+ 4 Karma Lottery

ad

So I was just thinking while having my daily browse on the board. What about a karma lottery for members who contribute to the site in a way that benefits the site or furthers the site in some way. I was thinking a monthly karma lottery. At the end of the month whichever suggestion or post that benefits the site the most gets the karma lottery for instance 10 karma.

Now if this is a shit idea please don’t take it out on my karma I’m already minus 10 for being silly which I totally own btw... I was minus 15 I’m clawing my way back and earning it. This idea seemed really good at 5am this morning when I was feeding the baby lol!!

I can see pros and cons. On the one hand it might encourage knowledgeable members who usually don't post much to share their knowledge and further enhance the site. On the other hand if a less than knowledgeable user were to post up and win it would slightly overstate thier PERSONAL knowledge level/value to the site. When I was a new member I typically associated karma points with knowledge. After some time I learned that was fat from always the case, but at the end of the day I feel that all karma needs to be earned. Maybe introduce a lottery or some other incentive program if contributions from knowledgeable vets goes way down, but for now I think that we are in good shape. Still not a bad idea and I don't see anything wrong with you suggesting it!

Bitcoin lottery sounds nice but might be considered illegal gambling.

Speaking from my experience on here so far - Having someone on 5 karma points that can't even vote thanking me for helping them with their training or my advice on which compound to go for, means 50 times more than an ADV member giving me 2 karma points any day of the week. The feeling that you get from seeing someone really genuinely happy because their training is going so well because of a little bit of my input means the world :))

Agreed. Karma comes and goes. As I recently found out). We’re here to help each other.

IrishMack's picture

Why? What is karma? Why is it so imporrant? How about just helping without a hand out? Its like taking a picture giving a dollar to a homeless guy so you can post it and everyone can see how great a person you are.

DfromPhilly's picture

I saw something on LinkedIn where the dude took a pic of a gas pump with $3.24 of gas, and then humble bragged about how he stopped the lady and paid for her full tank. If he was even telling the truth it kind of kills the niceness of it when you tell everyone about it.

IrishMack's picture

Its just sad in my opinion. Be Nice because you are not because you expect something. You go to work to have your hand out. I'm old school so I show respect.

press1's picture

I help others out because I want them to feel good and happy about themselves, not to better how I feel. Sure it feels great to see them happy but its merely a by product of what you are doing. Not disagreeing with you at all Irish.

IrishMack's picture

Right on.

DfromPhilly's picture

Agreed. The worst thing you can do after doing a good deed is brag about it or use it to make others think you’re some great person. Totally kills the good deed. Cuz then you did it for you, not for them. So it’s actually selfish then lol.

I’m with you 100%

Ozninjaguy's picture

In actual fact – we are all selfish. Whether a person does a ‘good deed’ (subjective notion), based on sympathy or empathy towards the recipient, it still has an element of self-gratification/reward involved. If a person does a ‘good deed’ – do they feel like shit after having done it? No, they feel good, therefore self-gratification is involved, that’s why they continue to do ‘good deeds’ – it’s about helping someone, but there is always some level of personal reward involved. No-one is truly selfless and ambivalent about their 'good deeds'. Some people brag about their ‘good deed/s’ for peer/general approval, others say nothing – but it’s still about the intrinsic reward from the action that is important to each.

Greg's picture

That's called love and many religions talk about it. "Give unto others and you will be rewarded ten fold".

"One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered."

Then there is the caveat warnings about your motive for doing good deeds. Your selfie doing a good deed will diminish your return.

Matthew 6:1-4
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Basically, the rewards of self fulfillment, grace, confidence/faith, and well being etc. are far greater rewards than your 5 minutes of fame or your facebook likes.

Ozninjaguy's picture

"Give unto others and you will be rewarded ten fold".

Isn't this still based upon the presumption/assumption of self-reward?

Greg's picture

Yes, but why do you paint it as a bad thing? You're conflating feeding your ego verse feeding your soul.

Isn't feeding yourself food a self-reward? Isn't taking care of your health a self reward?

If you read the quote from Matt, you are cautioned against feeding your ego, which does nothing for your mental health and well being, and encouraged to feed your soul which is important for a healthy life.

We are social creatures and survive best when we look out for each other.

Ozninjaguy's picture

Yes, but why do you paint it as a bad thing? You're conflating feeding your ego verse feeding your soul.

Painting it as a bad thing was not my intention. As I stated to a couple of guys - I was just philosophising about the whole notion. As for conflating feeding Ego VS feeding Soul - I don't believe in the notion of a Soul. Ego - or Self is all that exists as far as I am concerned. Thus the discussion.

Greg's picture

When I used the word soul in this case it simply means self; your mental and emotional state of being.

And I'm just chiming in on your musings trying to point out that we, as social animals, have a biological need to give and we are "rewarded" when we give properly. Just as we are "rewarded" when we have sex. If we are selfless in our lovemaking it's better still.

