+ 5 Beware - Rhabdomyolysis
Most of you have probably never heard of Rhabdomyolysis, (RM) for short. If you spend anytime in the gym or are an athlete of any sort you should at least be aware of it, because you can die from it. RM is the rapid breakdown of muscle tissue. The byproducts of this muscle breakdown (myoglobin is the main one) are released into the bloodstream and are very harmful to your kidneys. They essential plug up your kidneys and can cause renal failure. Guess what we are doing day in and day out in the gym....yep, breaking down muscle tissue. For the most part, all we ever experience from our gym sessions is some DOMS, no big deal and we aren't going to end up with renal failure from it. Now lets take someone who is for the most part a newb in the gym and run him through one of our squat till you puke routines. You can see the potential for some severe muscle trauma to occur and RM could very likely occur.
RM can also occur in highly trained athletes. Take my case for example. I competed in a bodybuilding competition about a month or so ago. I competed in 3 different classes and all of those ran pretty much back to back. So I exited stage left and right away entered stage right several times in a row. Now lets basically do that all over again for the night show. That is a ton of isometrics. Every single muscle in your body is being flexed as hard as you possible can for the entire time you are on stage. There is no such thing as a "relaxed pose". You want to have the toughest workout of your life. Hit a pose and hold it as hard as you can for several minutes. Long story short all of that posing caused some severe muscle trauma that my body couldn't recouperate from.
Here is how it all went down. After the show was done for that night I was just cramping up a bit and felt a little sore. Nothing out of the ordinary after doing a show. The next morning I could barely walk to my car from the hotel because my legs were cramping so bad and they just locked up on me. I had to sit down on my cooler I was pulling halfway in the parking because I couldn't move from the cramps and pain in my quads. Finally made it home and for the next few days all I could do was just lay immobilized on the couch because if I tried moving my legs would start spasming and the pain was unbearable. I finally realized this was more than some good old fashioned DOMS and ending up being carted away in an ambulance to the emergency room because the pain was so bad (I ended up passing out in the ambulance because the pain was to intense, the dulatid didn't kick in quick enough). I told the doc what was going on and he knew right away what the deal was. He informed me I would be spending the next few days in the hospital hooked up to an IV. My myoglobin levels at this point were 179,000 (high normal is 1,000) so he was real concerned about my kidneys. My other reading (CK or something like that) was 185,000 (I think normal was supposed to be around 100). I definitely had some severe muscle trauma from all my posing.
The pain was so intense from this that I had to be put on 10mg of dulatid for pain control and 10mg of valium to control the spasms in my legs (think of being electrocuted and having your legs beaten with a baseball bat, that is how bad my quads would feel when they started spasming.) I was on the pain and muscle relaxants for about 3 weeks until the pain became tolerable. I don't remember much that whole time but apparently I ended up back in the ER a couple of days after they discharged me, but I can't remember why. My legs were also so weak that I was not able to walk without the aid of a walker. After about a month of rehab I was able to walk somewhat normally without worrying about my legs giving out. What also really sucked was I ended up with TMJ from clenching my jaw because of the pain and was put on some prednisone for that. After 5 months of prepping you want to eat afterwards but the TMJ made that difficult since I couldn't open my mouth or chew.
The scary part about this was the doc said my muscles would keep eating themselves up if we couldn't get it under control right away. All I could think about was my bodybuilding career was going to be over with because I would end up with chicken legs if my muscles in my legs kept getting eaten up by this.
Enough of my horror story, here is some more info if you are interested.

This just happened to me a week ago from hiking/camping and hauling heavy equipment in the extreme heat and dehydration. It was pure hell with the full body cramping and leg spasms and the docs would not give me anything for the pain. I got a measly .25mg xanax every 8 hours. I never want to go through that again.....it was pure hell. The pain in my lower back from my kidneys has made it very hard to sleep. Tylenol isn't helping and every doctor looks at you like a junkie now if you ask for a pain med. Every day is a little better. I would kill for 8 hours of sleep but 3 has been the norm.
