Luxury watches
I’ve always wanted a Rolex. I know some will consider that a retarded purchase but I’m attracted to the quality craftsmanship and timeless style and class of a Rolex. Everyone has an Apple Watch; I want something different and that makes a statement about who I am.
I’m a fairly active guy and intend to wear the shit out of it and beat it to death. As many of you know we’ve been working on having our first child. I’d love to buy a Rolex to commemorate conceiving and then gift that watch to them on their 21st birthday. Kind of a heirloom, legacy thing.
I’ve been looking at a Submariner or Explorer. Anyone have any experience with high end watches? Any pointers or suggestions would be awesome. I know there are some discerning gentlemen here so I suspect I’m not the only one with expensive taste in nice stuff lol.

Fossil for life.
Bigun2Hahaha!! My wife always tried to get me to wear a Fossil. I always feel like I’m 14 again though. To me that’s the “nice” watch from when I didn’t know any better.
Rolex is amazing. Like you said, Great craftsmanship. I have a watch that is like the submariner, made by Omega. Half the price and still exceptional. Omega Speedmaster. Check it out
The Rolex's are nice but realistically most of us wear a smart watch these days. It would be kind of tacky to wear one on both wrists no? Get a stainless steel apple watch if you do anything physical for a living. The aluminum ones will get smashed.
Bigun2Great idea. I have a Apple Watch so I just ordered a Stainless Steel band off Amazon for it. Guess that can hold me over until I get a Rolex lol.
AnonWe will not entertain the idea of smart watches in the same conversation discussing COSC chronometers!
I love a beautiful high end gold watch bro, but I have gotten hooked on my apple watch.
Bigun2Hahaha!! Hey, I never wanted it. My wife bought the smart watch for me bc I’m bad about putting my phone on silent and missing her calls and texts for a week lol.
Anon;)
I meant get the stainless case apple watch. They have the harder emerald glass. But you can also get gold bands
Bigun2Ah, yea I misunderstood. I’m apprehensive about how nice a $10 stainless band off Amazon can be but I guess we’ll see.
AnonRolex submariner is the standard luxury tool watch. That's the one.
Can't beat on any automatic watch though. (Mechanism.) No worries, you'll become 'watch aware' quickly enough. Depending on your jeweler PAY FOR ANY INSURANCE THEY OFFER AT ANY COST. You can't walk around with 8-10k on your wrist uninsured and warranties ONLY COVER WORKMANSHIP, not abuse.
Also remember automatic chronometers require maintenance every 2-5 years, depending on the watch. That's out of pocket too.
No better purchase than a watch to carry who you are - your history - through the generations.
Bigun2The submariner is just sexy. Not overly flashy, but makes a statement none the less.
AnonExactly...Rolex has spent the past 100 years doing one thing, exactly right, better than anybody else.
Molinin302This is where I am with it, I've been putting some cash aside for it and child support gets relief in October. I look at is as an investment. God forbid I'm in a bind, no matter what kind, I can say "hey, this is top of the line Pierre De la Petit, I paid 20k for it, help me?". Or offer up even a "low end" Rolex. It's a recognized and respected brand. Might get a gun off your head, I'd take the chance with the Rolex.
Buy a Hublot watch my man, they are way more sexier than a overly faked Rolex. I’m a big fan of timepieces but when it’s a toss up between a dirtbike or a commemoration watch the dirtbike will alway win.
Bigun2The Hublots are too flashy for my taste. I like understated class. Where the people who know just know what you’re wearing.
Have you looked at the whole hublots’ line? Loads of understated and sophisticated pieces. There are pros and cons to each but I’m sure you’ll be over the moon with a Rolex bro.
AnonTHIS IS IMPORTANT....
Pay full money for new watch from authorized dealer. The fakes are really, REALLY good these days. It's a whole industry unto itself.
Molinin302Exactly, jeweler. Rolex is a brand that's known and respected. Would hate to see it happen, but that brand name can get you out of any kind of pinch. Monetary or otherwise. Jeweler.
rolex yachtmaster w/platinum bezel
Bigun2You have good taste in watches, sir!
I have a breitling superocean 44. Very nice watch that won’t break the bank.
Bigun2The Superocean reminds me a lot of a Submariner, except its about 50% less expensive lol. Beautiful watch, bro.
If you’re sticking with Rolex the new explorer ii is really nice.
Bigun2Sooo nice!!! The Sea Dweller is another beautiful choice. I think it's down to Explorer, Explorer ii, Submariner or Sea Dweller for me. Just got to narrow it down.
Sorry, I suck! My discerning qualities, tell me to put that money in a 529k. Unless your just loaded with bread.
It is an absolutely beautiful idea though, but what if you have twin little girls???
AnonNot everything has to be logical...leave some room for luxury and passion Halsey.
Bigun2Guess I’ll have to buy my wife a couple Rolex’s ;)
I guess I should have mentioned it in the op but were fiscally secure. We aren’t millionaires but we’re working on it. I’ve put 10% in a 401k since I was 18. Now my contributions are maxed out per the IRS limit each year. We have ample emergency fund/s and no debt aside from the house. We’re in good shape financially. I wouldn’t spend the rent $ on a Rolex lol.
Also, my wife is 110% on board with the purchase, so that helps. She wants a GLA450 for a push present lol.
Molinin302Been looking into one myself, I'll be going oyster, date just or explorer. Once it's in the budget, not quite yet lol, I'm ok with 6-8K. A Rolex is a Rolex, and they don't lose value.
Bigun2All really good choices. And I completely agree, it's not like you're going to lose $ on the deal. A Rolex will be valuable until the end of time.
