+ 4 BIGOREXIA- Fact or Myth

ad

"bigorexia", "megarexia", or "reverse anorexia", the delusional or exaggerated belief is that one's own body is too small, too skinny, insufficiently muscular, or insufficiently lean, although in most cases, the individual's build is normal or even exceptionally large and muscular already."

This is the only explanation i have for myself. I know people will say because i see myself everyday in the mirror i dont notice but thats not my case. I dont see what others see at all and if i skip a couple days i see my arms and other parts actually smaller. Bigorexia can be taken as "all in the head" but i cant defeat it. Is ita legit enough thing to address with my primary?

I have been bodybuilding and training clients for 25+ years and NO doubt this is a real thing. Ive had bouts with it myself.

I wrote an article on it. It is very real. I knew guys who were 320 lbs and thought they were small.

Bro this whole world the lot of us live in, and the AAS business that runs it. Is depended on guys thinking there not big enough or thinking there body fat % is to high.

It is absolutely 100% real .

My natural frame weight is 168lb, I'm sitting at 205lb . I cant tell the difference , but my girlfriend keeps telling me " your big!" and i'm like I dunno babe , I think I need like 10 more pounds.

Lol. You know how many times aday i ask !!!
Does this shirt make me look big.

Mate absolutely it exists but not just in physical appearance but in pretty much anything you are chasing in life or big goals you have. Its the same thing in strength terms - If I ever got a 220kg bench it would maybe last a few days before I'd see someone 10 years younger than me doing 230kg like John Haack and I'd be feeling like a pussy again & what I'm lifting is not enough Lol It's what puts you at the top of your game and a winner, the only downside is sometimes you don't truly enjoy and revel in the satisfaction you should be enjoying in the moment. Same with Self made millionaires - do any of them feel content when they have made a million and retire? No way - they then want 10 million in the bank Lol

Very True!

I definitely understand where you're coming from on this subject. I'm sure a few can relate, either currently or at one point in life. The one tool that I've picked up over the years that's helped me in all aspects of my life , business , personal, relationships , being a father and also with self image is - positive self talk - and just being more positive in general. When I hear that voice of negativity, I recognize it and immediate change it with positivity. It's truly been a game changer in my life. I really wish I would have known this shit and applied it when I was in my teens and 20s

Definitely fact.

Im believing it now reading from all the experience below. Always thought it was just a small handful of people who thought like me and it was just a made up name for thinking foolish. But its actually legit. I dont feel like im a rare species anymore

Chasing the unachievable is in my opinion a good thing as long as you don’t lose perspective. That permanent carrot dangling just out of reach pushes you harder each day to improve. If I actually got the carrot I think I’d stop working out because I would have “completed” it, but I want to do this until my last day.

Thats exactly how i feel if i miss days, "depressed" because when i feel like im shrunk or smaller my esteem drops. Sometimes ill feel insecure in a tight shirt thinking imma look stupid but i know from how tight it is i must have some size. You seen my pics. Ill still wear baggy shirts cuz i feel ill look skinny in a tight shirt

Bearded_muscle's picture

When you miss days that’s just residual inflammation going down, not actual muscle. Maybe keeping that fact in mind will help next time you feel that way.

Pumped_'s picture

Thats what i have to remember. When that "pump" goes away the bigorexia kicks in.

Yes its very real. But it seems nowadays guys are going for a learner and smaller look.
There isn't much your primary doc can do. If you feel it is that bad a counselor/therapist would be better.

It depends on how severe you think it is. Not thinking you are as big as you are is one thing. But if you look at yourself and think you look 150 lbs with no muscle is different. if you start going to extremes to try and continuously gain muscle and add weight and still not happy.

I remember a long time ago reading stories of Pro BBs that completely came off gear and lost all their size. They would wear layers of clothes to cover up. Some went as far as wearing disguises when going out in public so no one would notice them.

Yup. Pretty much all of us. Ha. I always feel too small and skinny

No matter how many people tell you or how many times. You like the compliment but its just like only being told your haircut looks nice.

Pumped_'s picture

Thank you. Any experience or know someone that had/has it?

Dudeman24's picture

Oh I defiantly feel like I have it lol not as bad as a few years ago but it consumed me at one point lol

Its real.
I had bigorexia.
My dr even put it down as that.
When i was 25ish id be on 2.5g of oils plus multiple orals big and thick as fuck at about 120kgs and 15percent bf and i saw a skinny wimp in the mirror.
Was never enough and never happy with it.
I look at photos now from back then and wish i was that big now which im no where near.
Besides injuries and other issues i ended up taking time off because it actually started destroying me and becoming a stress etc.
Bigorexia is real.
Id say more people than less have it on this very site.
Thats y you see all these dudes abusing.

Pumped_'s picture

Forgot to add. So you are saying you longer suffer symptoms and how fid you overcome?

Pumped_'s picture

So it is recognisable in the medical field. Didnt want it get passed over as some psuedo scientific diagnosis. But i still haven't told my primary im on AAS. Thats a whole other subject. Some Doctors are cool and some will ruin your insurance. Cant wait to hear more input. THANKS FLASH!
