Tennis Elbow
ad
I'm assuming the stabbing pain on the outside part of my elbow is Tennis Elbow. I find that if I rest it by not curling for a month or two (I hate having to do that) the pain goes away. Then when I start up working out again the pain will gradually come back. I see the straps and bands that they sell for tennis elbow and have seen some veterans at the gym wearing them. Are they good to wear? What brands or type should I get if they are good? Any suggestions on how to stop this pain from happening? I've read online alot of stuff but figure I need to ask my brothers and sisters here on the forum.
ps. Occurs almost exclusively when I curl a bar.

Cortisone shots helped, My Ortho said to wear strap for prevention.....Seems to work good. No flare ups since shots/strap/stretching described by Greg..
Sugar is an antagonist for inflammation too. I've battled tennis elbows and tendinitis in my wrists for a good while. Eliminating sugars as much as possible made a pretty big difference for me. Getting it out of my coffee was the hardest. Caffeine isn't a great contributor either, but I have my priorities.
i use penetrex they sell it on amazon its a cream
For me the tennis elbow strap didn't help at all. I had couple cortisone shots (separate occasions) which did help for a good while, but eventually wore off. I've found the stretches that Greg mentioned below help some, but an anti inflammatory like diclofenac seem to be the most help for me. Also icing it after a workout. Nothing has made mine go away completely. Dumbell curls are the most painful for me, but i work through it.

i dont have these but i really want some!
I had the same issue once. These exercises worked. As well as using lighter weights and some time off.
I tried the brace and it did not help. A physical therapist had me bend my wrist as far as I could with elbow bent and then without moving my wrist, lock my elbow as shown.
Absolutely these exercises here help, my therapist had me doing them and it was painful as hell at 1st, then got so much better.
Also stick with dumbbells until they stop hurting. When you do go back to the bars ( ez curl or straight), at the end of your set instead of just dropping the bar, slowly unfurl your wrists and let the bar hang for a couple seconds before dropping it. I know it sounds crazy, but you will be surprised.
Thanks!! I will try that!
RustyhookerI switched from straight bar to ez curl and it was better. Medium weight and sets for pump vs heavy to just go heavy. You try glucosamine combo, fish oils etc?
Hey Rusty! Love the Red! Anyways, I haven't tried that. Maybe I should. I do use the ez curl bar. Like I mentioned in the previous reply in this thread I do lock out my elbows since for all these years I thought it was good to do my curls in a strict way. Have I been doing them wrong all this time?
RustyhookerMaybe not necessarily wrong, just maybe wrong for you. The "pill" on the reverse side of elbow stops hyper extension but is bout the size of an eraser. After I broke both elbows, I too had to make odd adjustments.
quit snapping them elbows (locking out).
Oh boy, I'm gonna get a ton of flak from you guys but I love to do my sets super strict. I stand straight and lower the bar full on and then curl up in a controlled way. Is that why I messed up my arm? I thought that going anything but full extension was cheating. Been doing weights for over 30 years and can't believe I may have been doing them wrong all this time.
Don't get me wrong full extension is good, (When controlled). But you don't want to be lowering the weight and let it snap straight at the bottom... Like you see alot of guys doing with way to much weight.
A great way to get full extension is to flex your tri's at the bottom of a curl.
Try some tb500
I'll look it up! Thanks!
Use ice pack 15-20 min three times a day. Ibuprofen for pain. Look into getting a TENS unit. I picked one up for $40 on line. DMSO works well for some people.
Thanks!