You sounded to me like you were focusing more on ego, less on self, or conflating the two. My attempt was to make clear that there is an important difference on how you give. One is selfish, the other is not. Giving of yourself is a selfless act. It's giving from the seat of love.

Ozninjaguy's picture

We are on the same page mate - I get what you are saying. I just like to get people thinking and sometimes to do that a person has to seem contrary. I guess that my point was: is there such a thing as a selfless act...or do all acts result in some form of self reward? I would argue - yes there is always an intrinsic self reward for any act, but the motivation to commit the act may be selfless.

For me, self and ego are essentially the same thing. I know that some claim that ego is only an element of the total 'self,' but I see them both as the same, and argued from that perspective.

DfromPhilly's picture

Isn't feeding yourself food a self-reward?

depends. Is it a Brazilian Steakhouse? ;)

Greg's picture

That's gluttony and clearly a sin... one I'm willing to go to hell for.

DfromPhilly's picture

Lol Agreed. And I’ll see ya there.

Virtual high five!

IrishMack's picture

Actually I was brought up to show respect, to hold open doors, to assist without thinking why. I never pause and think about my own self righteousness, I just hope the person I help reciprocates. Satisfaction comes in many forms but not once for me does it come from assisting people in every day life. Now when it comes to women well yes I expect something in return lol.

Ozninjaguy's picture

Actually I was brought up to show respect, to hold open doors, to assist without thinking why

Me too, and if we delved deeper into that conditioning, we would find that it is to please whoever conditioned us, and therefore feeling a subsequent sense of satisfaction that we are meeting their conditioning (I'm just posting for the sake of a conversation mate, not for argument - for me, it's an interesting concept).

IrishMack's picture

I agree as well without argument. Maybe it is deep seeded as a self conscious reward to whoever showed us that was what you do. I beleive you may be right on that. I was raised mostly by my grandparents and the values they instilled in me were priceless. Maybe I'm honoring my grandfather by following his principals and looking for his respect which in turn makes it selfish? Fuck you for making me philosophize it now lol. Here I was thinking I was selfless in my decisions.

Ozninjaguy's picture

I was raised mostly by my grandparents and the values they instilled in me were priceless.

I was raised by my Grandmother and she taught me so much, so I completely understand, and I do often think when i do something, that it was taught to me by her.

Maybe I'm honoring my grandfather by following his principals and looking for his respect which in turn makes it selfish?

Not selfish, just seeking approval or self reward because it's what is expected of you and you are doing it.

Fuck you for making me philosophize it now lol

You're welcome, lol.

DfromPhilly's picture

I dunno if I agree 100%, but that’s a really good point. Even if you keep it to yourself, at the core you may only be doing it because it makes you feel good. Granted, you may be doing it primarily because it’s the right thing to do, but there’s definitely a part of us that’s doing it for ourselves.

I think there are certainly selfless acts though. although they’re more rare. I do believe that some good deeds are genuinely done out of the goodness of someone’s heart. That they don’t think about how it will make them feel but it was the right thing to do.

I just hate when people do something nice just to brag about it. “Hey everyone look what a good person I am.” It just kills the whole thing to me. Or even worse, people that make up stories bragging about something they didn’t even do... but that’s a whole other can of worms

Ozninjaguy's picture

Agreed mate - I'm just waxing philosophical...for the sake of discussion.

DfromPhilly's picture

I dig. I think it’s a good point tho. I’m sure a lot of people do certain good deeds because it makes them feel good about themselves.

Ozninjaguy's picture

I agree to an extent with the selfless acts concept - but we are fundamentally ego-driven animals. For example: there is a stray cat that I occassionally feed. I feel sorry for it even though I have no responsibility for it. Tonight i had no food to give, so i broke an egg and gave it to her. She had never tasted a raw egg, so I put some on her mouth, and on my fingers She ended up eating the whole thing. Now, I was pleased about that because she didn't go hungry tonight. Was that a selfless act? or was it motivated by self-gratification? Or, are the two concepts so intrinsically interwoven that they can't be extricated from one another?

+1 for creativity. It's an interesting idea; though i doubt it will be employed as so many contribute it would be hard to track.

Makwa's picture

There is so much good stuff being posted on this site on a daily basis that I don't think you could ever keep track over the course of a month which was the best. When you see good info, then reward it on spot with that green thumb.

You have to be at least 50 karma for your vote to register buddy.

It more or less already works that way. Contribute (in a positive way) and you’ll get thumbs up.

Karma will not put some weight on me Smile

Thank you brother

My friend, karma is earned with time and desire to learn. With curiosity and the desire to communicate, in a pleasant way but always with respect, helping others.
You earn karma with life experience.

Greg's picture

You all are giving karma to the best contributors already. And, mods at times bump members who have made extraordinary contributions. (as well as bashing them with the hammer as a few of you will see shortly-not a threat to the OP) So, in short, no lottery needed.

That said, how many of you gave karma to Carlos and the judges for doing such a great job with the EBC? Nothing says eroids love like a personal karma pat on the back...
