+ 1 Egg prices?

ad

Can you believe that the price of eggs have doubled in the past month or so? I'm sure most of you on here eat eggs every day as a great used to be cheap source of protein
as a daily part of your diet. I personally eat 8 eggs every morning as it is a great source of protein that is quickly metabolized by the body before hitting the gym.
These egg prices are absolutely crazy and l'm now actually thinking about buying my own chickens to get fresh eggs every day which would probably only be a fraction of the cost.

Beginning of 2023 I seen then shoot up from 20 to 25 to over 28 $ within 3 weeks

just for my curiosity, how much are eggs in your country? For instance in my country 10pack is probably just under 2€ and the average income probably arround 1600€. Considering this eggs are still super cheap. In 5 L size eggs, its approx 25g of protein for 1 Eur, no meat or any other source can't match this.

Just got two 18 packs from the wholesale store for $15USD

JakeKO's picture

An 18 pack in my town is no $7.99. It isn’t to be $3.99 last summer

Drexyl's picture

Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

JakeKO's picture

Tell me about it

Gym and Bikes_bro's picture

Its twice as much as we pay, but other important aspect is, what is an average income in your country... ?

Drexyl's picture

That’s a very hard question to answer, especially since Covid and the government paying people to stay home, although that’s over now. With current inflation, healthcare costs, etc., there’s more to it than salary alone. But if I had to throw a number out there, excluding the “well off” I’d have to say 35-45K annually would be a fair number for average.

I don't buy eggs since I have my own chickens but people around me are complaining about paying $5 or more for a dozen. Used to get a dozen for 89cents. So the price has gone up 5-6X what it used to be.

I was always thinking about having few chicken, unfortunately haven't ever realized that since... That's a huge increase. In Europe we're being told that this food prices increase is because supply chain problem after covid and because of the war in the Ukraine, but I don't believe that. Most of food we buy in a stores, we produce ourselves, in the country, have nothing to do with global events....

Right ! Whole lot easier to go to my chicken coop. I also have a few milking goats, which are supposed to have high fat/protein.

Makwa's picture

My wife wanted to get some goats but I said no way after seeing all these videos of them walking on top of people's cars. Lol

Mac12769's picture

I'll post some baby Nigerian Dwarf goats. Only get to about 75 pounds or so. Tame as puppies and can be housebroken too. They will melt her heart.

Makwa's picture

I'll be sure not to show her Lol

1st baby girl just hit the ground about a hour ago. They are coming….

I had my own chickens for a few years. The eggs were incredible, but it was definitely a lot of extra work. My neighbors loved me because none of them paid for eggs anymore. One night a raccoon broke into their coop and killed them all. They were like pets at that point, so it really sucked. Decided against getting new ones in fear it would just happen again.

I’m convinced that all of our eggs, and all other foods that we are having shortages on are being sent down to the border to feed the immigrants. I don’t believe that chickens across the country are all getting bird flu at the same time. That’s the biggest crock of shit I ever heard. Every farm is different, and gets their feed from different places. It’s all a big excuse to increase their prices to make up for what the government is taking from them at a minimum charge.

Makwa's picture

As soon as I name my chickens they get eaten by something. Racoon tastes pretty good too though Lol

Mac12769's picture

Farm rule # 3
Never name an animal if you plan to eat it. (my reformed city wife learned the hard way)

JakeKO's picture

Oh, that was definitely that Racoons last meal. He didn’t remember how to get back out, so he caught a .22 to the head.

Drexyl's picture

Not to mention there’s just something awesome about a sunny side up or poached egg over toast.

Makwa's picture

Alot of people with chickens have so many eggs they end up giving them away, at least I do anyway. Ask around you will probably find someone.

Bill1976's picture

Do any of your chickens lay Cadbury eggs?

Look in the peddler. Or whatever sort of paper you have wherever you're at. Likely there's some people out there in your community with chickens who will sell you eggs. If you bring them an egg cartons they'll likely give you a discount. Bonus, farm fresh eggs are f****** delicious. Just can't boil them bastards. I get 18 eggs for five bucks from the lady I go to. They're $10 at the supermarket.

iFit's picture

Yeah. Sucks but the market will adjust in a few months and prices will drop as they always do. Although they have doubled it only works out to an extra buck or day.

flacidego's picture

I like real eggs the best but had to get a 4 gallon/11 lbs container of whole powdered eggs off Amazon for around $50. I add enough water and a touch of olive oil into the mix which makes good scrambles, omelettes, and little muffin tin quiches. If you go the chicken route feed them flax seeds so you get deep orange yolks that don’t taste like hayseed.

UncleYoked's picture

Get a few chickens. I have some free range and a garden. A good way to get some awesome eggs is to take your meat scraps, fish, etc and lay them on a net in a scratch area (far away from your house) flies will lay eggs and they'll load up with maggots that fall off and the chickens go nuts, gives you some hardy dark orange yolks in your eggs.

press1's picture

Lmfao so the chickens eat the maggots do they?

JEX30Sex's picture

Chickens eat everything.

Mac12769's picture

Another reason I have a farm and moved away from city 5 years ago….anticipated this. And yes have 15 or so chickens -- too.

Do not represent yourself as a source until you've been verified... You won't be verified if your huevos are too small.
