+ 10 WHAT MADE YOU START WORKING OUT?? and... I SNITCHED on someone.
It was field day....6th grade... three days left until summer break. For those of you who are of the generation where we don't make kids exercise anymore because it might hurt their feelings, "FIELD DAY" is a day at school where you don't have to do any work.. it's filled with events like sprints, wheelbarrow races, and plenty of food and cookies.
Anyway, after the events were over, we all had to line up on the playground to get ready to go back into the building. And when you're in line, you are NOT allowed to talk. Well, Tommy Kenton was talking and the teacher says. Who was talking in line?, and I immediately blurted out "Tommy Kenton was". I had completely forgotten that not only was Tommy Kenton bigger than me, but I had also just witnessed him pick up an entire container of Kool Aid during field day---it must have weighed at least 30 pounds. At about the same time that fact had dawned me was the exact same time that Tommy looked back at me and says.. "Hey Goth (they called me Goth back then).. after school, you're a DEAD mother fucker ! And yes, he threw the "mother fucker" in there and slammed his fist into his open hand just to drive the point home. SHIT!!! I had a serious problem. I had just won every single foot race that day--- nobody in the school could could outrun me--- and that was going to come in real handy for the next 3 days.
Sure enough, at 3:00, I head out the door to walk home, and there was Tommy-- jacket off and sleeves rolled up to expose his massive 10" arms. I hit the nitrous button and was gone. He never had a chance. Same story next two days after school.
But over the summer, I started thinking, Fuck, I cant keep doing this. I have to face this bastard at some point. I'll NEVER get a piece of ass if girls see this shit. So I started doing chin-ups in the back yard off the swing set and pushups. I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew that I was never going to snitch on anyone ever again. Apparently it was NOT cool to be a suck ass.
7th grade comes 3 months later.... new school with many more students from other schools and it's the first day of gym class. I'm in the locker room with all the other boys changing into gym gear, and as soon as my Mr. Rogers-inspired sweater and T-shirt come off, every kid in the locker room was aghast and freakin over my arms... kept asking me if I lifted weights and worked out etc... I had no idea what they were talking about. I didn't even realize my body had responded over the summer. From that point on, I was hooked. I had crazy genetics for building muscle, and I suppose you could say that I didn't find bodybuilding... it found me.
OH... and 2 days later I see Tommy in the hall--- I was feeling cocky and confident. Tommy sees me, looks down at the floor and never said a word. I never saw him after that because my dad took a job in another city, but after 40 plus years all I have to say is.... "HEY TOMMY, IF I SEE YOU, YOU'RE A DEAD MOTHER FUCKER"

I fixed it for ya. Don't forget your no homo clauses again, or we're voting you off the island.
Don't want to get voted off for sure.....
No homo.....
Damn bro +2 for being honest. It was probably hard to Admit that. Hopefully, at least it may have helped you with the low self esteem part. Lol
Playing sports in high school received scholarship to college just kept it up, it's just been what I do
hemlockOGBecause it mentally keeps me grounded and gives goals and seeing gains keeps me motivated to stay sober. I sort of have to train..or mentally and emotionally I fall apart, every time I've taken long breaks and my body starts to turn to shit I get extremely depressed and lose sight of various things in my life like relationships, work, goals for my company... taking breaks fucks my energy up, my mood, my sleep, my appetite...as this point my body is dependent on working out so that my body and my mind feel well, after long breaks from the gym my body starts to deteriorate and then my mind and then my emotions. It started like any other drug, to feel good, now I'm addicted.
I've played hockey my whole time growing up. I started lifting to hit harder in high school. Then I joined the wrestling team and had to stay under 152 pounds. After that, I let lose and lifted hard.
I was always into martial arts as a kid, but I sucked at sports growing up. Gym class was a time to hit on girls. Until a volleyball hit you in the face. I ended up with a real cool gym teacher that would let us blow class, and go to the school gym. I still never put up any serious poundage or grew at all.
