+ 2 Late night carbs...but "healthy" ones...

ad

So I'm an older fella, which means I gotta worry about every damn thing from liver issues, prostate problems, to cholesterol, and then of course general heart and cardiovascular issues. I have already done blood work and found out that I do indeed have high cholesterol (the bad kind), but otherwise, just about everything else is spot on. So I have been making a concerted effort to cut down on triglycerides like bacon (FUCK!!!) and take in a lot more fish for the fatty acids, but also fiber, which of course is a carbohydrate.

So the one thing I have never truly been clear about, and have tried to research but always wind up finding different opinions about, is, while I know I shouldn't be eating any carbs too late in the evening, what about when it is something like a bowl of shredded wheat (no sugar or anything added except milk)?

It's one of my weaknesses (probably not a terrible one) and I know it's packed in fiber but of course still a carbohydrate. So, good for my cholesterol, but also a carb that may do what other carbs do and turn into luggage late at night.

Would you say it is ok to eat a "snack" like this at night when you are trying to keep your body fat down as an older guy? Sometimes I just cannot f'ing sleep if I am hungry, so I HAVE to eat something. What about a snack like this?

I would love to hear and appreciate any input anyone has on this.

This is kind of a 2 part problem when it comes to cholesterol. For discussion let's say your either natural or trt. When bulking my ldl cholesterol creeps up from the over abundance of calories. It gets much worse the more junk food I throw in the mix, but even when I eat clean as fk it still goes up while bulking.

Now on a low calorie diet it always drops back down even with the occasional cheat meal.

When it comes to fat storage and late night carbs keep it in your macros and you should be fine. However keep in mind the carbs can be put to much better use at better times like pre/post work out. Or carb load at night if you have a heavy lift day in the morning.

One of my favorite treats at night is plain Greek yogurt with frozen blueberries and a little honey or agave syrup. Yum

zeb0312's picture

Long as it's good carbs I don't see a big issue because remember you're still burning calories while you're sleeping, body is repairing hair still grows nails still grows hell heart still beats so calories are being used.....

I eat oatmeal, cream of rice, white rice, purple potatoes, red potatoes, just to name a few, it at different times during the day.

I have noticed as I get older I can't eat the same shit I use to and get away with it.

I eat clean and alot for the most part, but also my body still likes a cheat meal and I have noticed the best time for that is my last meal of the night and I will wake up next morning and look better than I have all week.....

I think it's because all week long like I said I eat good and clean then that one cheat meal per week my body sucks it up. I can't get away with that all the time....

MAXIMUS666's picture

I'm definitely starting to feel less guilty, or concerned about it. I kind of was on the same wavelength as most everyone else here but it's good to confirm it. Thanks bud!

zeb0312's picture

Anytime big guy, good to see other peoples feed back on this and see different types of results on same foods and different results as well on same...

KEEP KILLING THAT SHIT

shiva4's picture

based on my knowledge I would say shredded wheat would be a decent carb containing food to eat at night. something else you may want to consider is preparing fridge oats. get a half cup of at oats and mix it with a fluid, water would be ideal for your situation. place it in the fridge 3 or 4 hours before you plan on eating it, or much sooner of its more convenient. let the oats become fully saturated with fluid so they are soft. you could mix up cinnamon in it too for flavor, plus it's been shown to assist in insulin sensitivity.
boom, then you have a complex carbohydrates containing snack before bed that contains fiber. this will help the carbs digest slower plus the cinnamon and you should be fairly safe.

edit: I'm basing this on my nutritional biochemistry knowledge, not from a competitor bodybuilder perspective.

MAXIMUS666's picture

I appreciate it and I like the idea, but I think the issue is that it's all about the incurable craving, you know what I mean? Don't ask me why, but I crave the hell out of a bowl of shredded wheat with milk. It's not like I'm saying, "Goddam I'd love a triple cheeseburger right now!" lol It's just this strange craving for something and while other things will sound good, it's just a simple, quick bowl of shredded wheat seems like it would be the least damaging late at night.

kibby's picture

I know exactly what you mean mate.... recently for no good reason I've been craving Ben and Jerry's cookie dough ice cream!!!!
To the point were I've got to have it no matter what.

MAXIMUS666's picture

Oh man, don't go putting Ben Jerry's into my head! Ice cream, especially some chocolate chip cookie dough, is another one of those gotta have it type things but I know how bad it is so I can usually refrain. Usually! But those times that I do give in...f'in Ben and Jerry themselves could be spoon feeding me that stuff straight from the factory and there still wouldn't be enough! lol

kibby's picture

Ben n Jerry's is awesome mate!!!!

You could maybe get away with weetabix mate? Or a cup of flaxseed and mixed berry?

