Female-specific Ketogenic Diet Issues

ad

Hi all,

Anyone who is bothered by the discussion of "monthly cycles" should probably stop reading now. You've been warned.

ANYWAY, I was looking for any insight/personal experience on a ketogenic diet's effect on menstrual cycles and, more importantly, the dreaded SPOTTING. According to reddit's xxketo forum its a pretty common occurrence, and one of the major reasons I can't stay on a ketogenic diet myself (the iron depletion + constant need for "feminine hygine products" 24/7 wasn't sustainable in my lifestyle). Has anyone here had any success in using "supplements" to treat this?

The best hypotheses I've heard on the subject boil down to estrogen in fat stores being released under ketosis messing with birth control pills something fierce. Has anyone tried anything with respect to (via supplements) reducing the production of (what is now excess) estrogen with any success? Anyone here have any insights?

Thanks!

Hi

In the initial periods of adaptation the release of FFA and the constant substrate utilisation change will cause these kinds of issues. Constant breakdown of FFA's in the blood are prooxidant and so you will find that takig a good selection of Anti Oxitants will help as it assists in moping up the fat oxidation by products.

How long have you been doing the diet?

[I am not female btw! - well not today anyway! :-) ]

I'm not on the diet at the moment because, due to the aforementioned problems, it wasn't really sustainable. That said, I was certainly out of the adaptation phase - even 3 and 4 weeks in (when my weight had stabilized after water weight loss and my energy had shot back up) I'd have nearly constant spotting issues.

Does FFA mean free fatty acid, or something else? I'm trying to get a better understanding of the biochemistry here.

that sounds pretty interesting and probably right on since fat cells absorb everything ... ... I have not had the issue myself .. haven't had a period in some .. ok lots of years.. six or so to ballpark it.. however, if it was me I might try some aromasin e3d day at 6.25mg ...
