+ 4 How Many Protein Shakes Do you have per day?

ad

Since the amount of protein we can digest in one sitting debate has reared its head again, I thought it would be interesting to see how many shakes everyone has on a typical day. This is assuming 40 grams per shake, so if you consume 80 grams of shakes over the day then vote for 2, or if you do not use them and prefer food only then click Zero.

I get all my protein through food. I follow a moderate protein moderate carb diet year round. I do drink aminos as soon as I wake up and before during and after my workouts. I just think protein powders are crap and I don’t trust supplement companies. No matter who they are.

robb's picture

I have a protein shake as soon as I get up then post workout. If I'm not training I usually eat extra carbs on off days.
I would definitely say my physique is better looking, fuller muscle bellies from the extra protein from shakes.

Optimum nutrition is my favourite brand, tried a few other so called leading brands but ON is the one for me.

Same time for me. Same brand. I get the unflavored one or vanilla. The. I put a bunch of stuff in it. It’s hard to eat when I first wake up so drinking it is easy.

robb's picture

Yeah same reason, so much easier to drink something rather than eating.
As a kid I could eat monster size breakfasts but this disire went years ago. I make up for it later in the day.

For sure buddy, the appetite definitely gets stronger as the day progresses and as you are up for longer the amount of food you can take in during a sitting increases too I find. If you go back to bed again you find when you rise again then your ability to take in food quantity goes back to square 1. Its also to do with being vertical and not laid horizontal that the digestive tract is operating at its quickest and most efficient. Liver bile juices are flowing fastest.

press1's picture

I love Vanilla flavoured shakes and Ice Creams also, other favourite is Banana Lol Banana seems to have gone out of fashion these days though Sad

Bill1976's picture

You can change the floor of vanilla to almost anything you want if you have fruit

press1's picture

I hear ya buddy - you can add things like Banana, Strawberry's, Peach virtually anything to it.

I voted zero. I do sometimes drink protein shakes if I am on the go and don't have time for an actual meal; never on a consistent basis.

I drink 3 on lifting days and 2 on off days. On lifting days I make a pre-workout shake with 1 scoop of gainer (4 scoop serving size), 1 scoop whey, 8 oz 2% milk and 8 oz unsweetened almond milk. I don’t have a huge appetite and it’s the easiest way for me to get the carbs & other nutrients in. Then of course a PWO skate and a casein shake before bed,

Non-lifting days are a Joko Molk time released shake + cliff bar for breakfast after fasted cardio and casein before bed.

MikeHawkJuices's picture

Wow that's quite a bit...curious, what is your calorie load and macros? Also are you running any cycles? Seems like that amount of supplemental protein would only be necessary if you are constantly in protein synthesis, like when using gear. I was told by a nutritionist once that 2 protein shakes (2 scoops each/50g protein) a day was too much lol so would love to hear what you think?

Eagles 2013's picture

A lot of it also boils down to what type of protein you are supplementing. 100 g of whey protein a day would be a waste, absolutely. We digest so quickly that other than immediately post out your body is not going to process at all.

Drinking slow release or time release, blended supplemental protein is a little different. Proteins such as plant-based and we take much longer to digest and break down so your body has time to absorb the nutrients overtime. The protein you see in my macro breakdown below was either Whole Foods or time released.

Eagles 2013's picture

The biggest reason for the supplemental protein pre-workout is that I have been using Semaglutide for the last 8 months which nukes my appetite and greatly slows stomach emptying and delays digestion and nutrient absorption. Drinking those pre-workout calories allows me to get them in and do it in a way that they can be absorbed in a meaningful way prior to exercise. I used a blood glucose meter to confirm that my glucose levels were not peaking for almost twice as long after starting Semaglutide, so I started drinking the pre-workout shake 90 mins pre-workout instead of 45.

