TORN BICEPS!!!

ad

35 years of lifting and I tear a biceps on lat pulldowns??? I was doing about 245 on lat pulldowns... Not a super heavy weight for me, but not light ether. I was warmed up good---about 3 work-sets in, and it "popped"----I knew instantly it wasnt good. Today my inner bicep and tricep are black and blue. I'm not really sore, and I can actually curl light weights with no pain. But that blood-pool has me concerned.
I'm new to this, and not sure how serious they can be. I just started using my d-bol again and my entire body is pumed ALL THE TIME----never goes away, and I'm wondering if the biceps were just so gorged that it tore...???... I don't know. Maybe not enough water.
It's fucked up because I wasnt doing anything "wrong"... I warmed up good.... I had plenty of water (I think---maybe not).... and I wasnt going super heavy---although 245 is the entire stack at my gym----dont laugh.
So....if anybody has any suggestions or knows about possible thearpy, please chime in. I know often times torn biceps have to be surgically repaired. I cant imagine this is serious, but who knows. Right now, I'm just going with asprin, ice, light stetching in a few days, and push-only training.
FUCK......if my biceps deflate, I won't be shit. My arms are all I have....LOL.
Thanks!!!!!

As a Chiropractor once told me about my back the injury didn't really happen the day it popped. It happens over zillions of reps over years and then...pop; like my back! It simply goes that day for some reason, but its the cumulative effect.

The best thing to do immediately is rest it, and get a professional opinion. Hopefully it will heal up on its own, though it may never look quite the same,

I've had a bad tear on my left pec for 30 years. It looks like gyno, but i can lift pain free; so no need to fix unless i was competing!

something similar happened to my left quadricep. i posted pics of it. i thought i tore a tendon too. but i didnt. it swelled up around the knee area and all over my quad. i had bruising up and down my quad and even on my calf. it turned out to not be a tear and i was squatting again in a month. you may be in luck. take it easy and get it checked out!

If you really tore the muscle you would even have a visible divot or damage to the muscle itself. I have a torn pec and you can see when I flex it where the tear was. It has a crease sort of. This was a bad injury and also pooled blood up that ended up with bruising in the bicep area even though it was a pec injury.

Welcome to the old fart cripple club Goth, lol jk. When i tore my pec tendon there wasn't any pain so be careful and don't lift because there isn't pain. I had blood pooled and one doc told me to rub arnicare gel on the pooled blood it gets the toxins and pooled blood gone a lot quicker. I didn't get surgery and was able to lift about 6 months afterward with chest. I train other body parts up until then and it didn't effect my pec. If I were you I would at least go get it looked at ASAP. All the ole timers tell me to soak it in cider!!!

What you described does sound like a tear of the tendon of long head of the biceps. The tendon can weaken with years of constant overuse and it may fray over time with the actual injury occurring doing something simple when it eventually tears. A tear can be complete or partial and the symptoms and function you are left with will depend on the degree of injury. You may or may not have pain. Other findings you may notice to verify that is what has happened include the bruise on the upper arm like you described, weakness in the shoulder or elbow, difficultly rotating your arm from palm down to palm up position, or a bump in the contour of the front of the arm because the tendon is no longer holding the muscle in place normally. If you can still use the arm its likely that you can because the tendon of the other bicep muscle- the short head is still intact. Handling this injury depends on the degree of the tear and where the tear has occurred.

For tears at the shoulder, two tendons attach the biceps muscle to the shoulder: the "long head" tendon that attaches the muscle to the top of the shoulder’s socket and the "short head" that attaches it to the shoulder blade. This injury in some cases may heal without surgical treatment- with ice and rest like you are doing although often you might never regain all of the arm’s original strength. Surgery to reattach the tendon is safe and usually with few complications. It can return nearly all of your arm strength and function, and a re-tearing of the repaired tendon is rare. The rehabilitation does take time- usually at least a couple months.

A biceps tear at the elbow is different. While two tendons attach the biceps muscle to the bone at the shoulder, only one tendon attaches it to the elbow. Distal tears are much less common but when they happen are usually from heavy lifting like bodybuilding. When this tendon tears, however, the tear is usually complete and the muscle is separated from the bone even though you may still be able to move your arm ok. The results of repair of this tendon are also good. But these injuries scar the tendon within a couple weeks and make surgery not an option so if you have a distal tear and want full function then you need to get to an orthopedic doctor soon.

