+ 4 CPAP to increase gains
A CPAP machine (Continuous positive airway pressure) is a machine used by sleep apnea patients. This device blows air over water and through a tube to a mask that is worn on your face. This devise allows people with apnea to have a better nights rest. My thought is if are body repairs while we sleep this machine would help with building muscle. Anyone out there have one of these machines and can tell if you gain better with it? My theory is that if this machine gives you better sleep then you will have a better growth hormone release at night. Also it would force you to increase the O2 intake. Kind of like a super charger on a car. Athletes use hyperbaric chambers to aid in healing. Would this be similar? Would it be bad for a normal person without apnea to use this machine? I know that they hand these machines out like candy after they get their $5000.00 for a sleep study. If you snore you get one. Is this the one thing that turns us all in to the Phil Heath?

AnonDoes wearing the mask make you sleep on your back ?
anabolicsanonymous1Pretty much yeah.
or side
anabolicsanonymous1I been using one for about 3 three months now. I'm 5'9 and usually around 200lbs with low bf. I finally gave in and had my Dr order a sleep study after I watched a video of myself that my wife took when I was sleeping.
It was fucked up bro, watching me gasping for air and stopping breathing. I snored loud as shit too.
Since I been using it I don't snore at all anymore. I get a MUCH better nights sleep. My study said I was barely getting any REM sleep. I felt tired all the time. Technically I'm obese according to my BMI. The sleep study nurse also said I was like the third bodybuilder that had came in there in the last month.
The mask thing....its hard to get used to. But once you do its not bad at all. You just have to stay with it. I stayed at another house the other day without my cpap and it felt like I had barely slept at all.
Its a good thing I'm married because it sure wouldn't be romantic rolling over after and slapping on the ol cpap mask and turning it on with some broad I just met.
As far as gains, idk. I started hgh a lil while before I started using the cpap. So I don't kno if the shape im in us because of that but I look remarkably better all around. I posted some recent pics. But sleep had definitely improved even when I ran tren.
+1 for thinking outside the box
silver389Hmmm my lady wakes me up sometimes saying I stopped breathing. Before reading this I was like ehhh whatever. Now if there's a chance the machine would contribute to gains I might be willing to look into this.
Ace VenturaI snore more the bigger I get. At my lightest weight, I don't really snore at all. My wife threatens to video me sleeping, but I don't really want to see it. It would be interesting though. I believe I just snore, but I should ask her if I gasp for air or stop breathing at all.
Few of the doctors say basically if you snore you have it. The way they adjust the machine is they crank it up until you stop snoring
Ace VenturaMy ol' lady would love this shit. I kinda feel bad, she's actually gotten up in the middle of the night to sleep on the couch a few times recently. My weight used to fluctuate so much because I would take breaks from the gym, bulking diet etc to rest and heal. I don't plan on doing that anymore so hopefully my weight will stay up. I suppose it would be the right thing to do to look into one of these. I'm already used to sleeping on my back from being forced to when I had a herniated disc.
...and why the hell does anabolics anonymous keep getting banned?
My wife loves it. She can sleep now.
Excellent. I am guessing there is a high % of us have apnea and do not know it. I am thinking this slows growth. Only a guess though. I hope it makes me big as hell.
anabolicsanonymous1Most of us are considered over weight. Those types of people are at a much higher risk for this. But bro, when I saw that video of me gasping for air like I was drowning it was enough to sign up for sleep study
my wife says I snore but i do not stop breathing. She says I do not gasp for air either. I am a very lazy person so that is why I am assuming I have it.
anabolicsanonymous1What's your height and weight?
6' 250
AnonI do think your right about people being un aware they have this condition.
for someone who sleeps well i dont see the benefits. the association between the cpap and low 02 is caused from the apnea patients breathing stoping often during sleep. for a healthy normal sleeper, i think the only benefits youre going to receive is a well humidified sleep. the reason it blows over water is simply to keep the air moist as the positive continuous air flow thru the entire night will dry you nasal passages and throat out. i suffer from pretty bad sleep apnea but my insurance wont cover this machine because im right on the thresh hold. i guess a sleep disturbance every 4-6 minutes doesnt warrant one based on my insurance. although ive got a spare one from my mother, its horrible to wear. its uncomfortable and the hissing noise all night drives me crazy. there are new and better ones out now but unfortunately i cant afford one
mine is going to be hard to get used to but pretty quite. Check craigs list for newer model if you want one.
i never thought to check CL im going to do that now. thanks fina
AnonThe thing is I dont believe it would increase oxygen content in the blood stream, perhaps if you hokked the CPAP up to a tank of oxygen
Unless you have significant lung disease or smoke a lot your oxygen saturation is already >95% which cant be enhanced by CPAP. If you're healthy enough to train hard then O2 delivery is not likely a limiting factor in exercise recovery/ muscle growth.
AnonWhere did you get this " >95%" figure from ?
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hypoxemia/MY00219
Anonabout 7 or 8 years ago I had a problem and had to go to the ER , I could be wrong like I said it was a few years back but I could have sworn they said I only had something like 40 % oxygen in my blood. Thats why I wondered about that 95 % number. Perhaps I am wrong about my numbers though.