Aside from that I’m on TRT and added Mast about 4 weeks ago as I work to lean out going into Summer. I put a screenshot of my Macros and nutrition intake yesterday straight from My Fitness Pal. I log everything pretty meticulously there. Do note that yesterday was not a lifting day or there would’ve been an ~300-350 kcal from carbs & protein in there.

Sounds nice mate Good

Eagles 2013's picture

I would like more of it to come from whole food but at the end of the day you gotta do what you gotta do to make it work. Plus, I don’t earn a paycheck from the gym, so I have to make the gym/diet work with what does earn me a paycheck!

press1's picture

Nice Macros Tracker there buddy!! I don't think I ever manage to eat 200g protein per day lol

wanted's picture

Im shocked press. Lifting all that weight i think you would utilize it nicely. Im at 243 grams myself and wont go to bed until i hit that number

press1's picture

My appetite is pitiful mate, all my girlfriends have always ate more than me LMAO I tend to make up for it with shakes and drinks with dextrose powder in throughout the day. I've tried multiple ways to try and eat double what I do including MK 677 and GHRP6 - they seem to help a little at first and then I quickly seem to acclimatise to them and notice no difference.

wanted's picture

Sounds like me when taking orals. Thats why im thinking of takibg the hgh to 6-8 iu for first time ever. Instead of running Orals.

press1's picture

Orals are great at first, you can get a real buzz off them in training and some quick gains if they are good quality, but the problem is they are just not sustainable in the long term. Munching tablets everyday quickly becomes tiresome and you can feel them destroying your stomach, I can get a sore throat from them too and cough. Its hell waking up during the night and having a coughing fit because the acid reflux they cause has risen up in your throat and dried/burnt it out!! Lol Anything oil or liquid based I think will always get you better results in the long run.

Eagles 2013's picture

It’s the $6USD version of the MyFitnessPal app. I had no clue how bad my macros were lacking nor how bad I was killing myself snacking on bullshit until I started meticulously tracking everything & its still tough!

press1's picture

I bet its very surprising at first to see all that you are eating and all that you are not!!! Don't you often feel pressured to keep it up with it through the day and can it turn eating into more of a chore than a pleasurable experience?

Eagles 2013's picture

It does add some pressure, but it’s good pressure. I don’t snack on empty bullshit calories in between meals since I started using it because it pissed me off to log things that I know I shouldn’t eat. It adds a whole new level of personal accountability that I need and enjoy. My problem has always been eating too much instead of not enough, so eating never feels like a chore haha.

It’s really convenient to log because I eat a lot of the same meals so I save them and edit the amount and time when I log them. It also has a really nice barcode scanner for things like protein, shakes, protein bars, and other supplements and restaurant food

ONESICK's picture

With my schedule, I have little time for real food outside of breakfast maybe lunch and dinner. Shakes are simple I can slam it down in seconds. Other than having to go to the bathroom a little extra lol. They digest faster than say a steak. Shakes make it a lot easier getting the protein in. I have no issues with drinking 5 shakes a day when I'm training.

press1's picture

Exactly buddy, I cannot think of a faster and easier way to consume 40g of protein. In actual chicken breast etc it is quite a lot to consume - I don't think a lot of people realise visually just how much it is compared to a measly little shake that is often very enjoyable after a training session. They both have their places and why not use whatever you can to try and hit your goals/targets Smile

Shakes bloat me. I prefer real food

Try bone broth protein powder

I’ll give it a shot. Thanks

Which brands have you tried bud?

JakeKO's picture

I’ve tried several brands, Muscle Milk being my most currently used for about four years. In October, I decided to run a cut cycle so I cut out my protein shakes. Cycle went well, but I credited the leaning out to the cycle. On January 15th, I started a serious clean bulk cycle and decided to leave out the shakes, and eat yogurt instead. Well, even on Dbol for four weeks, I was bloat free. I’m up about seven pounds but none of it is bloat and my waist fat has gone down, go figure. Soooo, I’m blaming the fking protein shakes. I rather eat food. Only inconvenience is bringing a lunch bag with me to work every day. My wife packs it for me every day, so I shouldn’t be complaining

Beach13's picture

Im usually 2 a day , first one is 1 cup oats soaked overnight in almond milk , 8 oz liquid egg whites or 4 whole eggs, 1 scoop healthy n fit protein anabolic muscle or isopure , water

press1's picture

I need 2 meals in me before I start hitting shakes, if I have one after breakfast it never sits that well in me.

