What’s the dumbest thing you believed when you first started lifting?

ad

I thought sweating meant losing more fat so I'd wear a sweat belt, and hoodie to lift, and do cardio with. I was suffocating for no reason.

Also used to believe I had to eat every two hours to put on the most muscle. Would bring a shake or can of tuna with me everywhere.

That some pros were natty... and that supplements were sometimes as effas gear --

Drexyl's picture

C’mon bro, that “Amino Fuel” that Twinlab put out in the late 1980’s was the shit! Fucked up citrus flavor…

Scrawny-to-not's picture

That there was a magic window post workout that I needed to get my protein in to make gains.

press1's picture

24 to 36 hours after training a muscle its protein synthesis levels are at the highest, meaning it will absorb and use more amino acids than any other time.

irongame427's picture

He’s referring to the “anabolic window”. That Magical hour or so after training where your muscles will absorb the most protein and protein synthesis is elevated. Or so we believed many years ago. I don’t care, I still have my shake as soon as I finish lifting. It’s so ingrained in me at this point i feel like my workout was wasted if I don’t lol. and then a real meal 1hr post workout.

press1's picture

Ahh right Lmao - thing is you always instinctively know what your body needs when it wants it such as carbs or protein or both, and the main thing you always crave after a proper session is a protein shake isn't it!!! So I would argue that of all times the natural desire for it is highest right after lifting. I mean last thing you want is a glass of water isn't it LMAO I always go Protein shake, Simple carb based food with protein, Carbohydrate based drink. Then often go out for an hour and then ready to come back and eat a proper meal. Plus if I didn't get some nice liquid protein after training my stomach acid would likely burn a hole through my stomach and throat!!! Lol

Scrawny-to-not's picture

Fair, but i meant like within an hour something or I'd be losing out on gains so I had a shake ready to go in the gym bad haha
Some stupid bro science that was going around

flounder's picture

Too much weight; too many workout days; not enough food. I just fell in luv with the gym (cuz it felt right to be there). After a bit I learned to luv the feel, not the place.

press1's picture

When I was younger and tried lifting as many days of the week as possible, I would just end up feeling shit and training in general became much less enjoyable. There is simply no way that your body can recover optimally with no rest days.

bulkzane's picture

100% even if I feel fully fine some days the workout will be trash from not having rested in a while. It’ll creep up on you without realizing.

Milfpounder's picture

I agree buddy. I'm not a fan of whole weeks off like some folks are, and I'm not knocking them at all, but if I'm grinding hard for a good long while I usually end up gaining quite a bit of I take 3-4 days to recover. Plus I'm getting pretty old.

Pumped_'s picture

I used to think that the receptors get too wet and you have to take a break and let them dry out. Or increase the dose because you get used to the current dose like street drugs

Bill1976's picture

I still don’t fully u see stand why you seem to stall after 6 weeks or so. I notice when I take now vitamins l carnitine seems like the receptors actually do uoregulate and I get bigger

Wildling's picture

Protein shakes. Whole foods and anabolic are the only things that work.

Don’t doubt the sweating thing means more weight loss. Higher internal temp pushes more blood.

Two things, I can’t look like that without drugs, and I can look like that with drugs.

Riot28's picture

Good lord where do I start.
"Lift until you have absolutely nothing left in the tank". This only leads to zero recovery and injuries
"Eat enough to make a prized pig jealous". Got fat.
"Carbs are just as important as protein". My family on both sides has diabetes and thyroid issues. Our bodies take longer to process carbs than the DMV takes to call your number.
"Gear will get you shredded". No a proper diet will

I could go on if I thought about it for more than 5 seconds

Man that Mike Israel guy is one weird Motherfucker!

He was on this program I was watching on Netflix last night all about Ozempic and the huge effects its having on society, he was acting like is he some special prized Bodybuilder and clearly promoting himself at the same time. Sorry but that is one TICK Blinking WEirdo LMFAO Honestly after watching him go on for a few minutes I began feeling like it was passing on to me - I had to fast forward in the end ....

I noticed he calls himself Doctor also - Is he actually a qualified Doctor as I can't see it??