They will examine you and likely will get an MRI to confirm the diagnosis and figure out the extent of injury and determine your options. So i would go see the orthopedics in case it is a distal tear and if you still want it repaired they can offer you that. Im sorry to hear about your injury and hope its minor and you heal well.

Thats a fantastic post and I appreciate that.
Just for the recoerd, I have decided that I am going to stray from heavy weihts and rely on lighter weight with high intensity teqniques like drop sets, forced reps, rest-pause sets, and pre-fatigue sets.
Thank you very much.

Regardless, you need to have it looked at to see how bad the tear is. Buddy at the gym tore his recently, he said he could curl and everything too, but hold your arm out in front of you and twist your hand back and forth once. You will see. He also said you don't want to wait if it truly is torn. Good luck bro.

7gothic's picture

I agree.... should have it examined. Would hate to fuck my biceps up. The good news is they will respond quickly once I train them again.

Fuck...and I had just hit 20" arm barrier last year too, and was closing in on 21"

Pale's picture

Yea that totally sucks. I have been dealing with a bad left shoulder, I was hoping going back on would quickly heal it like has before but Wednesday I took my son to the gym and somehow I ended really pissing it off, worse than it was. I think it is done fooling with me. I am going to stay out of the gym for a couple days and pray to Odin it responds.

fusebox's picture

Idk. I'd go get it looked at. At least you know if it does require surgery I'm sure you could talk grrl into wearing her nurses outfit again

I avoided distal bicep tendon surgery last year with 4 IU / day GH for 3 months along with one of the glucosamine and chondroitin products. Tear was just about 50%. Surgeon said to give it a try before he cut the tendon off and bolted it back on the bone. It worked. Might work with muscle tear as well.

indabasement's picture

I had 90% distal tear and had to get it bolted back on like you said. Rehab was no more than 3 months. Arm is normal size but strength never came back 100%.

7gothic's picture

If I had a tendon tear, would I know it??? I mean, would the pain be pretty intense? Bicep not useable?
Right now, the pain is mild.

Catalyst's picture

Not necessarily. First time I had shoulder surgery I had completely torn through the subscapularis tendon. Minimal pain, 3/10 at worst.

Make sure you get an MRI done.

7gothic's picture

Thanks!

Dickkhead's picture

The pain would reflect what percent of the tendon is torn. Most biceps tendon tears are proximal (shoulder) in non athletes and distal (forearm) with strength athletes. If you can still use the arm it does not sound like you tore it up too bad. See if you can lay off the pulling exercises for a week and see how you feel.

The only thing that is definitive in assessing the damage is an MRI, but with mild pain, I would feel optimistic it will heal on its own. If it's not showing marked improvement in 2 weeks, then I would see a specialist (orthopedic surgeon).

7gothic's picture

I can actually use it pretty well, so that's encouraging to hear.

Pale's picture

I would strongly disagree with you on waiting two weeks to have it looked at bro. If it is a distal tear time is of the essence. If it needs surgery it needs to be done as soon as possible.

Dickkhead's picture

If it is a small tear it will not need surgical repair. If it is a larger tear, he would be in agony. My distal tear was close to 50% and it healed with medication although the surgeon really wanted to operate. Shocking. Smile I'm glad I didn't go for the operation - I would have been out a year.

Just as an aside, I ripped up my arm pretty good all from picking up a 30 lb dumbbell someone had left on the preacher curl bench and putting it back in the rack. Didn't take much at all. My orthopedic surgeon tore his back to shreds and was in traction for months (in the days they used traction) from bending over and picking up a pine cone.

Pale's picture

I am in a very back damaging trade myself. You would be surprised how many guys blow their backs out bending over for something as simple as a utility knife. When you feel the heat run down your leg or something similar to that you are done for a good long time.

I totally hear you on the Dr's always wanting to do surgery too, it is true. But that said with the amount of bruising he is describing I think getting it looked at early is in his best interest. I know it sucks and it will cost a couple grand for a MRI, but if it is a 100% tear time is not on his side.

Dickkhead's picture

If it is torn through, yes, time is of the essence. Hours count. But, dang, if it's that bad he wouldn't have any use of the arm at all and morphine would just take the edge off. Your right, he should get it checked out in any case. I'm being overly optimistic perhaps.

Pale's picture

My bro at the gym said his didn't hurt either. It wasn't until they did the arm out hand flip deal that he realized how fucked up it was. His was completely tore.

Try tb 500 to promote faster healing if it doesn't come down to surgery.