Just things I eat now and then mate

The girlfriend buys cap'n crunch and golden grahams and all that stuff for the kids. That stuff is killing me. Never really used to get the munchies at night but when that stuff is around I do for some reason. lol

MAXIMUS666's picture

I live in Thailand and all those cereals are imports so they're outrageously expensive so I just refuse to spend $20 on a SMALL friggin box of Lucky Charms! Funny enough, because my kid has not grown up eating that crap she really has no idea about it but enjoys the shredded wheat that I eat! Just goes to show, if they don't know about it, they won't ask for it.

kibby's picture

Lol,
Honestly mate if it didn't run out I would just keep eating lol.
Definitely not fair when they can eat what they want and have no consideration for us lmfao

When that shit made it into the house while I was prepping it got dumped in the garbage as soon as I saw it. They learned not to keep cereal in the house when I am cutting.

I snack of walnuts and dates at night.

irongame427's picture

Honestly One of the times I got to my leanest I at 50g of carbs with every meal including my last one, always complex carbs though. Another thing, I had a very knowedabe coach set up my prep and he also preps one of our members on here with a pro tag, my last meal of the day was carbs and carbs only an with a shot of gh. Not even complex carbs, 3 bananas or 2 cups rice with soy sauce or some size baked potato. I ended up getting really sick 4 weeks into it but my friend followed the entire program and my god did he transform. Absolutely crazy transformation. Wish I still had the pics.

So I guess it could depend on the individual, we all react to foods and macros differently. But I've seen it work for a number of people. Give it a shot for 2-4 weeks, but make sure that's your only change you make so you know the effects If'any, are from the bowl of cereal. I like cereal at night myself, never a big fan in the morning but love it at night.

johnnyoldboy's picture

This is really interesting. Can you explain what the reasoning is behind the carbs and gh before bed? Just seems to defy conventional wisdom but if there is some good reasoning as to why I can eat some carbs before bed I'm all on board!!

MAXIMUS666's picture

Yeah man, most people crave some ice cream or some shit like that, but I just start fiending for a bowl of friggin shredded wheat of all things right before bed.

shiva4's picture

I'm totally with you on the bedtime bowl of cereal. every night I have a bowl of honey nut cheerios with rice milk that had a scoop of birthday cake flavored iso 100. it's amazing!

MAXIMUS666's picture

Really?? That is some crazy shit that I did not expect to hear. Again, this is one of those things that contradicts a lot of the other things I've researched but at the same time I don't doubt at all what you're saying as you're obviously not just making shit up.....but 2 cups of rice or a baked potato? Man, I'm not gonna lie, this sounds like something I would LOVE to try...just can't help but believe that it wouldn't work for me. But I sure as hell would be a happy guy trying it out! lol Thanks brother

XmadXscientist's picture

When you say he transformed do you mean in a leaned down sense or was it a pack on muscle type of plan for him? I'm curios to knew more details about this prep you and your friend did.

MAXIMUS666's picture

Hot chocolate?? lol Hell, that doesn't sound terrible at all! Might consider making that a ritual with my kid....as an excuse of course! ;-) Thank you for the advice brother

Makwa's picture

I actually get asked about carbs before bedtime quite a bit. Carbs at bedtime can be ok or they can really derial your efforts. Here are some rules of thumb to follow:

  1. If you do eat some carbs make darn sure you are taking in some slow digesting protein with them. Some of my favorite protein sources at night are cottage or non-fat plain greek yogurt with some berries I picked in the backyard, a nice chunk of turkey or grouse breast with some cottage cheese, turkey broccoli salad with a light vinegarette dressing or a shot of casein in almond or fairlife milk.

  2. If you are going to eat some carbs they have to be low GI. High fiber veggies would be best (see broccoli above). Definitely stay away from the breads and other high starch foods. You need to stick with the low GI high fiber carbs and not the high GI starchy ones so that you prevent an insulin spike before bed (unless you goal is to pack on some fat then go ahead and eat your breads and pasta). The last thing you want to do before going to bed is spike your insulin since you will then depress your IGF levels since they both compete for the same receptors.

  3. Keep your total carb intake under 25 grams. This should be fairly easy with using veggies for your carb source at night.

Bottom line is limit carbs at night as much as possible if trying to burn fat and definitely stay away from all high starch and high GI carbs which will blunt your IGF and limit gains.

Sooo....long story short I would probably avoid your late night snack of shredded wheat on a regular basis. I wouldn't sweat over it too much much though if you aren't prepping for a show. lol Sometimes it is just nice to put one or two bowls down.

shiva4's picture

excellent reply, brother. the low GI, high fiber and slow digesting protein is spot on. these will all slow the breakdown and absorption of the carbs

MAXIMUS666's picture

lol...yeah you nailed it. I ain't preppin for any shows but at the same time I already knew how bad carbs in the evening were, but I just didn't know how bad "good"carbs were compared to high GI carbs. I almost would never eat a big ass bowl of pasta before bed (unless in a drunken stupor ant therefore cannot be held accountable! lol)

And it's not a nightly thing but I gotta say, sometimes the urge at night is so damn strong to just throw back some kind of carbs and i figured a bowl of shredded wheat wouldn't be the worst thing in the world...but when you said about 25 grams....hahaha....shit. When I make a bowl of it, it's usually a good size bowl.

I appreciate it brother, pretty solid advice and while I'm at the age that I admit I am not going to give that shit up completely, I will say that I am going to definitely watch it a bit more. Thanks bud!
