alcohols effect on protein synthesis

ad

I've heard a lot how drinking is bad for a bodybuilder because it lowers protein synthesis as well as the empty calories and binge eating that comes along with it. I enjoy an occasional drink so I decided to look up some studies on the effect and thought i'd share it with you guys here. In one study men who drank 1.5 grams per kg saw a 37% decline in protein synthesis. That's about 10 drinks for a 200 pound person. Another study showed drinking 5 beers lowered protein synthesis by 24%. That study didn't note the weight of the study participants. That same study showed drinking 2 beers had no effect on protein synthesis. This seems to affect men more then women. In these studies they drank alcohol immediately after the workout and it's unclear to what percentage time could affect protein synthesis however for most people protein synthesis returns to normal within 24 hours at most. For severe alcoholics it can take 3 days for protein synthesis to return to normal.

It's safe to assume a lot of people in here are not natural. If you are taking oral steroids that are already taxing your liver it's also a bad idea to drink heavy as your liver is already under enough stress. If you are natural alcohol has some negative effects on testosterone. It seems that if you are going to drink try to limit it to 2 drinks which likely won't effect protein synthesis much and drinking on a rest day might be a good idea as well. As far as the type of drink, beer converts to estrogen fairly fast. Red wine is probably the healthiest choice. What are your guys thoughts? Do you drink? Do you have a strategy for how and when you drink? Also if anyone has any studies on alcohols effects on steroids i'd love to hear about it. I know testosterone increases protein synthesis so it could have a very different effect for many of us but I wasn't able to find a study related to that.

Alcohol is mostly bad for your body, especially when discussing hormones and the inner workings to become big and jacked. However, its not too bad of an effect as long as you dont go overboard and get blackout drunk like youre 20.
I socially drink out on some nights when the wives let us all go out :/

I personally don't drink. If I do have a drink it's on a rare occasion. Never felt the need or want to. But i don't see an issue as long as you aren't over doing it. Moderation like everything else. Enjoy your life I always say.

I absolutely will not touch alcohol Sunday through Friday. Saturday it's game on. I don't drink till I black out or fall or anything but I don't count my drinks. I can always tell in the gym if I drink the night before even a little bit. So I stopped doing it.

My best advice is to enjoy life and a drink a good beer every once in a while. I am a home brewer and have a 9 tap kegerator with 2 nitro taps. I enjoy the taste of a good beer. I don't drink to get drunk though. Tbone on the grill with a nice cold one after a hard workout hasn't steered me wrong yet.

It's refreshing to see such sound advice from someone who clearly has no bias on the topic. Biggrin

Personally I don’t even think about it. I work out daily for 90 min for 40 years and it’s worked just fine for me. My wife and I go out and drink, I don’t count how many but it’s a lot more than 2, every Saturday night and have fun. I stopped listening to the experts after they told me margarine was better than butter and then change their minds again of course. Just like what they do with coffee. Don’t mess with my butter and coffee.

Yeah I hear you, another one is saying too much protein is unhealthy as reflected by the daily limits for it. There's no real evidence of that. I do think protein synthesis is probably effected but these studies they drank immediately after working out which no one would do. I don't know how much they'd be effected working out in the morning and drinking at night. Probably a lot less if anything.