Squatch710's picture

He has a doctorate in sports science from a college. I would say it discredits the place that gave it to him more then anything. His doctoral thesis was jiberish him being granted a doctorate is proof to me nobody read it. He is good at teaching basic fitness practices like any other coach with a YouTube page pushing training programs and diets.

Why is that dumb? Love that generous jolly fucker

Min Diesel's picture

Bro my parents told me all them shitz were fake when i was 7. You’d think thatd be a devastating blow to a 7 year old. Younger me figured out very quickly that information was power, and that those presents were still gonna have to keep coming with or without Santa if they wanted me to keep my mouth shut to my lil friends.

Milfpounder's picture

My mom caught me jerking off one time and told me jerking off is bad and Santa Claus is fake all in the same sentence. I was devastated

Squatch710's picture

Wait jerking off is bad and Santa isn't real? What the actual fuck.

Wow similar experience bro. So one Christmas Eve I stayed up late and caught Santa fucking Mum under the mistletoe. She made up some bullshit story that it was my uncle, but there’s no way uncle Dave would be fucking mum after I’d just given him a reach around for a train set. The lies our parents came up with to keep us happy.

Scrawny-to-not's picture

Jesus christ hahahahaha that one got me

Milfpounder's picture

Good ol uncle Dave and the ol "train set for a reach around" schtick. Gotta love it.

Mines more of a crazy story that I believed from another person I knew back when I was 17 and they were a year older at 18. Within my circle of friends at the time were 2 twin brothers, one already lifted weights for 2 to 3 years and looked pretty good as he was only about 5'6 but of natural mesomorphic build so he looked good, broad etc. His brother also kind of had the same bone structure but was skinny as hell even though he lifted, no muscle anywhere and acted like a complete dumb knob LOL So the little brother went off into the Army and returned home 18 months later after a tour. I swear this guy looked FUCK ALL like he did when he left, and he returned as this HUGE thick armed, broad as fuck looking Bodybuilder. None of us could believe what we were seeing - the change was just unreal. It even had me wanting to sign up if thats what the Army did to you LMAO All of us countless times asked what his secret was and of course all he ever said was 'Creatine' Lol

Well as you can imagine, for the next 2 weeks I've never ingested as much grainy, nasty, stomach churning creatine monohydrate in all my life. Constantly shitting water out on the bog and feeling nauseous to the point where I decided he must just be a better responder than me. Clearly that Lying fucker was on some nice Testosterone and Deca injections as soon as he got into the barracks looking back now.

Milfpounder's picture

We've all been bamboozled by someone like that.

"What you on?"

"Protein and read the Bible 2 hrs a day".

"Oh..."

The harder and more you worked out the bigger and stronger you would get.
If you have an ache or pain walk it off, shake it off and work through it. That your body would get used to it.

Likewise!
Even when a teen, I thought it was a intensity thing. I have always lifted like there are demons inside me, screaming to get out. But its intensity, food, recovery, roids Lol

That I could build a magazine-cover body just by training the way they train and eating what they eat.

What I didn’t realize is there are two massive pieces most people don’t talk about:
1. The juice.
2. Genetics … which might be even more important.

Back then, people genuinely thought those guys were natural. The worst thing they supposedly took was creatine and protein powder. LMAO.

Meanwhile… cadaver GH and all kinds of “special supplements” were already in the game.

We were out here thinking it was chicken, rice, and hard work.

Reality check hits different when you’ve been in the game long enough.

For sure - a lot more than gear in the end.

Bill1976's picture

I thought of if I lifted more and more I would grow and I thought three meals a day was enough. I got lucky and a bodybuilder made me his project in prison.
NO HOMO!!!
But was so skinny everybody said I would never get jacked. He said bullshit. And helped me out.

liverpool_96's picture

When I was a teenager, there was this huge dude (at least 260lbs with about 18% bodyfat) in the gym so I approached him and asked him how he got so big. Now I was relatively new and naive to the world of anabolics and this brother tells me it's all the beans and rice he eats. I asked him to clarify what kind of beans - thinking it'd make a difference - and I got the answer of Heinz beans. Suffice to say I lasted about 6 days before deciding it wasn't for me. Looking back maybe he had some secret ingredient to his beans and rice, like a sprinkling of superdrol with every meal.
