TMJ TMD

Has anyone out there had this over there training career. It's strained jaw muscles which effects your head neck and shoulders aswel. Any info on this would be grateful as I've suffered this for the last 4 years and stopped training because of the pain. Over 2 months ago I started getting some pain relief and started training again which has been no problem until a couple of days ago. I'm in the process of getting my bite fixed at the orthadontist and have a gumsheild for through the night to which I've been chewing continuously. Has anyone any ideas for relaxing these particular muscles around the shoulders neck and head area.

Your treating it the only way that I know how myself. I'm sure your orthodontist will have some tips
I used to get really bad tension headaches when I was younger...
Instead of muscle relaxants or pain killers the doctor recommended I try a good antihistamine first.
Piriten I think it was called you will feel a hell of a lot better the next morning instead of taking muscle relaxants or strong pain killers and less chance of your body building up a tolerance to it being an allergy treatment
RustyhookerIve seen boxing mouth pieces work in the gym for a long time. Tmj sucks.
Worked with Davie Orthodontist who used it quite successfully on TMJ patients. And on my sore shoulder once.Since acupuncture is good for chronic pain, I wouldn't be surprised if it worked well.
I hd tmj from age 16 to 51. At 51 I could finally afford the dental work to open up my bite and repair the effects of many years of grinding. Instant cure.
According to the dentist who worked on my teeth, grinding is a subconsious attempt to even out your bite. And sure enough, a few months after my bite was corrected I stopped grinding at night.
Hopefully your dentist can improve your bite enough without rebuilding your whole mouth, which is really expensive. I really think that approach will do the job in the long run. Xanax for more than a week or two can get habit forming really quick!
Your right bro I'm in the process now i have a brace in at min. I've had a splint in also have two gumsheilds which are chewed bad I'm starting to realise it's a hard habit to get out of but I so hope your right when you say that when my bite is corrected it will go away cause as you'll know yourself it's a long road of endless suffering .when I had to stop training at the end of 2007 I thought my life was over 3 MRI scans later still pain and pill popping when I got back training 2 Months ago I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I'll be trying to get Xanax ASAP I hope the do it here in the uk and your right wheels it's cost me £7800 to get me to where I am now and I've still alot to do. thanks for your info it's putting my mind at rest knowing it's just not me and there is a way out cheers guys
good luck bro. Let me know if you get relief from the meds
Hey wheels, sounds like delta's issue is more like yours with a screwed up bite. I actually have nothing wrong with my bite, I just grind and clench my jaw from stress like a maniac. Havent had an issue since I did the xanax for a month and thats the only time I ever used it
My jaw clicks bad when I open my mouth very wide and have actually had it get stuck during orthodontist procedure. Last year I had real bad jaw pain in side that clicks and regular dentist said based on wear on my back teeth it looks like I clench my jaw and grind my teeth in my sleep and asked if I had a lot of stress which I do at times with my job. Anyway he gave me xanax for a month to calm me down and sure enough the teeth grinding stopped and so did the jaw pain. Not sure if yours is related in anyway but just thought I would offer the info.
I'll try xanax right away cause I'll try anything so I can keep training. Thanks bro your a saint
When my front teeth touch theres a fingers space between my back teeth. The orthadontist is going to build them up to touch eachother but I was training for 10 years before hand lifting weights grinding my teeth with a unbalanced bite. I've been on alsorts of painkillers that I'm now off but would love to find the right muscle relaxant to help me while it gets fixed so I can keep training
tread-mBrother my wife has tmj but not to your degree...yet. wonder if some muscle relaxers would help during the bite correction on occassion?
Yeh bro it's finding the right ones to stop me chewing in my sleep and not to strong that I can't drive to work. Thanks for your concern and info guys top class
