Be warned!!! Health Care coverage may increase.

ad

I was told by my Supervisor to submit my yearly health exam stats to my insurance provider. Of course I did as I was told, but in the back of my head I was thinking this was a good thing. My insurance premiums will go down and I will get more money in my pocket. I figured being a serious weightlifter and having healthy stats I would be good. Blood pressure was 130/80, cholesterol was within limits, resting heart rate 75. No tobacco products or alcohol problems to speak of. Excellent diet, and my company sponsored fitness program that helps pay for my gym membership. I have to submit a report each quarter on the amount of times I went to the gym. 20+ times a month is considered excellent. All information was submitted in January. So today I check the mail and its from my insurance company. This letter is to inform me that I'm considered an at risk client and that my premiums will be increased. WTF!!!! Is this even legal. So I call the 1800 number and wait 35 minutes to talk to an agent. She reviews my information and says the insurance company considers me moderately obese due to my age 36, height, 5'11", weight 248 lbs. She said the company considers a male at my dimensions should be between 170 lbs to 185 lbs. This of course is the universal body weight scale these companies always use. I have not seen 170 lbs since high school. Hell I have decent abs showing at 248 lbs with a 34 inch waist.

So my company is looking to place more responsibility on the individual instead of using flat rates for all it's employees covered under the insurance. I'm told since I gave the information to the insurance company willingly its on me and not the company. However, my rat bastard supervisor who told me to do it never sent his information in. He flat out looked at me and said "I never told you to do that." So I filed the grievance against my supervisor and told him my tummy hurt and I needed a couple of weeks off to rest.

Moral of this story is watch what you say to insurance companies. Just because you have abs at 230 lbs doesn't mean you will be considered ideal for them. They are looking for any way to get information on us and use it to increase our premiums. Oh and if a supervisor or boss tells you to do it. Check your employers operating procedures and see if its required. If its not, respectfully tell them no. In my case the operating procedures say I don't have to disclose any information to my insurance company and its a violation for a supervisor to require you to do it. I might be getting that promotion sooner then expected this year. LOL.

You can request a retest and have them take account into body fat. If you request it during the physical they will take body fat into consideration and if your body fat is low they will adjust the rating. Also make sure who ever takes the physical notes your build/documents & adds it to the file.

They use a "rule of thumb" process and typically you'd need to fail 3 out of 6 requirements to have your premium adjusted upward (in my case $40 per pay period). I agree it sucks. I asked my HR person what would happen if... and he said you can get retested in 6 months (i.e. $240 later)

They lady I spoke to on the phone told me I could get retested in 6 months to. My rates increased around the same as yours. I just feel like I'm being punished for pushing myself in the gym working my ass off. The only saving grace is that they will accept skin caliper BF tests by the doctor. I'm going to have him do an official test for me since the test I get from the gym trainer does not count.

Well my weight will go down to around 225 lbs for summer. But no where near 170 lbs. Hell even at that weight I'm 55 lbs over their ideal weight.
