+ 5 Milk thistle underrated—liver health
ad
5-6 weeks back I found my ALT slightly out of range, so I decided to take action. Went to Walmart and picked up some cheap milk thistle (175mg/cap). I took 3 caps with breakfast, and 5-6 weeks later, my ALT has fallen by over 25%, and back within range.
15-20 years ago we used milk thistle while on (especially orals) to keep the liver healthy. For the price, I’d encourage anyone ‘on’ (oils or orals) to throw it in the mix. Perhaps not as fancy/effective as tudca or liv52 but it definitely works!

Milk thistle can do great things if your liver enzymes are elevated it’s one of the few supplements that stay in my regiment year round. One of my friends had hepatitis c and brought his enzymes to normal from almost liver failure in 6 months with a lifestyle change and milk thistle. I believe he was dosing 3000 mg seed extract daily.
Milk Thistle is an awesome supplement. Far worth its weight in gold imo
Ive always sworn by milk thistle.
I dont really know why its marketed as a liver supplement though but it definatly does work.
It is a powerful antioxidant so its good for all over health not just the liver.
It definatly helps boost appetite aswell.
I reccommend it as a daily staple.
I take the high strength 35,000 mg capsules 3 a day when not on, split morning afternoon and night, double that when on.
Never had any liver problems even on anadrol/ dbol etc etc.
Under rated supp.
Alphamale500Are the 35,000 mg Milk Thistle capsules you take made with ground whole plant material and not the extract form? And is it just milk thistle by itself? I'm only asking because that would be an extremely high dose for an extract formula and I never even seen an extract dose like that!
RustyhookerMy bloods showed drop in ALT just restarting milk thistle. I ran out...bought more...bloods showed its good stuff.
What dosage do you stick to when on and off cycle Rusty??
RustyhookerWas just taking 140mg caps. 1 am and 1 pm. Hydration imo is key as well for all we do on cleaning out our system.
Would you do it all year round? Thanks
Nice!
Alphamale500Milk Thistle is certainly a very good supp for liver health. Those who are new to using it, besides seed and plant parts, should also always remember to use the extract form and not just whole plant parts. It may seem obvious to us that have been using supps for years, but maybe not for someone just starting to use them. NAC goes well with milk thistle, as does Curcumin.
Milk Thistle is and always has been very effective. It should be extracted to 80% Silymarins
Nice work, well done.
It's all about the silymarin content
I had same after some liver values raised last year, used MT and off we went happy days. same as you back in the day, it was all we had/knew about. +'s
Dominick77Make sure your milk thistle is SEED extract as opposed to plant. Plant extracts convert to estrogen as to where the seed extracts don't. I personally prefer liv52/NAC, but I would use Milk Thistle if it was the only thing available over nothing of course.
Are they required to list from plant extract or seed? Will it be clear on the label? I have never paid much attention to this.
Dominick77It should specify it in parentheses is what I have commonly seen here in the states. Whether or not they are required, I am not certain, but I have seen brands that do not specify and I stay away from those. Or it will state "propietary blend" those are no gos for me as well.
Interesting!
Dominick77"Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: Extracts from milk thistle PLANT might act like estrogen. If you have any condition that might be made worse by exposure to estrogen, don’t use these extracts. In contrast, the more commonly used milk thistle SEED extracts do not seem to act like estrogen."
