grams of protein, your body is rejecting more then half of that because the human body will not and cannot ingest that much. Although some bodies can process a good amount at one sitting the average person would have to have a protein/blood test to see how much is actually being used.

Cut out the waste of money shakes and get more whole foods in your diet, the only thing you are bulking is that companies salary and your gut.

Thanks for your reply.
Yeah I hear what you're saying, they are obviously not ideal but they've definitively helped me put on mass.

I don't drink it all at once, it's spaced throughout the day.

If your body can absorb if after a workout, then surely it can absorb it throughout the day. Your digestive systems doesn't change.

Also slightly contradictory, if it's not absorbed then why would it cause an insulin spike?

I'm a doctor myself and I'm not suggesting the shakes are the answer or the best way to bulk.

But given that I feel the shakes work for me (balance of nutrition and convenience), I was looking for improvements to the shake that I take.

Well the good thing is it not just protein powder there's some good stuff in there and I would think the insulin spike is from the honey and banana also. But I don't do protein powder unless I have no time at all I would prefer to eat my protein and only use shakes during cycle

Too sweet for my taste IMHO. But to each it's own. I would add steal cut oats
