+ 5 THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP!
I have written about sleep many times in the articles posted here. However, it is a vast subject so I'm dedicating a series of articles on it. This is the first. I figured if I put it all into one it would be too long and tedious to read.
There will be links to the various posts so that you can go back and forth.
Most people in our society are aware of the importance of sleep. However, very few people including bodybuilders actually get enough sleep, or high quality sleep.
Although bodybuilders are cognizant of the fact that sleep is important, they underestimate exactly how crucial it is, and fail to understand why.
REMEMBER: When you go to the gym you tear micro fibers in the muscles. DURING SLEEP THESY KNIT AND HEAL CAUSING MUSCLE GROWTH!
Many important physiological events occur when we sleep. This is the time when our bodies recover, heal themselves, and prepare for the work that lies ahead. Failure to get adequate rest can range from a minor problem to a severe health risk.
All good things happen when we sleep; all bad things when we don't! I have the research to prove it!
As we study sleep and its importance, we will see that it affects our health, productivity, but our vitality and mood. A person who is not gotten a proper nights rest is not only under physical stress, there are likely to make mistakes at work, produce less, and be difficult to get along with. Not to mention being unable to do maximum workouts in the gym!
Of course the gains or lack thereof in the gym are directly proportional to the amount of sleep we get and it has to be quality sleep. We'll be discussing “Quality sleep” in another post!
When we are tired, easy tasks become difficult, and difficult once become impossible. Most people do work while tired, or in a state of fatigue, and are in a quandary as to how to resolve this problem.
As we look at sleep, we will attempt to understand its importance in greater depth, and study remedies and methods to improve both the quality of our sleep, and its duration.
Since there are only so many hours in the day, we must learn to get enough sleep within the time frame we have. Since we cannot create extra hours, we need to be able to fall asleep quickly, and sleep deeply. We must also commit enough of those hours to sleep.
Many people including bodybuilders simply do not sleep enough, because they don't think they have time. However, the bottom line is they will produce more in less time if they sleep.
One thing is for sure; most people need to review how much sleep they get, and the quality of that sleep. Many of you'll be surprised to find out that you simply do not get enough good sleep. Making a few changes can dramatically impact this for many. For others the problem is more complex, and will require more study and more work.
However, like anything else, creating good sleep habits is possible for anyone. The rewards are great, so it is something that is very worthwhile.
In the forthcoming articles, the reference to recovery and sleep is frequent. Its importance is discussed in numerous places, as it is essential to succeeding in obtaining maximum physical condition.
So, read the articles regarding this very important subject. Make every attempt to pick the best resolutions for you the results will show on your physique!

Good post - sleep is important, but also the timing of sleeping is important. Going to bed at 2 am and waking at 10 am means 8 hours sleep, but it is out of sync with your natural circadian rhythm, so you do not gain the most physically and psychologically that a normal pattern of sleep will produce - even though you have had the requisite 8 hours.
AnonI thought the big fortune 500/300 companies got together and decided that all you need is 6 hours of sleep now? Now get your ass back to work.......... until you're 75.
True. I think that's what they would like. Thankfully the Aussie government has dropped the proposed 70 years of age retirement age. Doesn't really affect me, I retired to Asia at 57 and have been here so long that I don't qualify for a gov pension (even after working for 40 years). No way was I going to die on the job.
Due to my medical conditions, I was barely getting 4 hours of sleep a night for years. I was prescribed stuff that just knocked me out. I had no dreams, hence no REM sleep. I was a zombie. I got new doctors, and I was put on Valdoxan. I now get 6 - 8 hours a night, and I dream. Sleep heals the body, and REM sleep heals the mind. Getting enough sleep is just as important as eating the right foods. Thanks for the reminder. +1
Have you tried Melatonin? It is a synthesized version of what your body releases to induce sleep. No hazy, hangover feeling the next day that often pharmaceuticals can give. 5mg half hour before bed and you will sleep like a baby.
I use it when I travel to reset my circadian clock, so I can get over jet lag faster.
I use it plus GABA. Good stuff, but it was not enough alone.
I can attest to it working. For myself I take it an hour before bed. It will not "knock you out" Its more of a natural inducer. Also as you stated it does not have a residual feeling in the morning. For me it has helped with quality sleep.
Last year I was working day and night ,was sleeping for a total 5 hours between, and thats after hitting the gym. The gains I made were minimal. After I quit my night job and slept good I started seeing physical and strength results right away .
