Do the cheap heart rate monitors work?

ad

Starting to take my cardio a bit more seriously and it seems a monitor is in order. They vary massively in price on Ebay, but is there any real difference in accuracy?

I don't care what it looks like or if it has 1.5 million different functions (I can barely use my fucking phone) as long as the rate monitor is reasonably accurate and cheaper the better as I'm only going to break it/lose it anyway.

[edit] Looking through them I've noticed some come as a wrist watch with a separate chest strap transmitter and others are just the wrist watch.

You want the strap one. This can also be a benefit to you why you are lifting. You can keep your heart rate up between sets and master your recovery rate. You will find you try harder to get to the next set in time and you could burn 10-15 calories per minute. Your lifts will become stronger as you get used to it. For heavy lifts you can monitor your rate for optimal strength. You will also be able to measure yourself on a dietary level. In other words you will know your energy based on your heart rate and diet the day of and before your work out. I live and breath by mine. The benefit of working out this way is you can get a good cardio routine just in your lift if you change your plan a little and less time running on a treadmill.