I'd moved out at around 16, and had this best friend I roomed up with. We were like brothers. I came home on my 19th birthday and caught him banging my girlfriend. We had a big fight, busted holes in some walls, and got evicted. I roomed up with another guy. He was the craziest addict I ever met, but he was into lifting. I started working out with him and was hate fueled over my " brother". Next thing I knew, I didn't really want to drink or party. I knew it would mess with my lifts. I never learned how to really eat until in my 30's, but I was a ripped little bastard back then.
I think my bro is a heroin addict now, and the girlfriend is a confused lesbian. She tried coming back around a few years back and I wasn't into it. So now she eats lots of cupcakes I think. I found personal strength and a higher power in myself, and they got dope and cupcakes, so it was a good deal.
I started lifting round 9th grade on and off nothing serious joined the military right after high school pt was free stayied kinda small for my frame got hurt in Iraq 06 retired in 08 and got super depressed I'm 5"9 and hit almost 300 lbs of shit .hit a extreme diet and cardio dropped to 210 and hit the weights hardds..5'9 34yr 20 inch guns gym beast 5days a week ...keeps me calm helps every aspect of my life
AnonI started working out because I seen a dude at Abercrombie & Fitch with bigger arms them me. Plus he smelled better then me, I could smell him 3 stores down. That son b!tch had confidence too, talking to hot babes with no shirt on, boot cut jeans with 18 hole's in then and leather flip flopes. Damn, to think of it that kid was my little brother.... true story...
I started lifting because I was the poster child for bullying. Used to get the shit beat out of me for no reason. Was tormented from 3rd through 12th grade because I was tiny as fuck and couldn't do shit about it. Never even broke 100 lbs until I graduated high school and the only one to ever look out for me was my best friend/brother. Me and him got into drugs pretty heavy the next couple of years because those people were more accepting until I overdosed and almost died. Then we both went to treatment. He had a lot of experience with lifting and started to teach me how to eat and lift better than I was. He was so happy to see me doing better and getting bigger from listening to him. Then he overdosed and died and I just never stopped.
I'm sorry to hear about your boy. I lost too many friends to drugs. I was very lucky to get out when I did. It's good to see you've come out on the other side. Keep it up bro. One day at a time. +1
Likewise bro. Lifting before I touched anything was very therapeutic for my recovery early. Was very angry all the time and I told myself no one could do anything about my physique but me. Just grateful even though I've caught a lot of shit on here, for doing things that could have destroyed my organs or possible killed me, to have found these forums so I can learn things the right way. +1 for gettin out before you got too deep!
+1 from me for sticking with it after his death. I've been sober 8yrs so I know all about that and how easy it would've been to fall back in to the abyss.
Yea bro I'm about 2.5 years in. Couldn't go back though man I don't think I have another go around in me. Probably wouldn't make it back. +1 for relating and knowing what it's like.
+1 brother. Two and a half years, after a tragedy like that.
Whatever demons you fight, just know you don't fight them alone. One day at a time, indeed.
My mantra has become ingrained when I hit the gym. "Remember why you lift." I say that before every workout as I look myself in the eyes in the mirror. The selfish side of me loves being strong, but I have people I love so fucking much that depend on my strength to take care of them, emotionally as well as physically. Always, remember why we lift, brother.
Women.. to start with, then it was the feeling I get achieving goals I've set myself.
Its also nice the way people treat you when you look like you can lift a fucking house above your head but that's one of the many prosatives.
i started lifting to get big cause I was tired of pmob always trying to play hide the hot dog and over power me. I wanted to get stronger because I hated that game
Hahaha...LMFAO!!!
Great story one I could relate to myself.+1
I played football from peewee league to high school. I was always a chubby lineman as a kid. It's funny how when your little it's "aww, look at him eat another 3 plates, he's our little lineman" and when u get a little older it's not so cute. Summer between 8th and 9th grade I hit the weights hard, actually did cardio for the first time in my life, and BAM! Moved to line backer, got bigger, faster, and started pulling chicks. The rest is history! I still struggle to cut and keep weight off, I'm a fat kid at heart. But damn I love lifting. And it's good for my mental state too, keeps me from losing my shit on a daily basis! Sanity and looking good with my shirt off, it's the stuff dreams are made of! Good post Goth!