Beach13's picture

That's why on that first one I usually use the liquid egg whites or whole eggs and oats just so it's more food based. Otherwise it's my second meal and usually after I work out

Beach13's picture

I just want the original HOT STUFF to come back out

I prefer real food. Ill use protein right after workout. 20-30 grams and then a small meal not long after that. And then at night before bed. Usually I have em when I'm too lazy to cook/don't have anything prepared or don't have the time.
If I'm bulking, I buy weight gainer. Trying to get cut, I'll get some isolate or something with low calories.

My favorite are gold standard, isopure, or redcon MRE. Sometimes I'll use the organic shit. I don't know if it's healthier or not but it seems like it's healthier.

I remember buying this shit called Russian Bear. It's like 1 or two servings in the whole 2lbs container, mix it with a gallon of milk and drink it throughout the day for an extra 5000 calories lol.

First one I remember taking was "weight gainer 2000" or 5000 or something. I was 12 and was getting made fun of for my chicken legs at school.

I just have the 1 per day- Anything more then my stomach gets messed up ! Tried many brands and same thing for me on all of them so 1 a day it is

Catalyst's picture
  1. Whey post workout, then casein before bed. I’m not a big supplement user, prefer real food unless it’s impossible due to work / travelling etc.
press1's picture

Which brand do you happen to use mate?

Catalyst's picture

Myprotein.

press1's picture

Which Whey bud? I mainly use their Dextrose powder, Glutamine, NAC, Creatine. Use to get the Peptopro too until they sold out.

Catalyst's picture

Isolate. Also buy casein from there which is slightly less unpleasant than most brands. I don’t bother with flavours, I just buy the unflavoured varieties.

TheIcon's picture

Ill give an unpopular opinion here but I don't get into the whole Isolate vs. concentrate etc. If I gave someone Isolate protein for a month and concentrate protein for a month Im willing to bet there would have zero idea which one they were taking. Some may say oh it makes me feel bloated. Perhaps But as far as performance its like guessing Coors LIght or Miller Light.

I stick with my normal Protein I have used for 20+ years. I don't get teh "bloat" people talk about and honestly I swear "bloat" never was a thing until these "designer" proteins started coming out.

Its mostly a gimmick. Perhaps gimmick isn't the correct word but marketing. People spending $$ more on isolate aren't really getting any huge benefit over concentrate.

press1's picture

Its all to do with whether you are lactose intolerant or not mate, before these very low/zero fat shakes came out I couldn't tolerate protein shakes - and if I forced myself to have one in the 2000's then afterwards I often found myself feelig sick and uncomfortable, I never knew why this was but just figured shakes weren't for me. Then when I got back into lifting when I was 34 I tried this stuff called Reflex and found I was pretty much fine on it, then purely out of luck tried Isolate 97 and for me it was like drinking water, found that I felt really good on it and even felt hungry very quickly after. I finally twigged it was because I was actually lactose intolerant. After a few years I figured maybe I wasn't anymore and had become immune to lactose problems - so bought a pack of Whey concentrate as the flavours were always better. Well after about 5 gulps I soon realised I was no better and got all the nausea that you get if you suffer from it. I wish I could drink concentrate and blends etc as it is so much cheaper than Isolate and Hydrolysate believe me. Although now there is the Clear Wheys these days with them being like fruit juices they are very enjoyable to consume.

steroidmen's picture

I always use concentrate because when i tried isolate or hydrolisate i don't saw the difference