Edit . OK I just went and looked up oxygen in blood, and apparently anything below 88% and you start to have major problems, so I must be mistaken about my memory of what they told me. I do remember them saying the color of my blood way way off too. I wonder if it could have been lungs functioning only @ 40% ??
Anyway if 88% results in major problems, then that must mean just 1 or 2 percent is going to result in a significant change in body function.
This is oversimplified, but when you go to the hospital with breathing and/or oxygenation issues two initial tests are used. The pulse ox- the thing they put on your finger with the red light measures O2 saturation or Sa02. This measures the 98% of Oxygen that is normally bound to hemoglobin. An arterial blood gas test or Pa02 measures the 1-2% of O2 in the blood that is dissolved. They usually correlate but in some conditions inlcuding carbon monoxide poisoning or alkalosis (high blood pH) the oxygen contents will differ. SaO2 just tells to what degree the Hgb is saturated, while the PaO2 will better assess the effectiveness of oxygen exchange between the lung and the arterial blood. 40% was possibly your PaO2 b/c if your Sats were 40% you wouldnt have been awake for very long.
I highly doubt it'd be of any benefit to anyone that does not have serious sleep disturbances associated with sleep apnea
Add to the fact that if you go and get tested and you are diagnosed to have sleep apnea this is gonna make it harder for you to get good health/life insurance at affordable prices. That sleep apnea diagnoses will follow you around forever. I know people that got diagnosed and they can't even sleep with the cpap machine on because they find it uncomfortable
It is a bitch to sleep with. I am guessing it is going to take some time to get used to. I am able to keep mine on around 5 hours a night. I wake up feeling like super man even though that mask sucks ass.
Hey man that's great that you're getting some benefit from it! Anything that improves quality of life is huge in my opinion
I usually sleep at elast 10 hours a night. With this CPAP I am wide awake in 7. I am hoping I can get used to it and sleep longer.
That's great man. Have you notice being any less fatigued during the day? I'm interested because I'm scheduled to have a sleep study in a week or so. I canceled my last one :-/
I have only been doing it for 3 nights but yes. I feel way better. People that I have talked to that have used one for a while will not sleep without it. Not even a nap.
Good deal man. Thanks for the feedback and I may hit you with a pm in a week or so to see how you're coming along. I've gotten some positive feedback as well as negative so I'm still on the fence about it. I just don't know how in the hell I'd sleep with it since I roll around a lot..
It sucks. The humidifier makes my face hot and I felt like it would kill me at 1st. My only problem with it now is it tickles my nose and bugs the shit out of me. After you get it post on this thread how you feel.
angusThis certainly might help with Tren sleep. Sleep is difficult on Tren so anything that makes it easier has to be beneficial.
one down fall is it makes me sweat a little.
Anonit wouldn't help with building muscle; I think this is just a cheap version of a hyperbaric chamber IMO- which cost $12,000-$30,000 (I wanted to buy one)
If this machine is pumping pure O2 levels, its possible you might be having a slightly elevated recovery, or perhaps a placebo
It is high pressure so it forces more air when you inhale.
AnonYour lungs can only hold a certain pressure, i'm not sure this would actually help you in growing.. theres a reason why hyperbaric chambers cost so much.
I agree I don't think it would have much if any effect on muscle growth. It might help with recovery time but the effect would be so minute it would have no bearing on muscle growth.
This very true hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used for this^^^^^^ but there is no scientific evidence of it increasing muscle. I have used this many times and they do help with recovery, so does a freezing cold ice bath.
I am not positive but I think they can sub a mask for a hyperbaric chamber but that mask is delivering 100% o2
Anonnot something i've looked into, I would think it might improve your sleep - or apnea as you mentioned. But how would a mask act the same as something that costs more than a car? I have no idea tbh, but if its something that is promising or beneficial i'd be the first to buy it. Takes a little bit or everything to get where we wanna be. Sleep being one of them..
Well I started on the idea of building a hyperbaric chamber. Then I found out my kid has sleep apnea. So going through all the bull shit with my kid I have ran into a few people that it has changed their life. They have lost weight and able to think better. I am trying to use one now so I am going to give it a shot. THen I will make a hyperbaric chamber. lol
Anonwell if the body can't complete the REM cycles, the sleep is almost pointless for us - to an extreme where its like we never go to sleep. You know, that feeling like you're up all night, but actually you're sleeping lightly. Thats the only way we "power down." let me know when you build a chamber, ill buy it off you lol - or come sleep in it
I will
RustyhookerThe long distance champs use varied oxygen machines nightly. If i had access....certainly I'd try it. Even the sidelines at football games has portable oxy for recovery.
I bought one of these for $90. Guy has so many of them because he is on medicaid and gets one every year or 2. So he sold me a brand new one.Its hard to sleep in but I feel way better when I wake up than I do without it.
Vewiit makes sense thats for sure.
I know that is why I would like someone that has one of these damn things to get on here and talk about it. If you have insurance they are easy as hell to get for free. Takes a few sleep studies but worth it if it aids in fat loss and growth.
Vewii agree.
Vewiinteresting i'll have to look into this.