Makwa after reading this, I think you need to take a little vacation somewhere... Enjoy the beautiful weather, the fresh air, the tropical women.
Shit bro,
I kind of know the pain you were dealing with ,i got stuck in a parking lot myself .
I did a smashing leg work out ,then next morning i poured cobcrete all day ..on the way home my right quad and calf starting cramping and spasm so i pulled over ,got out of truck anf the left ,did the same thing .it felt like someone had pliars and was pinching the muscles (big pliars ,the only way i could describe it ).the pain was unbearabke i had my phone in hand ready for 911....all i could do was stand stiff legged like flexing ,and anytime id release the tension and relax muscle the pain and spasms would come .
I hobbled that lot for hours. , i was scared to call ambulance because then id have to sit and i was scared shitless ..im sure mine was not any rate as bad as yours. .but i 100% know the pain you went through ..mine did subside ,but i still get from time to time .i believe mine was caused by dehydration and lack of electrolytes...but good to see you up and around. ...
The pain is definitely unreal. I would rather have my fingers smashed in a car door.
Damn, that sounds unreal. Glad you are on the mend bro.
My word mate. I have heard of it and read about it but never a real live account of it from someone "I know"! Thank God you are ok and are recovering. Thank lei for sharing your story with us.
Wow bro. I've made "jokes" with my trainer that this was gonna happen if he didn't let up on the weights.
Now that seems in really bad taste.
God bless you bro. You're just starting out your bodybuilding career. I wish you all the success in the world. I mean that.
I have done some crazy-ass brutal workouts back in my days and never had any issues. Who would of thought that just doing some posing would throw me for a loop. I am thinking dehydration may have played a part in this. I don't use any diuretics, just restrict water and vit C. Next time I'll try and rehydrate a little bit after judging is done to hopefully help prevent this from happening again.
Gatorade and powerade. Along with water. A bit unrelated to the topic but goes hand and hand. Guys running hard core diuretics along with clen and t3 into a show this ups the risks 10 fold. I could look up well over 100 competitors of all classes who have died in the past 2 years that you dont hear of. Many related to things like this, diuretics, slin, and dnp etc etc. Many have got lucky but death is always right around the corner when we are walking experiments willing to do whatever to win the plastic trophy and 10 secondsent of fame. Glad your ok makwa.
I'll definitely be more aware and prepared for it next go around if it does happen, which hopefully it won't. Being stubborn and lying in agony for 3 days before going to the ER didn't help matters.
I imagine. Probably will seek medical attention sooner if something happens again bro...
AnonThanks for sharing and I wish you a speedy and safe recovery man.
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkI believe this has also been referred to as "crossfitter disease" I'm another article I read. This actually happened to a friend of mine who was doing 100 days of squats, on top of his regular daily workouts. Doctors told him he was on his way to kidney failure when he got to the hospital. We have to take care of ourselves, that's for sure. Sorry you had to go through this Makwa. Hope your recovery continues to go well.
This is worse than I thought. I never imagined I would have something in common with crossfitters.
lmao!
Damn bro, I'm sorry to hear about that...hope things are goin your way finally?... This mite not mean much, coming from some guy you've never met, but I sincerely wish you well and a speedy recovery! Hell I have stalked your profile page and forums enough, that you are on my Xmas card list...haha.
Hang tough bro and looking forward to a positive update soon!
That's a hell of an experience Makwa. You're lucky to be alive with lab numbers like that. I've seen people younger than you die with less in the ER. Rhabdo and few other similar conditions. Consider yourself blessed. I hope for a speedy and smooth recovery for you. One day at a time. Listen to your docs. And thanks for sharing that.
Thanks.
All seems to be going good now. Been back in the gym for the last couple of weeks getting my conditioning back. Have some more bloodwork in a couple of weeks to check up on things and then I should be ready to go full tilt again.
