Npc figure goal-soliciting advice

I competed about 9 years ago with a terrible coach. Since then, I've become a CPT and work as a personal trainer now. However, I do not specialize in bodybuilding, and I want to compete again. At the moment I ate like an asshole and got fat.
I'm
5'6"
163-166lbs (varies based on menstrual cycle)
Somewhere around 25% bodyfat (based on handheld BIA)

I'm a pretty fluffy looking trainer, so I know I'm at least 30lb over stageweight. I am looking at competing maybe next April. My current plan has been dieting down now since I've got so much to lose.

Had a conversation today with a coworker who bodybuilds (and coached a few ifbb) who said that since I want to compete on figure, I should build now and start dieting in January. I'm so fat already! Seriously?

Anybody else who competes have a take on this? I'm fine if I have to look fat for longer (my motivation is not about looking good, its about wanting to be a great bodybuilder). But at the same time, thats going to make my prep even longer!

Lower your bodyfat first. If you start building with a higher percentage of bodyfat you will just get fluffier. Start with a lower bodyfat and you will proportionately build more muscle. Doesn't matter if you are male or female.

I don't see why you cant drop some of the fluff pretty quickly and then work on building from a place where the diet down isn't going to be so awful. Nothing sucks like going into a comp and you're at 20% ...

do a quick system reset .. drop your carbs to around 35 a day for two weeks .,. first week is all greens or vegetables ... no potatoes ... fat macros around 40 or 50 and drop protein to around 110 .. second week add in fruits on two or three days and one higher carb day at 125 .,.. go back down to 35 for the third week but give yourself 3 days at 125 ish ... taper carbs back in and continue to adjust macros back up slowly ... that should melt quite a bit of fat off

I ate it pre work out .,., I needed the pick up. the first few weeks SUCKED .. I ll never eat another damn piece of celery ... ever!

they wouldn't touch it and if my dogs won't eat it I certainly will not