+1 for that, brother. "Keeps me from losing my shit on a daily basis." I can relate, brother, holy moly can I relate.
I thought working out would help me score with the babes. Never did seem to work though.
Me too, I thought working out and getting bigger would mean more hot chicks and noone would want to start a fight with me, unfortunately I am still ugly and muscle didnt make me an overnight fighter so I just train by myself and jump whenever someone asks me to get off the bench. Sure I thought the muscle would help but it didnt against someone who actually is a fighter, I will never mouth off to that girl again.
Listening to my older brother and sisters calling me a skinny Ethiopian every single day--I can still hear them calling me it to this day. In 7th grade, got a weight set and weight gainer for Christmas when all the other kids were getting the newest Nintendo. I ended up be one of the strongest kids in High school (at least in bench and back then, not many kids lifted), and weighed in around 225ish by 22 years old at 5'9". I eventually went from the skinny kid to getting kind of fat looking in my mid 20's until I had a revelation and realized I looked like shit. I hit my leanest, fittest point on my 30th bday and have been dieting ever since. The sad part now is my son is in 7th grade and he is chubby. My older daughter calls him fat every time she gets mad at him and it pisses me off. I told him to get a weight set for Christmas so he can workout at home hoping he had the same mentality as myself and was motivated for change, but he doesn't want it like I did. I took him to the gym earlier this year but he is too young, I may have to try again.
Edit: I just wanted to add that I remember field day and getting all of those ribbons. I was always one of the fastest kids in school. And then in middle school, I loved going after the presidential fitness awards; I did the most pullups in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade--that's when being skinny paid off.
+1 for being a good role model for your son. And most of us men get REAL motivated when girls enter into the equation. Once he wants a girl, your son will LIVE in the gym.
i was 19 yo, a lazy mofo skinny fat and loosing my hair, i really didn't accept my self as i was... my brother older then me was going to the gym from some months and his body was changing in front of me, so when he asked me "do you wanna come with me?" i asked istantly "YES!". Since i hit the gym i decided to become the best version of myself. +1 for the story lol
Was fat in middle school with acne and glasses. Took a lot of verbal abuse growing up after transferring to rougher school district in 5th grade. I was into baseball and football however, so I leaned on that for confidence. I got my first bench in 6th grade I believe. I wanted to improve how I looked to avoid some of the verbal abuse, and improve in athletics.
It slowly worked and by high school I was an All State Defensive lineman signing a letter of intent to play NCAA football. Was still self conscious due to the verbal abuse I took at a young age...that shit leaves a mark for sure, but muscles definitely helped the confidence.
Fast forward to today and I still lean on size at 6'3" 255ish lbs at 38 yrs old. Wouldnt do anything different. Weightlifting helped me through tough times, and continues to do so.
I actually still have some of my field day ribbons:)
Great story as well. Me likes.

That story is way more interesting than mine...I do it for the karma!!! Lol, now that's the true slow gains!!
Awesome story mate+1
I started weight lifting because after roughly ten years of boxing my gym closed down,I did go to other boxing gyms but they just weren't the same......so a mate suggest I start training with him as apposed to doing nothing and I instantly felt in love with it. I'm never going to be the next Mr Olympia but I love training and everything about it...
Shaking like leaf when I leave.
Lifting till I feel like throwing up.
Most of all the feeling of accomplishment after every gym session it makes me a better person in all aspects of my life ;)
Yes..... I like working out just for the sake of working out.... nothing like a good pump!
Definitely brother ;)
Great story! Fuck you Tommy!! I started because back in my junior and senior year of high school. Most of my buddies were all bigger than me. Hell im only 5'8. They would always tell me that I'll forever be small. Well now I'm 36 and 225lbs. They all have giant beer bellies and my arms are bigger than their fucking quads. BOOM BITCHES
LOL... Hell yes!!
